Trump Sweating: New York Prosecutors Hire Forensic Financial Experts on Case

The current best theory is that Donald Trump will pardon himself. Some of us with fairly sophisticated legal training at good schools believe that a self-pardon is an illegal or can be nullified. The very word “pardon” implies giving it to someone else. Moreover, there would be real legal arguments that there is no such thing as a self-pardon given the entire reason the founders provided the power in the first place.

But given the fact that there is at least the possibility that Trump’s federal pardon could work, the pressure on the New York state prosecutors builds with each day. Someone, somewhere, will need to look into the relationship with Russia and it should start with the money. Even though many of us are not all that wild about states prosecuting presidents or former presidents (imagine what Arkansas might do to Obama), if there is going to be a state prosecution it had best come from a big state with big legitimacy. New York will work. New York can look into financial relationships with Russia through Deutsche Bank.

And that sounds like that’s exactly what they’re doing. According to the Washington Post:

ADVERTISING

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has retained forensic accounting specialists to aid its criminal investigation of President Trump and his business operations, as prosecutors ramp up their scrutiny of his company’s real estate transactions, according to people familiar with the matter.

>District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. opened the investigation in 2018 to examine alleged hush-money payments made to two women who, during Trump’s first presidential campaign, claimed to have had affairs with him years earlier. The probe has since expanded, and now includes the Trump Organization’s activities more broadly, said the people familiar with the matter.

Now, this would be less of a big deal were it not for the fact that the Manhattan D.A. surely has its own specialists in financial crimes, who are very good and very experienced, including rather sophisticated accounting crimes. But in this particular prosecution, the Manhattan D.A. is taking on the [significant] expense of hiring people that do this for a living for America’s biggest corporations. At the highest court level, some mistakes can cost billions. These people find mistakes and make sure they’re not made.

Because Donald Trump may have trusted people like Deutsche Bank and his own accounting firm to ensure that mistakes are hard to find, it makes sense that the Manhattan D.A. would go “next-level” if they’re now interested in getting to the root of the Deutsche Bank, Trump, and possible mob (Russian) axis.

And that will make a guy sweat if he’s specialized in criminality for years. Trumps knows he days as free man are numbered if something is not done and he is removed from office.

Donald Trump, current president of the United States, has been accused of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, including non-consensual kissing or groping, by at least 25 women since the 1970s.[1][2] The accusations have resulted in three instances of litigation: his then-wife Ivana made a rape claim during their 1989 divorce litigation but later recanted that claim;[3] businesswoman Jill Harth sued Trump in 1997 alleging breach of contract while also suing for sexual harassment but agreed to forfeit her sexual harassment claim as part of a settlement she received relating to the former suit; and, in 2017, former The Apprentice contestant Summer Zervos filed a defamation lawsuit after Trump accused her of lying about her sexual misconduct allegations against him.[4]

Two of the allegations (by Ivana Trump and Jill Harth) became public before Trump's candidacy for president, but the rest arose after a 2005 audio recording was leaked during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump was recorded bragging that a celebrity like himself "can do anything" to women, including "just start kissing them ... I don't even wait" and "grab 'em by the pussy". Trump subsequently characterized those comments as "locker room talk" and denied actually behaving that way toward women, and he also apologized for the crude language. Many of his accusers stated that Trump's denials provoked them into going public with their allegations.

Another type of accusation was made, primarily after the audio recording surfaced, by several former Miss USA and Miss Teen USA contestants, who accused Trump of entering the dressing rooms of beauty pageant contestants. Trump, who owned the Miss Universe franchise, which includes both pageants, was accused of going into dressing rooms in 1997, 2000, 2001, and 2006, while contestants were in various stages of undress. Trump had already referred to this practice during a 2005 interview on The Howard Stern Show, saying he could "get away with things like that" because he owned the beauty pageants the women and girls were competing in.

