is it too late to train

im getting a 17 month male redbone.. the guy im getting it from says that he will bark at cage coon a couple of times but thats it and will run for about 10 mins and come back.. is it too late to train this redbone.. i plan on putting in bench shows but i would like for him to be able to tree..

it may have bad habits to work on but no, 17 months is not too old to work with.

17 months is a good age to start. i had a walker male i started when he was 3. he learned real quick. and turned out to be one of my best hounds. i started him by spotting coons in corn fields and then leting him work realy hot tracks if you walk with your dog and encourage him at the tree you will get him on the right track

I don't think all hope is lost on most dogs until they are 2 1/2 or 3 years old.

I dont believe all hope is ever lost on a dog, regardless of age...not talking geriatrics, if they are too old physically, just tough luck but if they had the ability and desire at 1 year old, it should still be there at 6...at least from my experience

blue style

That makes sense. I made the mistake of hooking a buddy of mine up with a dog.... and he never hunted him more than 5 or 6 times in the 1st 3 years. The dog is now 4 and ran and treed with other dogs a month or so ago after not being hunted for almost 2 years and was never really started to begin with.

it may take more to get them going as an older dog isnt as exciteable as a pup, but that is a good general rule of thumb...most reliable, trustworthy hound I have ever cut loose was 3 before she got any timber time

thanks is there any special techniques i should use for a older dog?

Posted by CX3 on 04-19-2009 02:42 AM:

I would just hunt him with a old tree dog and let him come into it. A real natural coondog will train themselves but they got to get timber time. Let him do his thing. Its never too late, but some wait too long if that makes any sense.
