Hunting in cold weather?

How many take there pups out in the winter and try to train I've heard you can do more harm than good to a pup this time of year but the rut being in would that change it's supposed to get down to single digits tonight and thinking about stayin at the house. Would it hurt if I took em out anyways?

you would do more good if you took them out in the daytime, tree some squirrels, coon seem to move in the day this time of year, plus you can see what they are actually doing, i have started alot of pups this time of year

I am sure you can, but its not for me. When I start one I like there to be a string of good night and good weather. Around here the weather is too choppy this time of year and you may get a good night, then a poor night, then a foot of snow and get shut down for a week. When I get one to start I like to be more or less guarenteed that I can go the next month or two in a row.

i agree Ron, but if one has time to do anything with a pup its a plus, better than sitting in the kennel getting stupid. got one going now that needs pounded in the woods at night but not in this weather

Yea my pups are nine months old and I hunted em every other night last weeks and the weather was high 30s at night and now it drops all of a sudden and I don't wanna just leave em in the pen but I dont wanna take them out and get them on junk again ( have a bad problem with more deer than there are coon)

i started my dog this time last year...but, only on decent nites...real cold we stayed home....i wanted to know for sure he would have no trouble finding a track....

i agree with the more harm than good on bad nites...they are prone to getting bored and burning a deer or other off game...where on a better nite they should find a coon before they find trash....


also i am not a fan of bad nites and pups due to den trees...i dont praise mine much at dens unless i can see the coon....running tracks backwards and treeing on dens just because they smell strong this time of year is common...


the coon rut can be great hunting but at the same time it can be tough...some long tracks..strong smelling coon and dens...

the other plus to this time ofbyear is kill season is in..which is why i started mine....i dont kill a ton of coon...but when i.am pup training, i like to shoot every coon they tree till they are confident and solid...this was my dogs first full kill season....ive knocked down 25 or so to him...he is a different dog...hunts harder...trees harder...and is just even better and nicer than he was before...much more confident and rock solid...and he isnt a dog that cares to chew on a coon...as soon as its done kicking he just looks at me...i never thought it would help him...but it made a difference...

just my thoughts..good luck!


even though he will be 2 in late april, i still wont hunt him on nites i think will be bad....not fun for me and thats what its all about....i will hunt colder and rougher nites than when i was training....i like him to have to hunt harder and iron out a bad track...but when.it is in the teens and windy and snow on the ground i feed him a fat meal and keep him warm..

every one i different but for me if i can take it i know the coon can. i also want my pup to have exp. in every situation. my pup is 6 1/2 months old and has treed 4 coon so far. the last one she struck and treed first, that was 2 nights ago in 19 to 20 degree weather
