Tight mouth...any idea?

Do any of you guys have experience with tight mouthed dogs? Any ideas why one dog is so tight and another boohoos? What is strange is that my dog is not tight mouthed all the time. I have noticed when it is really really dry out (powdery dirt) he is so tight mouthed that by the time he opens he is on top of the tree. As the night goes on, around 1:00 AM, he loosens up.

I am guessing that it is the quality of the trail. Wetter (dew) helps him pick the scent up better off the ground?

Somebody said he isn't "cold nosed", but I have seen the dog take a slow trail and put a coon up a mile away.

I have also noticed that he is mouthy in a light wind, but if it is dead still...back to quiet.

Any thoughts? At this point I am guessing, the dog is what the dog is, and there is no changing it.

Depending on the dogs age he probably isnt going to change his style. Having said that what you describe is the kind of dog that trees LOTS of coon.

it sounds like tracking conditions are what causes him to open more or less to me .. as far as how much they open don't think theres anything you can do about it, they are what they are when it comes to that

I figured as much. A guy can't expect to know it all, so I appreciate your comments.

I left out an important piece of the puzzle....I trained the dog to be a strike dog. I think this may add to him being a quiet because I am typically dumping him on a "hot" track. What I have learned is that when you take a strike dog in the woods to free cast they act a little funny, I think they expect there to be a track right there. I am guessing this is why guys say that "strike dogs are lazy". I don't think they are lazy, they are just not accustomed to that style of hunting.

You've lost me. How are you defineing "strike dog"? Are you talking about a dog trained to strike off a rig?

TO ME, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR DOG IS JUST USING HIS MOUTH ACCORDING TO WHAT HE'S SMELLING, AND IF YOU LISTEN AND REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO THE COONS HE'S TREEING VS HIS MOUTH AND HOW HE'S USING IT, HE SEEMS LIKE AN EASY DO TO TELL HIS STORY OF WHAT HE'S DOING.

WHEN IT'S DRY LIKE THAT THERE IS VERY LITTLE SCENT FOR HIM TO SMELL AND TRAIL ON SO HE'S BARKING LESS BECAUSE HE'S HAVING TO WORK HARDER TO FIND THE TRAIL. AROUND HERE USUALLY AROUND MIDNIGHT - 3AM IS WHEN THE DEW FALLS, AND THAT IS PROBABLY WHAT IS HAPPENING AND FRESHENING UP HIS TRACKS ENOUGH TO WHERE HE'S GIVING MORE MOUTH.

COLD NOSED AND STILL MOUTHED ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT PHRASES. HE SOUNDS LIKE A DOG THAT CAN DO IT ALL FROM COLD, TO HOT, TO LAY UPS JUST BY THE WAY YOU ARE DESCRIBING HIM TRAILING.

THE REASON HE'S MOUTHY IN A LIGHT WIND IS HE IS WINDING. I BET IN LIGHT WIND HE RUNS WITH HIS HEAD IN THE AIR ALOT TOO. HE CAN SMELL IT GOOD THEN. AND IT'S PROBABLY LAY UP COONS HES TREEING THEN.

IF YOU HAVE TRAINED HIM TO BE A "STRIKE DOG" (WHAT I CONSIDER A DOG ON THE RIG STRIKING COONS) THEN HE IS USED TO USING HIS NOSE TO WIND THE TRACKS, NOT RUN ACROSS THEM.

HE'S JUST SIMPLY USING WHAT YOU'VE TAUGHT HIM TO DO. BARK WHEN HE SMELLS THE TRACK, WETHER IT'S ON THE GROUND OR IN THE AIR, AND NOT IF HE DOESNT. WHICH EXPLAINS THE QUIET MOUTH ON STILL NIGHTS, THERE IS NO WIND TO CARRY THE SCENT FOR HIM TO SMELL.

my female is very tight ,Ive only heard open on very hot tracks. Meaning We've seen the coon and 5-10 mins later let her run it.
Other than that if she opens she is treed.

Good luck

Jim

Yeah, he strikes out of the rig. I have a "double" attached to the box. I live in the Northeast, we don't have a lot of coon. Rigging increases my odds a bit.

It sounds like you have been in this game for a long time, and that you have had a dog like this before?

You are dead on about when he is winding off the truck. I have seen him almost stand on his hind legs with his neck stretched out towards the sky.

Most times (99%) when I cut him when he strikes, he will run about 40 yards up the road, come back and go past me 40 yards down the road the other way. then run past me again 40 yards and on his way back he makes the decision which side of the road to take. (This can be a little hair raising when a car approaches, but he gets it right)

Every time he trees I think about what he did, where the track went, conditions, etc and try to figure out how his head works. Like I said earlier, sounds like you have a lot of experience.

Tight Mouthed

I have an 11 month old walker male that is about as tight as you can get. He is an honest strike dog and a quick strike dog but usually keeps his head shut! If he opens 3-5 times on track you better be gettin' ready to tree him. I hunt with a guy that is older than me and been huntin' since he was a kid. He said that a dog that is tight mouthed like that will usually be more accurate and tree more coons. CTK's Honky Tonk TUFF is my dogs name he is breezin' along to a NiteCh. Been in 2 UKC Hunts, he placed 1st and 3rd. Hopefully finish him this weekend. In 10 nights he has been under 21 trees. Had 19 coons and one den. The pup is an absolute COON DAWG! The guys theory is holdin' true with the accuracy.
