Use of iphone?

Has/does anyone tracked their hunting dog(s) useing their iphone?

Seen a nice phone last nite while hunting and I heard of these phones haveing that capability.
I was amazed at exactly what that phone could do as far as locating goes.

If that capability exist it would put garmin to shame.
The resolution that phone displayed was surreal.
I was think of getting a garmin till I say that phone display all my hunting terrain etc.
Anyone?

My motorola droid uses google maps and its great. I can mark the truck and find my way back. Allthough the astro is my number one source of "where am I"

Motorola Droid here too. Super nice my source for internet in fact I'm typing this from it right now. There are every map imaginable for these phones and some that are not. They all can be used utilizing GPS signal. There are maps on here that will show me the front door on your house and allow me to count the number of windows in it. However I've not herd of any dog tracking device being used with a phone yet. Believe me given the capabilities and technology being used in today's cell phones and the probability of that happening is just a matter of if someone felt like doing it or not. The technology is already there and well beyond. You can track other phones from a phone so I guess you could but that would require you buy two phones and you strapping the other one on the dog, lol. Technology is more than available, demand for something like this isn't.

I mostly use my phone for the net but I downloaded an app called easytether for free. You can connect the phone to a pc and surf unsecured sites with it. I'm going to buy the full app to surf secured sites.

I'm sure Garmin could do a better job w/their map cards.
After what I saw on the iphone and what I saw on the garmin display I would compare garmin map display to a comic book.lol.

GARMIN GET W/THE PROGRAM incorporate what the iphone has into the garmin system.

The Garmin maps are great. They are standard topo maps that are stored in your memory, and it just shows where the dog is on that map. The topo map doesn't take a great deal of memory especially compared to the sattelite maps.

The phones use the internet to access sattelite maps, too much info to store it. All that's great, but that's alot of info to try and get back from a collar to a hand held.

You can take your Garmin and put it on Google earth and see those pictures you were talking about, and see everywhere your dog went. It will show you in detail, he struck at the creek, took him up around the edge of the field then treed in the wet hollar. All that info is available to you now with the Garmin. It's just not available real time.

To get it real time they would have to be able to transmit and interpret all that information they do now (latitude of dog, GPS coordinates), access the internet and pull down the sattelite info and superimpose it on the map, and send it all back to the hand held. That's not easy to do.

I wont complain about either. Both today's smart phones and Garmin's tracking devices are pretty state of the art equipment. However the potential for more is already there just a matter of someone taking advantage of it and using it.

Garmin has been doing their homework though. There are better maps available for you're current Astro handheld device. These maps are in the form of satellite imagery and its pretty cool compared to the Topo maps were all so familiar with. The maps are a 1year subscription for $30 available through Garmins website and you download them onto you're device through a computer using high-speed internet. The name of the maps are Birdseye Satellite Imagery™.

Here is a video of the install you can also go to Garmins website for more information or to view this video.

After what I saw that iphone do in real time no Garmin for me.
I do not want to have to put the garmin on google earth just to track.
Just a matter of time for the iphone tracking.
I'll wait

When I field tested Tracker's GPS tracking system, the software on the smart phone was called Tracker MyWay.

Tracker Finland calls it Tracker Hunter:

With the I phone I'm sure there will be a yearly /monthly fee. How much are you willing to pay?
