Raising Meat Rabbits
Hey All:
I'm wanting to raise a few meat rabbits.
Anyone know anybody around my Cincinnati / Dayton, Ohio that raises them?
What are the best eating breeds?
Any information would be appreciated.
Justin

A FRIEND OF MINE RAISES MEAT RABBITS AND RED WORMS IN THE WASTE UNDER THE CAGES. MAKES PRETTY GOOD $ DOING IT. AND LITTLE CLEAN UP INVOLVED.

Your best bet is to go with California or New Zealand for meat they are the best .
Check with your local 4-H club. That way you get the info you need, and help out some kids.
When I was a kid I raised alot of rabbits, found I liked crossing New Zealands with Lardies. The average litter size went from 6 to 9. Lardies bred to each other have regularly 14 per litter.
I'm sort of a clean freak when it comes to the dog yard. I had a few rabbits and after a month... I could not take the massive amount of clean-up.
Any large breeds ,they all taste the same.Don't waste your money on pure bred stuff. You will find some does have large litters and raise them all and the next doe will have 3-4 and eat every one. It's best not to mess with does and ther litter till the bunnies are starting to open there eyes. Some does like to be left alone with there bunnies, just check them once a day.I think I ate rabbit a couple times a week when I was a kid. Those were my first lessons on butchering stuff. Those memories go as far back as I can remember.I have a COOL mom.
Thanks for the information everyone.
I was thinking with going with the New Zealands.
We'll see what happens.
Merry Christmas!!

RABBITS
I have raised them for years, new zealands are the best and what I have now. They grow fast and with feed prices today that is a must. From birth they will be ready for butcher in 10 to 12 weeks. Dont go with just any old large breed or you will have more money in them by the time they are big enough to butcher than you will get out of them. The mess is not that bad and all my waste goes straight to the garden makes the best fertilize. I have plenty I could sell you, I have a friend that lives close to cincinati and comes over to coon hunt with me a lot so it is not that far.

i have a barn full right now.. it started as meat rabbits and then my fiance decided she wanted to show a couple rabbits.. now we have new zelands red and whites, some cali's and a few polish..
I raised californian rabbits for 4H for years. I always like them the best, seemed to produce the best meat the quickest. Thats what I would go with, and watch it because they multiply fastttt!! lol
