Coon caught on ground
turned loose last night right at dark and the hounds struck a track pretty quick and ran about 150yds when we began to hear a coon squalling and dogs scuffling. i knew right away what had happened even though ive never experienced this before. it was a wierd situation and i dont know why the coon didnt run up a tree when it heard the dogs coming. it wasnt like they caught it in the middle of a field where it didnt have a chance, it was laying near plenty of big trees to climb and had plenty of time to do so. i noticed it was a sow and when i skinned it i found 2 kits ready to be born any day so the only thing i can think of is that she came down to get a drink and started to go in labor while on the ground? or she may have been injured previously. any sujestions what else could have happened?

maybe your dog climbed up the tree and pulled out, or maybe bigfoot knocked it out to the dogs...who knows

You can skin coon in May in Virginia?
No the dogs had already killed it when i got to them so i didnt want to just waste it so i brought it home and skinned it to see if it had kits

I have been hearing about people saying they are already seeing kits so the main reason i skinned it was to get an idea of how far along the sows are around here.

I have had many dogs catch coon on the ground in the last 40 years. It has usually been after a long race and the coon just refused to climb.
Full of kittens and she was too heavy to climb fast. Happens alot this time of year.
