Dog?

Guys need some advice. I have a 2.5 year old walker that I always hunted with my old dog that was doing great until the old dog passed. He was doing great and has treed a few coons on his own. Well, since the old dog passed he won't get out from under your feet. I have tried everything I know off to get him to go including cutting a switch. But he will turn and head for the truck or just lay down. When another dog strikes he will go. But most of the time not until another dog strikes first. I have a 9 month old pup that I'm trying to train and I'm afraid its going to ruin her also. Should I cull him and hunt her alone. Sale him and get another trainer. Or is there anything I can do? Thanks for the help. All I have is him and the pup. I always start my pups with an older dog and when they are doing good I single them out. I don't know but I sure don't want her doing this crap. The pup will get off to herself most of the time but not always she is still young and not opened on tree or track yet. Any advice is welcomed.

As far as the pup goes, I wouldn't hunt it with another dog period!! Get it to track and tree a drag or caged coon. Then hunt her alone, and give it a chance to get good on its own! That should help in avoiding that same problem, sounds like the other one was dependent on the old dog! im sure you've tried it but if not.... Go alone with the older dog to an area you can put him on a really hot track, sit down somewhere and don't say a word to him or touch him! hopefully he gets bored and goes hunting. Be patient, give him a couple hours and if it doesn't work try again the another day! if you think hes got it in him its worth a few tries anyways jmo

take the 2 year old by himself sit n wait. cutting a switch surely isn't gona work. hunting with yet another dog really wont get u any farther with this dog. if u have to or wonta walk hunt u can try that but he is begging for his turn to shine. its not easy sitting there wasteing your nites but its that or move him on.

Wes, I think your right. He has ran track and treed on his own but was never hunted alone. The pup is doing pretty good. She has seen a caged coon and wouldn't have no part of it until I got the older dog off the chain. Then she went crazy for it. I was going to let it go that night and see if she would track or tree it. But my aunt passed away and I never got to. My brother in law let it go where we hunt at. The biggest issue is he was never singled out and probably to late to now. He has a lot of things I like. BIG mouth and hard tree dog. But now I can't get him away from the freakin truck. The pup has 2 world champs in her bloodline and 1 being her sire. I'm super afraid she is going to end up just like the other dog. A Lead better, Lead would do it better than hunting it....

Try like the previous post says just sit in the woods somewhere where there r thick coons he will get bored and wonder around he doesn't have the confidence to go.buy his self if not just give him to me

HAHA...Aint nothing in life free, Or if they are I haven't found it.....That's a problem I'm in a very low coon population area. Sometimes he will hunt perfect, But most of the time he makes me want to put a bullet in his head. I got a 9 month old pup that's not doing crap on tree or track that gets out WAY better than him. I took them out tonight and while he was hanging around the truck she was almost 200 yards by herself.

Try setting out some feeders.getting some in the area and get him on a hot track by his self might help him some

The feeder sounds like a good idea it Sure won't hurt anything

Its hard to waste time on a dog you don't have confidence in but it sounds like there's some things you like! Try treating him like a pup for a little bit, show him a caged coon and let it go for him!! And I would seriously keep the little female away from him until he figures it out a little on his own, it'll be better for both dogs! Hope it works out for ya, try to be patient..... Even though its tough

I have got feeders out right now. I think I have about 8 out in 3 different hollows and we have been hitting a few tracks off of them but have yet to put anything in a tree off of them . I hadn't thought about the cage coon thing with him. I just may have to try it sure can't hurt anything. He will run a hot track its just getting him on them is my problem. He did hunt a little better last night with out so many dogs around. I am going to try to hunt him by himself for a while and see what happens. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for all the advice. I hate to cull him cause he does mind good, he's not ill, Has a HUGE mouth and is a hard tree dog. I just can't get him to go hunting.