Trump has denied all the allegations against him, saying he has been the victim of media bias, conspiracies, and a political smear campaign.[5][6][7][8] In October 2016, Trump publicly vowed to sue all the women who have made allegations of sexual misconduct against him, as well as The New York Times for publishing the allegations,[9][10] but he has yet to follow through with any legal action.[11][12]

In June 2019, writer E. Jean Carroll alleged in New York magazine that Trump raped her in a department store dressing room in 1995 or 1996. Two friends of Carroll confirmed to the magazine that Carroll had previously confided in them in regard to the incident. Trump denied ever meeting Carroll, although New York had published a photo of Trump and Carroll together in 1987.[13][14][15] In October 2019, the book All the President's Women: Donald Trump and the Making of a Predator,[a] by Barry Levine and Monique El-Faizy was published, containing 43 additional allegations of sexual misconduct against Trump.[16][17]

President Donald Trump on Saturday downplayed a massive cyberattack on US federal government agencies, contradicting Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's public remarks linking the hack to Russia and leaving administration officials scrambling to reconcile the competing statements, according to people familiar with the matter.

"This was a very significant effort, and I think it's the case that now we can say pretty clearly that it was the Russians that engaged in this activity," Pompeo had said of the cyber hack in an interview Friday on "The Mark Levin Show," adding: "I can't say much more as we're still unpacking precisely what it is, and I'm sure some of it will remain classified."
But Trump, in his first public comments on the issue, appeared to undercut Pompeo's remarks in a pair of tweets Saturday, suggesting without evidence "it may be China" that's responsible. Instead of condemning the attack, or Russia, he wrote that he had been "fully briefed and everything is well under control" -- despite officials in his administration having said this week that the cyberattack "poses a grave risk" to networks across both the public and private sector.
White House officials had drafted a statement assigning blame to Russia for the attack and were preparing to release it Friday afternoon but were told to stand down, according to people familiar with the plans. Officials initially weren't told why the statement was pulled back.

Early signs of a US government hack emerged months ago but were inconclusive
The statement, the people said, placed blame on Russia for orchestrating the attack but left open the possibility that other actors were involved.
The people familiar told CNN on Saturday it wasn't clear whether the statement will be released, and instead described a scramble inside the administration as officials work to reconcile the competing statements from Trump and Pompeo.
The President was briefed on the attack on Thursday.
Trump also baselessly claimed in the tweets that the attack could have impacted US voting machines. A group of national, state and private election officials said in a joint statement last month that there is no evidence of any voting system being compromised in the 2020 election.
At least half a dozen federal agencies are now known to have been targeted in the breach, including the Department of Homeland Security's cyber arm and the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy and State. Investigators are still trying to determine what, if any, government data may have been accessed or stolen in the hack.
"Suffice it to say, there was a significant effort to use a piece of third-party software to essentially embed code inside of US government systems and it now appears systems of private companies and companies and governments across the world as well," Pompeo said.
Trump had remained silent on the hack for most of the week. The White House said Friday the President was being briefed and "working very hard" in dealing with it.
Asked Friday about Trump's silence on the matter, Pompeo noted there was work going on behind the scenes.
"There are many things that you'd very much love to say, 'Boy, I'm going to call that out,' but a wiser course of action to protect the American people is to calmly go about your business and defend freedom," he said.

As the scope of the espionage campaign and its sophistication became clearer over the past two weeks, US officials had begun to believe that a Russia-linked entity or Russian individuals are responsible for the attacks. Pompeo's comments go further than any Trump administration official yet in pinning the blame on Russia, as further evidence shows the hacking operation bears all the hallmarks of a Russian-backed actor.
The Russian embassy in Washington has denied involvement in the hack.
But Moscow has been linked to several recent breaches, including the 2016 hacking of Democratic officials during the US presidential election.
Last week, the cybersecurity firm FireEye disclosed that it had been targeted by a sophisticated, likely state-sponsored espionage attempt, and that several of its own hacking tools had been stolen.

Coronavirus response shows Donald Trump's failure of leadership
Our View: Trump administration is 'not going to control the pandemic,' sentencing America to a hellish winter of more deaths and economic suffering. Trump and the Republican party will pay for his failure to the American people.

The Editorial Board USA TODAY
Early in his fight against a novel coronavirus, Donald Trump proclaimed himself in a call-to-arms moment a "wartime president."

But as a third surge of COVID-19 infections sweeps across the country, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows capitulated on Trump's behalf. "We are not going to control the pandemic," he told CNN last Sunday.

