Rabbits and Starting pens
2 questions.....
1st - Does anyone have a suggestion for a type of rabbit that matches more the large running and stamina of the Hare
2nd - I am looking for starting/running pens with 100 miles of Kalamazoo Michigan.....any suggestions.....
Reason - I raise a rare breed from Germany called the Wachtelhund.....they are a versatile dog and a flusher by trade.....On of the German testing requirements is that that they must run a rabbit (or is it a hare) minimum 200 meters (to at least receive a score) or maximum 1500 meters (to receive the top score).... The problem here in the states is that we do not have access to the type of rabbit that is there (7-9 pounds) at least not in all areas....our breed club just met the other weekend and are trying to figure out an alternative to this (another animal that is accessible to the whole nation and will run that far)...we are kind of stuck....cottontails like to hole up...at least from what I have seen and seemed to be quite illusive (heavy predation).....Would a pen raised rabbit, raised under the right conditions, run that far and provide the dogs with a good track possibility???
Input, suggestions, and Ideas would greatly be appreciated....
FYI...for those that are wondering...the wachtelhund is about the size of a springer....is used in Germany to run boar and deer....and gives tongue on trail...much like the hounds...you can read about them here...if you like:
