Game Hunting in America is Beneficial
"Encouragement of a proper hunting spirit, a proper love of sport, instead of being incompatible with a love of nature and wild things, offers the best guaranty for the preservation of wild things."
--Theodore Roosevelt, U.S. President,
Nobel Peace Prize Winner, NRA Life Member
President Theodore Roosevelt said that being involved in nature and hunting is a better way of preserving wildlife than ignoring it. This means that responsible hunting is beneficial to the environment, even more so than abstinence from hunting. I support this quote because I believe that hunting is a vital part in preserving our wildlife so that are children and grandchildren can enjoy it.
There are different types of “hunters.” Poachers, irresponsible hunters, and the responsible hunters are different types of hunters. Poachers are those who kill game animals illegally and without permission of the landowner. Irresponsible hunters are those who go out and kill animals without regards for managing the wildlife. Responsible hunters, on the other hand, care about the wildlife and harvest only the amount needed for one’s family and the amount that is legal. This paper will deal strictly with responsible hunters because the other two types do not adhere to set laws.
Unbeknownst to some, the efforts of hunters have restored game populations and habitats, as stated by the NRA. The NRA says that hunters have provided 4 billion dollars through the Pittman-Robertson Act since 1937for the preservation of wildlife. The Pittman-Robertson Act puts a 10% tax on firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, and handguns. Money gained through this act is placed in a trust fund for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for wildlife restoration projects. In addition to the Pittman-Robertson Act, $300 million dollars each year is donated to clubs and organizations for wildlife conservation (NRA). Hunters are also a necessity in the income of state conservation agencies, providing almost 75% of the annual income for state conservation agencies (NRA). Benefit aspects in America other than wildlife conservation, hunting generates 575,000 jobs in the U.S. and the money taken in from hunters could pay the annual salaries of 100,000 U.S. Army troops (NSSF). If these numbers to not prove that hunting is beneficial I do not know what will!
Besides the numbers and facts, hunting is plays a significant role in the U.S. Most of the support of wildlife management and conservation come from hunters providing direct assistance to conservation agencies (NRA). Also, there are programs designed for hunters to give harvested game to the hungry. Some such programs are Hunters Sharing the Harvest and Hunters for the Hungry. Finally, hunting helps in reducing the amount of automobile related game animal deaths 0061nd helps manage the animal population so there are not too many (NRA). Overall, hunting is vital to America.
Hunting does apply to everyone and not just hunters. It has been noted that is creates jobs in the U.S., so, unknowingly one’s job may have been created by hunting. Also, the money gained from taxes paid by hunters helps to preserve wildlife. Hunting feeds the hungry as well, verifying that hunting is beneficial to the community.
If one wishes for their children and grandchildren to experience the wonders of nature they should support hunting, as it is vital in conservation efforts. A considerable amount of jobs are created from the hunting industry. For the benefit of society and wildlife please support hunting in America.
