Night Hunting Rabbits

Is it legal to rabbit hunt after dark or what is the law on this?

My uncle did that back in the 80's...lost his car all for a little cottontail.

I don't think they have legalized it, but all game laws vary by state so look up you state DNR website.

We used to go get us a couple to eat at night with a flashlight and a .22 with a scope. I don't think its legal but we always did it behind the house around the field rows so noone ever knew anyways.

You can do it legal if you get a permitt in Tennessee for crop damage. The nursery workers used to do it all the time. The nursery owner had to fill out a form with the TWRA and document rabbit damage and they could be controlled by spotlighting them legally.

They can do this with deer too. The catch is that you can't do anything but kill them and leave them laying. For deer I think the required time is 2 days. Don't make sense to me to waste the meat like that, but I guess the TWRA figgures people will only use that for true damage control if they can't use the hide or meat.

Now it was the middle 90's or early 90's last time I knew anybody with a permitt so they may not do it any more, but you could check into your states regs and see.

In Indiana, a game warden told us once that night hunting rabbits was a popular and legal sport as there is no time of day requirement on rabbits. The catch though, is that you can not use of light . He said on moonlight nights it is popular in some areas, and legal to take rabbits as long as you do not have a light.
