Snake Bite

Went hunting Saturday night, we were having a good night, when my dog got snake bit. He was bitten on his muzzle just above his nose. When I found him he was already swollen up pretty bad. His head looked kinda like a basketball. I keep a snake bite kit in my dog box and when we got him back to the truck I pumped him full of benadryl and put him in the dog box. When I got him home he didn't want to get out of the dog box, I gave him another dose of benadryl loosened his collar. This was about 3 am, at 7 am I gave him one more dose of benadryl, at 11 am he was acting like he was feeling ok and ate like he normally does. By 10 pm Sunday night the swelling had gone down at least 50%. I have given him a couple of more doses of benadryl and this morning he looks amost normal and acts like he's ready to go again. I'm not sure what kind of snake it was, I am assuming a copperhead or water moccasin. Just checking to see what you guys do to your dogs for snake bites.

Great job of getting the benedryl in this dog ASAP. Biggest concern with head bites is swelling of the larynx and respiratory occlussion. The other concern is local infection as these wounds commonly get infected and the skin sloughs around the bite wound. I usually put these guys on broad spectrum antibiotics for 2 weeks, and anti-inflammatories for a few days until the pain and swelling are gone.

It seems as though the bites to the legs and trunk create more systemic effects and are more cardiotoxic than bites to the face. Not sure why that is. Dogs that are bit on the trunk or legs should be seen by a veterinarian ASAP. I think these should get anti-venom and IV fluid support with close monitoring for at least 24 hours.

You did the right thing with the Benedryl. Just keep monitoring for recurrance of swelling that may indicate an infection.

We had one get bit last month on her muzzle beside her nose.She came back in(which is not like her)then wouldn't hunt just laid down beside the truck.So we put her in the box and in about 10 mins we noticed her starting to swell.We gave her a dose of benedryl and when we got home rubbed some kerosene on the bite and by the next morning the swelling had went down quite a bit.Three days later she was back to normal.

Plenty o snakes.......

I keep a bottle of benadryl in my dog box and some 6 ml (cc) syringes. (no needles) I filled the syringe with benadryl and gave it to him orally. I gave it to him as soon as I got him back to the truck and about 2 1/2 hrs later when I got him home and a third time about 4 hrs after the second dose. I gave him a total of 7 doses, after the third one it was about every 8 hrs. I don't know if this was good or not, but swellilng is totally gone and he shows no signs of being bitten. I took him hunting last night and he was as good as ever. I also keep some stuff called DSMO in my kit, alot of the guys here in Texas sware by it, but since the bite was so close to his nose I did not try it.

i read on here a couple of years ago that some experments in Australia showed that giving large doses of vitamin c would take care of a snake bite. i had a young hound bit in the throat and gave 1000 cc pill to him 3 times a day for two days and he was well in two days. it was a copperhead
