Real Live Raccoons

WHERE DID THIS TERM COME FROM I HAVE BEEN HUNTING 30 SOME YEARS AND MY HOUNDS HAVE ALWAYS TREED REAL LIVE RACCOONS NEVER SAW A FAKE COON IN THE WOODS

My dog treed a real dead one a few weeks back. Got treed on a den with a split on the bottom. The amish kid I was hunting with stuck the gun barrel in and shot a couple times then reached in and pull the coon out. Froze colder than tha hooves of hell. Kid thinks I got the coldest nose track dog alive.

REAL

I THINK SOME FOLKS THINK THOSE CRITTERS WITH THE SLICK TAIL & BIG GRIN ON THEIR FACE ARE "RACCOONS", WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT THEIR "GREAT" TREE DOGS. OF COURSE, THESE ARE NOT "REAL LIVE RACCOONS"

i think

it means not feeder bucket coons.....were a dog has to go out and hunt not just 20 yrds to a bucket

I've always thought of it as a term used when discussing a tree dog and it's accuracy....Real Live Racoons vs. slick trees, off game, etc.

It's just a term, every sport has terms that become popular but that may not make much sense....other coonhunting terms:

"Tree my dog"

"Strike brownie" (this one I have heard after a hunter broke wind)

"Jack the tree"

many others......

It's a term people use to try and convince you that they have the best dogs in the world.
Whether it be a stud dog , brood bitch , pups , etc.

But , what cracks me up , is when the dog misses and they say , " Well , they're just dogs. " LOL

As God is my witness

I swear to you my old Jed dog really did tree a dead coon up about 8 to 10 feet in a fork of a tree. Same as the above story. He was stiff and real cold. Me and the hunting buddy tried and tried to figure that one out and never could.

I figured Tim Ball used it in his adds and it just caught on as a large sales pitch word.

Last season I had a pair of dogs working a track along a little creek. About the time I thought they were going to get it figured out they both shut up. I didn't know what to think so I started walking their way. When I had found them they were in a brush pile stretching a coon. I figured they must have killed him quick because I hadn't even heard a squeal. I had already started skinning him when I realized that it was already cold. Makes me wonder what it died from to begin with.

I think it comes from another _KC where you can win without seeing a coon. You just say you treed 3 coons but couldn't get them to look. At most of their hunts, you win just as much as if you scored 1000+.

In that same _KC, you may have a dog that goes out and trees 3 coons that you see. He doesn't win any more than that other dog so in an effort to draw a distinction between these two dogs, you say he has treed "real live raccoons".
