how long should it take to learn the rules?

i've been in two ukc hunts. one was a buddy hunt at my local club where we used ukc rules and scorecard but it wasn't for ukc points, and the other was a nitech cast with a b&t i had just bought. in both of these hunts i called my dog struck when he was struck, and treed when he was treed. in two hunts there was only one obvious slick, and no off game at all. i feel i had a good hound both times, not necessarily the best, but i got my butt kicked because of all these little things that everyone else took for granted, that i had no idea about. i've read the rules and competed as best i could, but walked away feeling like and idiot. should i just keep plugging away at it, hoping to get better with experience, or just hang it up because i could never hope to compete with these guys that have been doing it for years and years.

after a couple hunts. i alway read the rule book when i'm sittin on the pot. after you read it a couple times stuff realy starts to sink in

Don't give up, what I would suggest to do is walk along on some casts and pay attention. Always remember the best dog don't always win.

read and hunt and don't give up.Don't give in to trying something you've seen the "big guys" do either.If you hunt your dog hard and know his EVERY little move,if he is the right kind the winning will come.If he is doing his best and you are doing your best and you start coming away getting beat by better dogs and not better handlers don't be affraid to look for another dog,instaed of crying about loosing.I have met many good people all over the U.S. through nite hunts.You'll meet all types,cheats,honest folks,pleasure hunters,very competitive people,hard hunters,cry babies.I have always loved Jerry Molls internet signature"The will to win is not nearly important as the will to prepare to win."Live by that motto and you'll do OK.I'll give you an example of knowing your dogs every move,I was in an open registered cast,the dogs were in a swamp and having a terrible time with this track.We had already made a few trees and the other handlers"knew" my dogs locate(it was easy).He gave two dying quivering bawls and started hammering this tree.They are all looking at me,and I said nothing.The other dogs came into him about 2 minutes later and all three handlers pounced on it and I said,"Now I can take fourth on that possum."Walked over and sure enough was a grinner.They all turned to me and said,How did ya know? I told em I'd tell 'em but then I'd have to kill 'em.After the hunt a buddy of mine who was spectating the cast came and asked me again and I told him,two bawls instead of three.He laughed and said your good.But thats what I mean by knowing your dog.Good luck and remember Jerry's quote.

The reason I hunt this bloodlines is a quote an old friend gave me,"Your either making dust or your eating it."

The rules change ever cast and no 2 cast are ever the same but knowing the rules is the number 1 option, lack of experiece is a killer.

Stick with it and don't give up. Keep reviewing the rules. I also like the idea of going on a cast as a spectator and kind of play along. I don't always agree then but it is still fun without the pressure of trying to do it just right. Some people are better handlers but this is a sport and like all sports you will get better with more experience and most don't naturally do it. there can be a lot of strategy involved. I have gone as a spectator before and then as we moved from one spot to another the guy i was with shared some of his strategy with me. I also like to hunt with friends and pretend we are in a cast and call our dogs when pleasuring hunting. Don't usually write the score down but I am sure at least on of us are keeping it in our head. Keep your chin up and good luck.

i bought an eight week old blue tick 18 months ago i had coon hounds but had never trained on or even competion hunted before. are first hunt was last years bluetick days with almost two hundred dogs. the first night i ended with plus points the next night i minused out. since then we have place 2nd at three hunts and a 3rd at another we won some performance pooints and i still am baffeled at some of the rules i guess by tellin my story i'm tellin you to stick with it. it get alot more enjoyable when you feel confident in the rules and in your hound good luck jay dengg

time to learn rules

i'd say 2 hrs is how long it takes to learn the rules. thats the time of one night hunt. after you get schooled, you will know them before you go back again. and we thought slick willie was bill clinton? nah..its the handler who knows you don't know the rules.....class is in session.
