Skiddish on the lead?

I haven't had this dog but about 3 months. She is lead broke but she is real skiddish and hunkers down when I walk up to her. When she isn't on a lead and i have her in the pen I can walk up to her and she is fine. What's weird is when we are huntin she won't come to us. She will walk up close but run off. We pretty much have to tackle her. She hunts her butt off and we are pretty sure she will be a good dog. It's just she don't like being caught and she might have been whipped by or on the lead. What y'all think? How do I fix this? I work with her a lot.

some are just like that from not being handled when they were little fellars and some born like that but i would just work with pup take your time and pet her up good when she comes to you maybe use treats for the reward for coming to you sometimes it takes alot of time to get a timid dog to trust you jmo

A dog that is man made shy can be worked with,try alot of treats when she's on lead and when she comes into you,make it fun for her and she'll eventually forget whatever happened to her. If she is naturally shy from birth,there is no fix that I know of

it just depends on the dog. and the handler. but iv had them to get close then run off the next time i went the dog had a shock collar on and they dont run off. when i call it will come. and if she is shy on the lead it may be were someone would not let her pull them. so they may have slapped her with the lead. then again she may just be plum shy. some dogs are shy it may take a little longer for her to get uses to you. being a little shy is not a bad thing they may not go to strange people that could be good in some situations. just give it a little time the collar has always worked for me. when it come to the dog coming to me when i called for it.

I have been working with her and she is gettin better but her not comin to us makes my fiancée want to sell her. But I talked him out of it because she will be a good dog ya know you just get those you can tell are eager to learn.

I GOT one like that too. IT IS real irritating buy mine is a good hunter also so I wont give up on her. Im hopein the shock collar will do the trick

BEFORE you use an e-collar I would spend about 10-15 minutes a day working the dog on a check cord out in an area away from where the dog is kept. Using treats with this as suggested in an earlier post is okay to start with also. Let the dog wander around and investigate the area you're in for a short time, then give the command (dogs name "COME")" and reel the dog to you (consider a command a directive that you expect to be followed right now, no matter what. You don't have to bark like a drill sergent, but you're not asking a question either). Once the dog gets to you go ahead and give it praise, a treat or both. After a couple sessions like this you need to get in the mind frame of expecting the dog to come directly to you when given the command to come. When it does the praise/treat can be used, and make a big deal about how happy you are with the behavior of returning to you. If it does'nt respond immediately to the command MAKE the dog follow the command by reeling it in with the check cord. If you have to force/make the dog come to you a simple "good dog" once it gets to you should be the only communication with it. Some dogs get it pretty quick, some take more time. If you find yourself getting overly frustrated/angy with the dog during one of these training sessions just go put it away and start over the next day. DO NOT EVER and I mean EVER call the dog to you and then discipline it. This holds for any dog, but especially one that is at all skittish/shy or won't come to you. If it is'nt listening, dragging it back to you by the check cord IS the discipline, which ends upon the dog reaching you.

You will need to keep this training up for how ever long it takes for the dog to condition itself to get to you on the command "come" without needing to be forced to do so. Plan on it taking at least 2 weeks. This will work as long as you are assertive and consistant. The down side is that you will not be able to hunt the dog untill you get to this point. Now you can replace the check cord with the e-collar and start hunting again.

i have always heard on one end of the string there was a mess.
you are starting a bad habbit put the e-collar on it tone it if it
dont come let the crime fit the punishment.

Take the dog out of the pen and put her on a chain; every time you pass her go over and play with her and pet her a lot. She will soon find that, unlike a pen, you can put your hands on her at any time. If you continue to haul her before she has adjusted to letting you catch her at any time; go to your boat goods store and purchase a ten foot length of hollow, plastic ski rope. Cut it into two pieces, burn both ends and tie a good quality snap to one end of each piece. When you go hunting put one of these on the dogs collar and carry the other one in the pickup, incase she loses the other one. This will give you a "handle" that will allow you to catch her much easier in the woods. The ski rope is pretty hard to get"tangled up"in the woods.

Oh yeah, if she is one of those that wants to stay in her dog box every time you want to pet her, after you have her on the chain; gently pull on the chain and call her name and talk sweetly to her until she comes out of the box. When she is out of the box really pet and hug her, let her know you really like her and want to be her buddy. I usually feed my dogs once a day, with a dog like this I would feed her twice or three times a day. Tom
