teaching to load?

how do i go about this. the dog is seven months old and i have to pick him up to put in the box in the back of the truck and he is scared to jump from the tail gate to the ground. my truck is a ranger so its not that high. any help would be Appreciated

Just give him time he is still a pup. He will learn

i get them by the collar and jump them in wether they want to or not. a trip or two to the woods and they start doing it on their own.

(make sure your not shinning your light in their eyes so they can see where their jumping to.)

My buddys male bluetick is 4 years old and about 100 pounds and he still picks him up sometimes and loads him cause he wont or cant jump. LOL LOL

well most dog do it with age when they get to where the cant wait to go hunting teyll learn to jumpin the truck but another way is i get a hot dog andput the dog up on the tail gate then leave him ther and tease him with the hot dog and give him alittle more when he jumps down the try the same on getting him to jump up keep teasing him with it it may take a min and it may take a week just keep working with him he will come around

It helped me to back the truck into a hillside so that the "jump" wasn't so high. Then coax him up on the gate with you and make sure he isn't scared of the box. I usually use a little food or treats to get him in the box and ready to ride.

Once you are sure he isnt' afraid of the box, he will more than likely start jumping right in.

Lance accidentally ruined old Bud from loading up when he was a pup. He had three different sized trucks (all red). LOL. Lance would use a different one when he hunted. Poor old Bud nailed his chest a couple of times on the taller two and then over jumped on the smallest one landing hard on the box frame. Now, he'll put his feet up on the tailgate, but that's as good as it gets. He then waites for you to give him a push up. Amy

with the box on the ground tie the hound to it and feed her in the box for about a week then load the box into the truck put her on a longer leash and bring her to the back of the truck let her see you put the food in and she will load herself you might have to help her a few times it also helps to move the box further into the truck so she can hop onto the tailgate then go in.

I have a tall walker male and he will only put his front feet up there and wait for you to pick his butt up and put him in. I don't mind thou it just makes a good time to put the tracking collar on him. He used to jump in the truck but I got a taller truck and when he tries to jump in he runs into the top of the dog box before his back feet hits the tail gate and just knocks himself off. So I can't really blame him for not jumping up there any more.

I have never taught a dog to load and never owned one that wouldn't load. But then I have never put time into a dog that didn't want to go hunting. If they want to hunt, they want to load. Sometimes it takes them awhile but they get it.

Do you have other dogs that are loading on their own? If they see the other dogs doing it and are all excited it usually only takes a few tries before they are loading fine. try taking the box off and loading the dog in the truck without the box first. tie em down and go for a short ride. if they like to ride it shouldn't take very long. but be sure to tie them down so they don't jump out and break a leg. if after a few tries esp taking the other dogs and this one still wont load them tie him out and leave his but watching you take the others for their ride. at that age he should be able to load easily in a standard size truck.
