I am from Aiken, SC~horse country~coyotes (that were planted here to "save" them) have begun killing deer in numbers around here. No more birds to hunt or rabbit. People laugh, but I NEVER let my small house dogs out after dark with out being on a lead. My hounds are all kenneled.
There are fox hunters who will pay ~during trapping season, of course~ for coyotes to run their hounds.
I am guessing they would change their minds about that if they were trapping wolves for the hounds to chase.
That is horrible.
What can be done for the best of both worlds? We can't undo what has been done!

Do you think that one day the fish and game folks will see that selling wolf hunting licenses will be a good revenue source? I can imagine that the $$ signs will eventually open that up. What would some of you be willing to pay to shoot one of these suckers?
I don't think that will be a good answer but isn't that the way things work, if it can make money off us then they will allow it.
I don't see that they will go back to putting any bounties out for them, coyotes either. State gov'ts aren't ready to toss away dollars on a program that makes sense.
It is hard to see so much good elk meat just lay there to spoil or be eaten by the scavengers. How much is this cutting into the numbers of tags available for elk hunting out west?
As a farmer myself I HATE to see the livestock destruction. We have wolves close to here and I have livestock and hounds and DO NOT want any of the problems these animals bring. I think it would be wise to have a season for wolves to keep them in check and install a little human fear factor with them.

I am a hunter and I believe in hunting an animal and I believe in respecting that animal. The way I see it is the coyote population is going to have to be taken down some. I don't know about wolves because I live in Ohio, but the coyote population for the past year as been at its worst. My buddy lost a good hound to coyotes who attacked the dog while treed and killed the pup as well this was before we started carrying rifles. My dogs are kenneled up off the ground, my daughter's house dog is not out by himself and everything is monitored. The coyotes raid the cattle farm down the road and calves have to be penned up at night because of attacks. Last year I was with my daughter hunting and we had a younger hound with us just learning the woods when coyotes came in on us and I had to shoot the rifle because season was in twice just to get their attention and a third time to send them packing, luckily the hound was on a lead at the time.
I know here in WI they are getting pretty bad, too. A buddy of mine got his dog killed this year bear hunting. He took pictures of it and there was not much left of the dog. What he did was show everyone he saw - hunter or not- the pictures to show them what the wolves are really doing. It seemed to get a lot more attention that way. We just need to keep fighting these and get a season on them.
