This is kinda interesting.....

Ever notice that the rule questions that come up the least in real life hunts are the ones that seem to get the most discussion? Example, the silent dog post. It is now up 294 posts!!!! How often do we ever see this rule come up in hunt? I NEVER have. Or the Non-Hunting Dog rule. Now that one I have used once in the past back before it was revised and then it led to a question that went back to the MOH and ended with a handler going out the door swearing the whole club was crooked. But it isn't a rule that comes up two times a year for most of us but here it is up to 4 pages of comments so far.
I guess these seldom seen situations just make the best discussions.

That post is a perfect example of how the internet does not accurately reflect "the who" and "the what" in the sport.

Yes that is quite a discussion going on about the silent dog. This whole issue could be very easily cleared up if this rule included solid parimeters. All this rule needs is a clarification as to what is deemed silent. Currently it is written (intentionally) so that a judge must use his personal experience to make a (judgement call) as to when (HE) thinks a dog is actually silent. People use the word (continous) to argue their point that their dog is not really silent. They then go to Websters dictionary to use their definition as to what continous really means when clarifiying their position.

Now when these rules were developed by our forefathers, they probably didn't go to Websters dictionary before they included the word (continous) in the rules, to define what they considered a silent trailer. This term was probably used to give a dog the benifit of the doubt when it just fell treed once or twice a night. Now our schrewed handlers today say that the dog must be totally silent on track from the first night it went to the woods till the night it went to its grave, to prove their dog is not silent as the term (continous) mean indefinite in websters dictionary.

If we put real teeth in this rule that says if a dog comes treed 3 times in a two hour hunt without first running a track, then that dog should be considered silent on that night and scratched. That way the judge of the cast doesn't have to argue the term (continous) with the handler, he simply has to hold his ground that the dog came treed three times in two hours without first opening on track.

Now that dog may not be totallly silent, but he sure is on the semi-silent to silent side of the scale of how a true hound is supposed to operate when running a coon track.

now we got two post going on about the same subject, I love it. I still say if a dog opens unless you can see him you cant prove where he is, so if you hear him he could be on track or tree so by the rules you must first call strike then tree. may be the coon dropped his binoculars out of his deer stand when down to pick them up and may be thats why the dog opened at the base of the tree. That was the first place he smelled him. lol

i would say these rule questions/debates come up alot cause they are the ones that people disagree about the most. Its hard to disagree with the dog that strikes first gets 100 or the dog stayed till the 5 is up. Most these rules are based on judges judgement thats why they come up so much
