I have a really nice elvis male. Beautiful. This past fall he treed coons in a flash; looked like a pro at 16 months old. Over the past couple weeks he has flat gone down hill. He's 18 months old now and; I think it's the bad weather. It was 14 degrees out last night and I was hunting on a frozen river bed. Was it my fault he did so poorly or is he just flat mediocre? Have any of you ever had dogs that could tree coons, outside of dens, in 14 degree weather? Should I start staying home on these bad nights so I don't get discouraged at the dog. On top of all of this; we got cussed out by a land owner. The pup ran a track down the river and it seemed like he was just running up and down the river running a track back and forth. You would think he would have at least landed on a den somewhere?
let me know what you think. call 317-946-1820 if you have any good advice. or just to talk a little about this young dog. to me he's very valuable. always first strike, very independent; been running since he was 6 months old. could tree a drag at 5 months old. loves to kill a coon!! what should I do next???

Its a pretty rare dog that can get much done at 14* especially a young dog like yours. Id be pretty picky about the nights i hunted him, a young dog with alot of drive can get frustrated and when that happens alot if they cant find a coon to run they are gonna run something. I have a 3 year old bluetick that seems to get herself under a coon no matter what the weather but she will cover alot of ground and usually just fall treed. One of those bad nights once in a while wont hurt as long as you mix it up with some easy ones.
keep the shocker on him and keep hammering him in the poor weather... sounds to me like he knows how to do it right, now he just has to learn how to do it in the cold. I have treed coon on the outside with young dogs less than 2 in temperatures less than 10 degrees.... you just gotta bring it out in him! goodluck!

No worries with your dog...this cold weather has alot if not all to do with it. If the dog is feeling good (not sick) then its probably all the weather. I was having great hunts till the other night we treed 2 den trees and 1 went to the ground. Tonight on the other hand id bet will be a different story here in kentucky. Its warming up here tonight if it is there put him out tonight if you can and that might tell you the story though seems sudden temp changes make coon act in different ways too here anyway.
Won the hunt Friday the 5th with 13 degree temperature, 225+ and 225 circle, no minus. Dog is 3, but I've put him in the woods when it's 5 degrees with full moon and the other extreme 90 degrees and very dry. Take him by himself on some of these nights, if he has the desire and brains, he'll get it figured out. He is still young, but you ought to see some signs of improvement this kill season.

what's the bottom side of his ped look like?
bottom side of pedigree
stylish jet female, hickory nut harry, night heat abby, yadkin tar rattler, took him out tonight. Deer jumped out of the woods and he never paid one bit of attention to it. It was a full moon so no tracks tonight. I was proud he didn't touch the deer. I know he's not running deer. If he's running trash at all at least I know it's not a deer!!! the other 9 month old pup we had chased it a quarter mile. he came to me while all this was taking place. Way to go Jim!!
