female with mastitis?

My female had pups on thursday last week, she had 12 and has lost 6 of them, She hasnt lost any for 2 days now and the remaining pups are growing like weeds. Last time she was an excellent mother. This morning i noticed she was swollen around one of her nipples, and it was warmer than normal. i milked it out and it was off color. I called the vet he said to give her pcn and stop my the office so he could give me some antibiotics for her. Which i did. My question is there anything else i need to do? He said to let the pups nurse to get the stuff out. and ive been rubbing it trying to get it down?

yep just keep letting the pups nurse and you can put warm compresses on the infected teet and massage it . the anti-biotics work fast . it's not uncommon anymore for some reason . we, well I don't remember ever having this trouble years ago . but have had several gyps that this happened to in the last few years . be sure and keep the toenails on the pups trimmed . my vet gave me clavamox for it and all was fine in a few days , but use the anti-biotics till they are gone .

My vet told me to not let them nurse when I dealt with this the first time. I have dealt with mastitis about 3 or 4 times. If those pups were mine and had the time I would bottle feed them. If you don't have the time then you can hope for the best, because the rest probably won't make it. I had to take the dam to vet every time because they got down so bad. The last time the pups were 3 weeks old and I got lucky that they would eat from a feed pan. I personally would not try to save them at that age, but that's just me from losing pups after all the effort it took me to try and save them.

thanks fellas, I dont have the time to bottle feed them for 4 weeks so mother nature will have to take care of them. Im going to let them continue nursing and hope the meds work fast.

In our experience raising pups, we've had a few females get mastitis. Some worse than others, sounds like yours is mild. I'd say the pups would be ok to nurse, just make sure she gets her antibiotics. They usually work pretty quick. Good luck with the pups & female!

that's what it used to be blamed on cleo . but I have had it in a couple of gyps the past few years and my whelping boxes are kept clean as can be on a daily bases . I am more prone to thinking it's something in the feed these days . but that's just me .

Mastitis can be caused by not feeding enough, or never getting it all out... in my opinion, she started producing for 12, but only has to feed 6, so now the pups don't need as much milk but her body hasn't slowed down her milk production yet, therefore shes retaining milk.

Use the antibiotics from the vet, warm compresses, massage it and try to avoid letting the pups nurse from where the infection is, if you can help it. Women tend to have this same problem if they don't wean their child, and just stop breastfeeding cold turkey. Another thing that may help on washing her tits with a warm wash cloth after feeding, or as many feedings your around for.

Thanks for all the help. The swelling was starting to go down as early as this morning, and was noticably less this afternoon. I dont think it was caused by a dirty pen or whelping box. they were both cleaned out just prior to her delivering.

mastitis

Mastitis can be caused from a variety of things unclean areas, stress, change in diet, a cut on her teats, alot of stuff could have caused it I know cows can get it from a thousand different things. We always milked the teats that were infected out really really good and took bag balm and gave cows udders a really deep massage. If it was bad enough we would treat with antibiotics and keep using bag balm. If it didn't get better then we would cull low producing cows or dry the bad quarter off in high producers. I would try the bag balm and see if it would help any along with the anti biotics ik it probably sounds stupid to some but I've seen it help many, many dairy cows. Good luck
