How to tell a dog sugar is low or something>>>>>>

I have a 3 yr old male dog who has been every once and a while doing this. He may be laying down crawling, drooling, not standing up. One older man told me get the dog some sugar. We did and the dog was fine in 20 sec.



Same happened other day, this time i ran to house found a honey bun and stuffed it in dogs mouth. Dog finally swallowed it.

What does my dog have?

What can I do for him?

Should he get better or worse?


I have no money to spend at Vet on dog. Have contemplated putting him down.

Any advice will be GREATLY appreciated.

You can check their blood sugar with a human blood sugar meter. Best think to do is pour a T spoon or so of sugar under their tongue to raise thier blood sugar level. If you cant take it to the vet to find out whats wrong with it you might as well put it down or give it to somebody who can take care of it..

Had a guy offer to spot me some money to get it checked out. Thanks for advice and may end up checking sugar , will see what they say.

My dad has a bird dog we use to flush turkeys, she gets what is called excercise induced low blood sugar. The only time it happens is after she has run fairly constant hunting after a couple hours. She starts trembling, unsteady on her feet, can't walk a straight line, twitching, etc. I have honey ready if she needs some, have given her cookies once when she needed it, it brought her right out of it. I stop hunting her after she has an episode, and it doesn't happen every time. The dog can always tell when it is about to happen, she starts yowling to let me know...take your dog to the vet if you can. Hard to diagnose because it is only extreme excercise induced in my dads dog. I don't know if this helps. Good luck.

Sounds 2 me like your dog maybe having seizures ( not sure about spell in) ! There not a whole u can do if they have enough of em the vet will put them on meds but if they don't have them often they won't! But giving them sumthng sweet is pose 2 help not sure if it has sumthng 2 do wit there sugar or what! If it is having seizures its not good 2 keep them on a chain they can choke there self!

If blood sugar gets too low it will cause seizures. See it a lot in toy breeds, different than a dog being epileptic or having seizures because of a brain tumor.

When the dog is having an episode like your describing, you can put some marshmellow cream on it's tongue and they will swallow it or it will be absorbed quickly and they will come right out of it. Other people have had threads on here before about this subject and it has been suggested to give them caro syrup before you hunt them. Go to search forums tab and type in Seizures, I'm sure you will find some threads on this same subject. Good luck with your hound.

most likely the dog is diabetic....a simple solution is the kyro or even m&ms work......

ive only seen a cpl who have it over the years.....coon hounds anyway (lots of bird dogs have it btw)

Man am I thankful for this forum. Yall's advise will save my dog. Thanks
