Judges authority (shining trees)
Ive had this come up a couple times, and always bullied my way through when judging.
Dogs are split treed a few yards apart. Easy to run shining time together if the trees are in fact split and not grown together, but 1 handler objects to shining before his minute is up.
I have always let them have there minute, then decided if it was a split tree or not as soon as it was over. Starting the 2nd shine time a minute later if it is.It brings up an interesting point though.
Can a tree be shined by a judge before the shining times started?
What does a handler even have to shine untill a decision is made on what the limits of that "tree" are.
Sure its a scratching offence if a handler or spectator does it, but does a judges authority allow it when it effects a decision he has to make?

When a judge throws his light up there to see how those trees should be scored, together or split, he isn't looking for the coon, he is just looking to see if the two trees should be scored as one or as splits. You only start the shinetime when you are in postion to score the coon. Two different things.
I usually get the cast together and inform them that the juidges light is going up to make a determination and invite all cast members to take the same look. But two trees or one is a decision for the judge to make. That's how I do it.
Once a judge has announced that the splits will be scored as one and shine time begins and it is obveous that the sappling the judges dog is on is slick and without an escape route can a handler ask for a cast vote on scoring as one tree?
My feeling is that the cast vote should take placed BEFORE you shine the tree. That is why I want everyone to gather round and take the same look the judge is taking. He announces how it will be scored, you don't agree, ask for a cast vote.
I don't think you can ever change the determination after the shing starts. That is just my opinion.
Jim if all judges were like you that would work, but i never put my light up before permission is given to shine and then its to late to question?
John, I'm usually not the judge but I'm always the guy saying you gotta tell me how this is gonna be scored BEFORE we shine anything. Every handler has the right to know.
i dont know Jim,17. says 1st dog treed gets the first 2 min.
if trees are that close how would you shine a1/3 of one
and not the other?

To my mind, shining to determine how a tree should be scored is not shining to score the tree. Two different things. Shining to determine how the tree will be scored is solely up to the judge.
