On the chain
I always put my dogs I'm getting ready to start on a chain for a few weeks to settle them down. Of course it takes a while before they learn to work the chain with out getting all hung up. I've been watching the shows about Alaska and I see they use a different set up. Anyone use the set up they use for the sled dogs if so I would like to know where to get something like that.
chains
I have my hounds on swing arms. I have a 3 inch pipe in the ground. A 2 inch pipe inside that welded on a flat plate with a 30 inch long 1 inch sticking out from that. Hook welded on the end to hold the chain. The important part is the length of the chain. My hounds seem to like this setup. If my old flip phone worked better I'd send you a video of how it looks.

Shaun I think what your talking about is what I'm wanting just not sure how I want to build it (right). I have a gang chain I use when I take dogs to the field trials (foxhounds) good for having a bunch of dogs on for a few days when they wore out. Wanting something for wild pups so they don't get hung up.
Dog run
If you got room a dog run works great, both of my dogs are on a dog run . I’ve got a 1/4 in steel cable in between the trees probably 40 foot long and I’ve got a chain hooked to a roller that’s 12 foot long !
So they’ve got about 480 square foot of running room.

We use a system like what Shaun is describing on my son’s bear dogs. We live in northern Michigan and get about 160” of snow in the winter. Where the chain fastens to the stake is about 2 feet above the ground. Snow never interfere with chain tangling, works good in summer also. Gary

Someone sent me some pictures of a piece of rebar bent with a washer weld on it and a piece welded on the end to attach the chain and drop it in a pipe I got the concept now. I have to have pictures lol.
dig a hole in the center of the dogs run area. Get some type of cylinder or bucket and bury it in the hole with the top about level with the top of the ground. Put a short length of fairly heavy chain in the bucket, leaving about 12 inches sticking out. Fill the bucket with concrete and then hook a smaller chain to the piece you left out. Never had a dog pull the bucket up or get tangled up. Jr.Steelman
chains
Yes Gary, I too live in northern Mi. Makes a big diff when those chains aren't dragging. The chains last a very long time, just keep an eye on the swivel end of the snaps.

That chain gang is what the old dog traders called a trot line.
