Yup

Take it for what it is but I love reading and rereading walks with wick and I know he would say yes if he has it breed into him as a pup he still has it in him. Wicks opinion is you cant start them to late, just to early. assumeing he has never been messed with at all.

he has been on a chain in the persons backyard, very friendly, not shy but was never even named. He is not aggressive. I just got him and was afraid to turn him loose till he got used to me. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't just wasting time on him. as long as there is a chance I believe he deserves one.

He could be as good as any. While you are letting him get use to you teach him to come when called EVEN WITH DISTRACTIONS.
Teach him what good boy and bad dog means. Those commands will take a lot of the confusion out of training down the road and will speed things up greatly.

Thanks okie, I had him on a long lead monday evening and was calling him getting him to come to me ( I give him the name skidder) and I decided to let him run in the yard of lead and he took off. I was a little worried when he left , but within about 10 or 15 minutes he was back in the yard. He ran around on our property for about 30 more minutes and all of a sudden he fell treed. I had hung a coon up in a tree about 2 and a half months ago to train one of my pups with and I forgot about it. Their wasnt much left of it just a big dry coon shell with a little hair on it, but he was treeing it hard, I petted him and put him back in the pen and fed him. I dont know if this was good for him or not but it sure got me excited. The people I got him from said he had nevr been hunted and they never even gave him a name. He is registered and I know the man who raised the litter he came from. Hes come from some good dogs, none of them were comp dogs just pleasure dogs. The only problem I am having with him now is he is very strong and it is almost impossible to lead him. How do I break him from pulling on the lead?

What kind of person has a dog that long and doesn't name it?? LOL. Try wrapping the lead around his guts so when he pulls it cinches down on him while your leading him. Hope he turns out for ya.

I know, thats what I thought about the name. Thats one of the funnest things about getting a new pup for me is coming up with a name that fits his personality. Was you serious about the way to brake him from pulling or were you being funny, because it sound good in theory but as hard as he pulls I could see it being very damaging to his running gear. lol

Lmao!! Guts is right. It has worked well for me except for the dog I'm huntin now. If it don't work just cut ya a switch and keep him behind ya with it. I had a 70+ lbs redtick pullin me down a hill one night and all I could do is kick him in the nuts and he stopped on a dime!! LOL. Good luck.
