New to Coonhounds

Hello all,

Long time Beagler from Northern Michigan making the transition over to Coonhounds. We've been without a hound since losing our last one this past summer. My daughter and I have been working on the Mrs. trying to get her blessing for a Red Bone for the last 3-4 months without much success. This past Saturday, the Mrs. and the daughter had a Girl Scouts function at the local animal shelter, where they both fell in love with a Bluetick. Unfortunately the dog had already been spoken for, and the people were coming in later to pick him up.

I wasn't going to let this opportunity to get a hound pass me by though. Spent the better part of the day yesterday calling on pups all over the country, until I found the exact pup that the Mrs. wanted, at a breeder that I felt like has a strong bond with his hounds. The cool thing is, I was calling all over the Midwest, only to find the pup just a couple hours from home.

Of course now I need to find another one, because I promised my boy that I'd get him a "boy dog" and the pup that my wife fell in love with is a girl.

Is there any recommended reading for people? I've spent hours scouring coondawg and ordered "Walk with Wick" to start learning. Is there any must do's, or don't do's that we should be aware of?

Sounds like your prolly right on track if you've been running Beagle's. Only thing I'd do different is get a B&T.

find you a local club and go to some of there hunt's, take the kids and ask around about tagging along one for a pleasure hunt or if you know some that has hounds around you see if you can't tag along with them when they go. the biggest thing with pups is socialize them let the kids play with them. I personnel think this helps the dog and it is never to early to start command training them. Find you a coon tail somewhere off the road and let your kids run around the yard with it and let the pups run after them. just some ideas that have worked for me.

I would also get you an older trained hound,,you will learn awhole lot from it,,,that's the way I would go just starting out in the coonhound world

Walk with wic is a great book I always go to it for questions

Trying to find a club up by us. Have found quite a few downstate. I'm a pretty big believer in letting pups socialize with the kids. IME, inside dogs handle better in the woods, as they are used to the interactions. My observational experiences only, too each their own.

My brother dabbles in trapping, and just sold off. But we'll find a roadkill or something somewhere to play with.

Coonhound pups can be a handful indoors. Having had beagles, you've got the idea, but coonhounds are a lot taller and think nothing of putting all 4 feet on the kitchen counter until you teach them not to, especially if you encourage themby putting them on show benches. Doesn't mean you can't do it, just that they get into things and places that more civilized breeds rarely do. I've got 3 redbones that sleep in the bed with us.

Walk with Wick is good, but the training methods are pretty old-fashioned. Most coonhounds are pretty sensitive to your approval or disapproval, and pretty eager to please. Of course, a few are knuckleheads. They are later to mature than many breeds and may go through teenage rebellions until about 2, even later for a few.

Starting with two pups at once is extra difficult. If you can persuade your family to let you get an older started dog as the second one, it will be much easier. When training in the woods, 2 pups together will go exploring much deeper than one dog alone, so you may want to work them in the woods separately, at least some of the time. If you can take one at a time with a sweet-tempered older dog, so much the better. Make some coonhunting friends and this should be easy.

Good luck! No breed is better with kids than the coonhounds are.

ps If you want a redbone and they want a bluetick, get the kids a copy of Where the Red Fern Grows, either the book or the movie, and you may be able to convert them...

If you have trained beagles, making the transition should be a smooth one. Dogs are dogs. Tritronics has a blog with John Wick, it's free and the information is more up to date.

If you like beagles, I would go with a walker, being there tri color.

Main thing when buying a pup, is finding someone that knows what there doing, most don't. That being said the best pup I have owned was dirt cheap, and was from a cross made on a back yard stud dog.

I would imagine it's no different with beagles. The one thing about coon hounds though to get a good one you will need to single it out and hunt it alone, a lot. Getting 2 pups will pry mean one of the pups will be shorted a lot on hunting time or they both will get shorted. I would wait a year then get another or buy your son a finished hound, then You won't have to wait a year to go hunting.
