Sq hunt rule question

I could have sworn I have read this somewhere, but I did not see it in the UKC rules (might be NKC or PKC). Here's the situation.

Handler tells you his dog might leave a declared tree to meet him before cast arrives at tree. How far can the dog go before minused or can he leave at all. If dog can leave, can it be told "get back"(I say no).

Just curious. Thanks for any help

Im no expert, but I say you can't coach your dog to do anything. To me telling your dog to get back on the tree is handling your dog. You can't handle your dog until after waiting the 2 minute required tree time.

I reckon it might depend on which Kennel Club rules you are hunting under. There are some very strict on a dog leaving a tree for any reason, others are more tolerant. I would train him to stay put. It is not hard to do.

It is in the UKC rules. Judges discretion.Dog must go back to tree immediately and tree satisfactorily. You cannot encourage the dog.

14. GENERAL INFORMATION:

No points, not even circle points, will be awarded when dogs return to tree that had previously been scored, cast may go to tree without dogs being declared treed, if majority of cast agree, when hunting Judges are used. When a dog is declared treed, Judge is not to let anyone go to the tree in less than two minutes unless all dogs have been declared treed. This is a courtesy to other handlers and also to see that a dog will hold his tree. Dog must hold the tree for two minutes, unless all dogs in cast are declared treed. If one dog in cast, or one dog remaining in cast, dog must hold tree for two minutes. Dogs declared treed within hunting time are eligible for scoring. When a dog is declared treed, after two minutes has elapsed no additional dog can be declared treed at that particular tree. When two minutes are up, cast can go directly to tree. Dogs at tree must be leashed. No encouragement or discouragement of any kind to dogs. No pulling of vines nor any action deemed to be interfering with dog(s) to be done when other dogs are declared treed.

If dog is declared treed on tree not containing squirrel but containing tree game, points to be deleted. Tree game is defined as any game capable of climbing a tree. Dog should not be minused tree points if he comes back a short distance to meet handler if dog goes back in and trees satisfactorily. Judge should be informed of such peculiarities before hunt Three spectators per handler will be allowed on all casts. Handler’s dog(s) will be scratched for rule violations by their spectators. ALL HUNTERS, JUDGES, AND/OR GUIDES MUST BE DRAWN PUBLICLY FOR THEIR CAST. Owners having multiple entries will have dogs drawn to separate casts if possible.

Thanks Mountainman. I knew I wasn't dreaming that up. What, as a judge would be considered a reasonable distance? More than 15 steps, 30 steps? If dog goes back to tree without being coached score accordingly, but IMO "judges diescretion" can cause lots of problems on a cast.

If a called dog heard the group coming, it might go up to 50,75 yards when it hears the cast coming. It aint my dog but a buddies young dog that gets back when told. I knew there was a rule reguarding this situation and got curious. Thanks and good hunting.

All judges are different. Whats a little ways for some is a long ways for others. I had a judge minused mine time because she took her feet off the tree and spun around in her same tracks and put her feet right back on the tree.
You would just have to clarify too far with whatever judge happens to be there at the time.
I had a gyp one time that would tree a coon and as soon as she saw your light she would come to you, even if it was 300 yards, she would come and put her paws on your leg and then go right back to the tree and never move. It didn't bother me because I was pleasure hunting, but it would bother some. haha

A guy told me ON A SQUIRREL HUNT. NKC is a 30 ft. circle, PKC 10 ft. circle of the tree. If a dog leaves out of that circle the dog will be scratched. Now on UKC I have'nt heard...

1okiesawyers you better read the rule agan on distance from the tree. The squirrel can be 30 {NKC} paces from the tree the dog is treeing and in UKC the ssquirrel can only be 15 paces from the tree. You are reading something ino the rules that isn't there.

No you need to read my post again, I said, ( a guy told me.. ) I didn't say I read that.. Cause I have never read the rules.. You are reading something in my post that's not there as well !!!!!
But thanks for clearing up the miss understanding... But it still don't matter if the dog is 30 ft. or the squirrel is 30ft. from the tree the dog is treeing on, it's still 30 ft. circle.. If you swap the dog and the squirrel it's still 30ft.
