Question on track styles

I was having a conversation with a fellow hunter today and we were talking about dogs that ran track with their head up and cut/slash tracks as they went through the woods.

For example, as the coon explores the woods, this dog would not follow the exact path the coon followed, but ran with its head up and catch bits and pieces of it till it got from turn loose to the tree.

What examples of other peoples dogs have you seen that had this trait? Were dogs like this more or less accurate? Is this something a smart dog will learn how to do with experience?

I've never been able to see mine runnin a trac so I don't know how they do it

I have had several that would run a track with their heads up and would cut the track. I know because I saw it in the snow numerous times. These dogs usually ran to catch and had good track speed. Many times they would run ten feet or more off of the track. I also had others that took pretty much the same route as the coon. Some of those were fast too. I remember I had one that seemed to take every step the coon did. He didn't stay here very long.

Some dogs are happy to just run/walk a track out and often times you will hear there owners say their dog cold trailed for a mile then treed with the meat.There isn't much ergency to catch the game in this kind of a dog.On a Garmin the average hunt speed of this kind of dog will be 1-3 mph.If you like to hear a good old coon chase down along the river, you might want exactly this type of hound .On the other hand there are the types that cut and slash a track.These dogs are usually gagging at the end of their leash to get turned loose ,when cut ,they tear off away from you and usually get struck and are tearing down the woods to find the coon.The good dog of this type, usually shuts up some ,gets a line on the track then opens here and there as it cut / crosses the track as it drives the track .These dogs usually end the track in minutes and within 200-300yards.they also get blamed for being hot nosed when in fact they are just faster track dogs,that run to catch.The average hunt speed on these types of dogs is 6-9 mph with some dogs hitting the double digits. It's all in what you like ,good is a matter of opinion .I myself like the cutter type dogs.Chris in my opinion dogs are born both ways and the trait can be bred for.We identified these types of dogs years ago and are getting alot more consistant in producing them .Here in the mountians it might be alittle easier to see this type of dog at work.

ONE THE BEST WAYS TO LEARN A DOG TO PULL THERE HEAD UP AND RUN A TRACK IS LET THEM RUN FAST GAME WHEN THEY ARE A PUP,RABBITS,DEAR,AND BOBCAT WILL ALL GET THEM TO FAST TRACK BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO BREAK THEM.

I love it when a hound runs track with their head up- they are much faster track dogs. I think it is more about winding ABILITY than style. Most hounds aren't great at winding coon, but when you get one that runs heads up... you got a winner. I have had a couple real good winding dogs- layup machines.. I have a young male that is starting wind too

I had a walker pup

A few years back that on a release coon would just burn my redbones on it. You could watch them run that track and although it was pretty hot you could get the idea.

The walker ran with her head up and the reds ran with noses down. She was so far out in front of them it wasn't even funny.

I guess that is what I am kind of talking about.

It's a trait we look for and breed for as well. Track drifters. Our Two Worlds Collide dog is/was the fastest dog of any breed Aubrey's ever hunted with. All the dogs would strike in about the same area, and he'd just walk away with the track. On a cold track he would lower his head, and as it heated up, he'd raise his head and run head up. He used the wind constantly and would drift the tracks. Saw him many times drifting a track running down the edge of the corn, and pop in and grab the coon. It's brains and ability....they're born with it. We do not believe it can be taught. He has some pups/grandpups that do it as well, and some that don't. We've lined bred on pups that do because we love the trait. Dogs that drift well, also have the abilty to lay-up coon well.

I'm lucky in the fact that I hunt cats all winter in the snow so I can see tracks and it's amazing how far off a track a good dog will run and the corners they cut to gain ground. I prefer that type of dog over a track straddler. They are usually fast track dogs that run to catch. I don't know how much it effects accuracy on the tree but mine are very accurate tree dogs.
