Explaining Coonhounds and Coon Hunters.

Multifaceted is a word I like to use to explain Coonhounds and Coon Hunters. There is really no right way or a wrong way of training a hound or being a Coon Hunter. Until you put a definition to what you want to accomplish. You have to define what you want to accomplish and they set out to do so. That then defines what is right and what is wrong. If you want to be at the top level of the sport you have to narrow what you accept from a hound and that may take some or most of the fun out of it. If you just want to go and have fun and be around hounds then do it and take what happens as a learning experience and realize it may not be the best thing to do, trying to make a quality hound.
Young Men and Women starting out generally need to have fun to stay focused and that means usually dogs are handled wrong, unless they grew up with parents that set a foundation of training to hounds. I find most haven't been that lucky so fun is what counts and the first few years of owning a hound are geared toward their learning and the hounds ability may never reach its peak. That really doesn't matter because people are enjoying what they want to do.
Just like breeding. So many methods and choices to make.
So many breeds and so many styles. Coon Hunting has so many paths for one to take it is amazing. But we have to remember even on a different path we need to be respectful and thoughtful of someone that wants in the joy of owning and training their hound.
