UKC Staff/ Hunt ?

Do you have to tree a dog before it can be handled in i hole? The rule book says you may get closer to the area to see if they are in a hole, and that at least one dog must show the end of trail. But I can't find any where that a dog can or can not be handled with or with out being treed. Please clear this up for me and point out the rule(s) that apply. Thank you.

5(a) is the rule you are looking for.

"....if not called treed, cast may proceed to general area, and track will be considered finished if dogs, by actions either tree barking or otherwise, show to satifaction of judge, coon to be there."

In case of running coon in hole or place of refuge other than a tree, handler may call dog treed. However, if not called treed, cast may proceed to general area, and track can be considered finished if dogs, by actions either tree barking or otherwise, show to the satisfaction of the Judge, coon to be there. One dog must show end of trail.

If they show to the satisfaction of the judge , they are handled and circled.

See I no thats the only rule I can find but it's not right that you can handle a dog with out treeing it when you know its at the end of the trail barking treed. why should you be able to score a hole with out treeing at least one dog if you can't score a tree with out one dog being called treed.

The reason for not forcing a tree call is most hadlers know when their dog is not treed up a tree and dont want to risk a tree call and then have a dog leave and take minus.

If you tree the dog , he HAS to stay and the 5 is run.

Using this rule , only one dog has to show the end of trail to the satisfaction of the judge.

For instance , the dogs trail to a barn and only one dog is inside barking with the others milling around the outside. The dogs can be handled and circled. If any dog is not at the location , then the 8 would be run on him.

This rule can be a little dicey , but that is why good and fair judgeing is important... Good luck..

Alot of guys won't tree in a hole cause they don't wan't to take there minus both ways when the wrong critter is there. Or the dog dosen't stay the whole 5 min. If a dog is at the end of the trail shouldn't he/she hold it's tree bark as long as it takes rather its at a tree, hole, barn or where ever. If my dog is treed it better stay put.

I train to leave the holes alone. Coon going in there or not. We have alot of caves, hole coon and I dont want to walk to that. If in a cast leave that hole coon alone and go find another track to run or let another dog keep the 8 running. But Ill take a chance on getting caught by the 8 and not by a dog taking its head out of the ground and minused that way. OH is a blesse state to coon hunt.
