How to Coonhunt?/ I dont know how to name this thread

How do you guys hunt? I just let my two dogs walk in front of me and they find a track every now and then? Tell me if you use tracking collars? How they work? Do you follow your hounds when they strike a track or wait til they are treed? I need all the info I can get on how to actually coon hunt? Sorry if this sounds stupid I am just 13 years old and trying to get into it. I have my dogs trained alright I just want to know how to actually hunt them the right way? Thankyou

I turn mine loose and wait. If she is getting out of hearing I walk a little closer But most of the time I will not do any walking until she gets treed.

to see a young person getting in the sport i started when i was alittle fellar with my grandpap just turn them loose and wait for them to check back with you then just start walking in the direction you want to go they should go again iwait till they come back before i move if the strike a track and start getting to where they might get out of hearing i start walking and listen for them i dont keep dogs that you need all that high dollar tracking stuff on to find them i pleasure hunt all my life

I like to turn the dogs loose from the dog box and wait on the tailgate of the truck until they get treed, but there's no wrong way to coonhunt...hunt whatever way works best for you, your dogs, and the terrain you're hunting...if you're from southeast Nebraska, you're probably not far from me...you or your folks are welcome to call the below number if you'd like to ask a bunch of coonhunting questions...be happy to let you hunt with some other dogs, show you how tracking systems, shock collars, etc work sometime too...

I haft to agree with owen, there's really no bad way. It has to do alot with how you train you're hounds. Some will take off out of the box and some want you close. I own some of both and it doesn't matter as long as I'm in the woods. Some of the best advice I can give you don't get caught up in the money game. Garmin and shocking system are nice but not needed. There's plenty of cheap trackers out there. But I would invest in a good light. Good luck to you. and remember a fat hound is a happy hound!

I personally think every hunter and hound hunts in different ways. Sure some people hunt a lot a like & others as different as night & day. What matters to me is being in the woods with man's best friend. Sometimes I sit and wait for my dog to strike & tree, other times I might walk behind him a ways. Depends on where I'm hunting and if I'm having any luck. I think the trick is to find a hound that suits you. Whether you buy a started one or raise one from a pup. I personally perfer training from a pup myself. That way he knows what I expect from him and he knows what to expect from me. Ex: I know if he hunts a area for a while with no luck he's going to go deeper till he finds one. Like wise he knows that if I call or tone him to come back in a few times I want him to hunt closer.
You'll find your own style and get in a groove. Take a little advice from older hunters and then tweak it to satisfy your wants, needs, & expectations. Good luck & happy hunting!

many moons ago

we hunted off mules.then 4 wheelers.... now off the tail gate...

I can't stand in the road or on the tailgate ... I gotta be in the woods , same as fishing ..I noodle , I can't sit and watch a pole.

I get in the woods and cast em' .. when they strike I follow or find high ground where I can listen to them work ... I gotta have a good seat for the show and if I miss out on hearing the race or the dogs locate then I'm like a fat kid that flung open a donut box and it's empty.

I enjoy being in the woods and just seeing what is out there ... I hunt alot in the mornings and listening to the hounds as the sun rises is alot of fun.
