Airedales

Anybody out there hunting a full Airedale on squirrel or coon. I have one out of hunting bloodlines that is beginning to tree squirrels well in the yard. She's making me look forward to the season.

I have tried for many years to find a Airedale that would work as a tree dog to no avail. Don't get me wrong they will hunt, but just not like a cur, feist or hound. They don't like to tree very long if they can't see there game and don't like real long tracks. The red line is probably your best hope if you want something to play with and like the breed. But if you want to go out and consistantly catch game, stick with what you know. Good luck.

There are a few Airedales that I have heard of that have made tree dogs and good ones. Rick Underwood in NC has one that is a squirrel and coon dog according to his posts and pictures on the traditional Airedale message board. I also understand that tree dogs are not common in the modern Airedale and that treeing is probably their weakest trait as a hunting dog goes. Here is my dilemma. I think we all know that some of the best squirrel dogs of the past have been dogs of mixed ancestry or dogs that weren't necessarily out of hunting lines. Everything from German Shepards to labs to bull dogs have made good squirrel dogs. Again, I know it is not common but it has happened in almost every breed. Some of that being those dogs were farm dogs and allowed to run loose and many trained themselves. Most squirrel dogs that I've had have started treeing yard squirrels by sight just like this young Airedale and then go on after much hunting and woods time to make squirrel dogs. The bottom line is that it takes hunting and a lot of it to make a dog. I guess I'm saying all of this to get to this particular point. I don't want to not give her a chance because she's an Airedale and she's not supposed to be able to do it. I really like this young dog. Her personality suits me. She doesn't have a shy bone in her body and trys to please you. I am going to give her a good chance to make a squirrel dog which means she will be hunted as hard as I am able. I'll keep you posted on the board on how it goes.

I hope that she does work out for you. I am a member on the pro board and have spoke personally to members. Keep in mind when people who haven't owned a "real" squirrel or coon dog don't really have anything to compare their dog with. So there perception may be skewd as to how well the dog is hunting. I have owned Airedale for over 15 years and would love nothing more than to have a line that could hunt like a feist or cur, so good luck.

I have done a lot of research on those including talking with breeders and I have yet to find one that would hunt and tree like a cur/feist or hound.

im not comparing them to curs/hound im comparing them to airdales if I had to pic from an airdale and a dratharr I would get a dratharr

If you want an all around dog then if you find an Airedale that will tree by all means. Drathars are solid and the testing to become VDD breedable is hard to beat. As far as wanting a versatile tree dog that will flush birds, hunt hogs, retrieve ducks a Laika is pretty tough. Nothing wrong with any other breed I want versatility but I also want a tree dog and they are tree dogs but not like a hound, cur, or feist they stand back from the tree and watch the game but meat dogs they are.
