You can have a thyroid test done at the vet and make sure the levels are where theyre supposed to be.. A lot of times if a female gets fat when they get some age on them it throws thier thyroids levels off causing a hormone inbalance.. Hopes this helps..

yes, I bought a female that hadnt been in heat in 2 years and I had her tested and she had under active thyroids, The vet said to thin her down and have her retested.. I ran her hard for a few months and had her retested and they were still low so the vet put her on pills for 3 months and she came in heat.. Shes no longer has to take pills and she cycles every 6 months..

Jon thats a very good point and one reason I choose a reproductive specialist as oppose to my local vet. Because of distance the local vet. gets to draw blood sends it to the R.S. choosen testing lab. in this case MSU then the results r faxed to the R.S. and she will interpet them as oppose to the local vet. interpeting the results.
As long as the local vet understands its role it fessiable.

From Dr. Hutch:

Cabergoline: removes inhibition to heat cycle; has antiprolactin effects. It is given orally for 14-30 days, 5ug/kg body weight. It is 70% effective and works in 2-3 weeks.

Deslorelin: injectable gonadotrophin-releasing hormone super-agonist. It stops the production of testosterone & estrogen. It is used to inhibit LH & FSH. It was developed for mares to prevent seasons (they come into season, then stay out). It's from Australia. It's an implant (called Ovuplant for mares, Suprelorin in dogs. (See peptech.com) that's injected into the lip of the vulva like a microchip. It must be removed when no longer needed. It is 94% effective in inducing a season in 5-7 days. It is also good for a silent season.