Beyond consigning Americans to a wretched winter of sickness before a vaccine becomes widely available, surrendering in the face of a viral enemy is a tragically fitting capstone to perhaps the worst crisis-management performance for a president in U.S. history.

Among highest COVID-19 death rates
The United States has faced plenty of dark moments. The Civil War. The Great Depression. Pearl Harbor. The 9/11 attacks. Throughout it all, there was never contemplation of just giving up, or tossing the problem to states and localities, or trying to wish the problem away. Not until now.

With Election Day fast approaching, voters have a right to ask why the virus hasn't been better controlled. The pandemic was always going to be bad, regardless of who occupied the White House, but it didn't have to be this bad: All but four of the world's countries have lower COVID-19 death rates (measured in fatalities per 100,000 residents) than the United States.

South Korea, which saw its first infection almost the same day as America did, has more than 26,000 confirmed infections; the United States has nearly 9 million cases.

"Unfortunately for us," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, "the United States is clearly the worst hit country in the world."

Anniversary of 1st COVID-19 death
With 4% of the global population, the USA accounts for 20% of COVID-19 deaths — nearly 230,000.

Projections are that by Feb. 6, anniversary of the first reported U.S. death from the virus, the toll could exceed 400,000 and match the number of Americans lost in four years of World War II.

Protesters in front of the White House on Oct. 8, 2020.
Mistakes and mishandling unfolded by seasons:

►Winter. From the beginning, Trump deceived Americans about the coronavirus. In late January, a top adviser warned him that it would be "the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency." In early February, the president told journalist Bob Woodward in a taped interview that he understood the fierce lethality and contagiousness of the virus ("more deadly than your strenuous flus"). Yet the president lied to the public about the potential severity, claiming he didn't want to spark a panic, when that information could have helped people prepare. More likely, Trump didn't want to upset a stock market he relies upon as an economic barometer.

Trump issued restrictions on travel from China on Jan. 31, after 45 other countries did the same. The partial ban could have helped contain the spread, but it became lost in a cascade of other incompetent decisions. For weeks, he resisted advice to ban travel from Europe, from where strains of the virus generated a deadly New York outbreak. Federal agencies botched the creation of a coronavirus test and then severely restricted its use, leaving health experts flying blind through a mushrooming crisis.

February was largely squandered as the president played golf, attended a Super Bowl party and held rallies while the virus silently infected thousands in the United States.

Through it all, he ignored a playbook left by previous administrations with step-by-step guidance on how to act urgently, with a unified voice and sweeping powers to quell a pandemic.

►Spring. Even as the pandemic spread, the president refused to wear a mask; peddled phony cures (a Cornell study found Trump the leading disseminator of false information about COVID-19); and lost patience with slow-the-spread restrictions, agitating against states ("LIBERATE MICHIGAN!") that followed his own administration's health guidelines.

Trump proclaimed ultimate power for directing pandemic relief and then quickly abandoned that responsibility to the states. He was too timid about implementing the Defense Production Act to ensure a steady stream of necessary supplies, a deficit that still haunts hospitals to this day. And he rejected a federal role in tracing and isolating infections, a respected and time-honored health mitigation tool that other nations used to stem the virus.

►Summer. Trump's prediction that the virus would go away in the warm weather proved false, as new surges hit the South and West. His administration undermined public health agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sidelined CDC's scientists, and blocked top government experts from communicating with the American people through the national news media.

►Fall. As Trump has barnstormed across battleground states in recent weeks — leaving clusters of new infections in his wake from campaign rallies where social distancing and mask wearing were frequently ignored — dueling storylines have emerged. One is the president's relentless assertion that the nation is "rounding the turn" on defeating COVID-19. The other is the direct opposite: that an America beset by what are now record high daily infections and rising numbers of hospitalizations and deaths is entering a third viral surge.

Saving both Americans and economy
One of Trump's greatest mistakes throughout the crisis was failing to grasp that the economy could not be saved without first saving Americans from the risk of serious illness. The president presented it as a binary choice. By contrast, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden recognizes that "to fix the economy, we have to get control over the virus."

So far, the best part of the federal response has been Operation Warp Speed, which appears to be on track to start delivering millions of doses of a vaccine early next year, if ongoing trials show one or more to be safe and effective. Yet, even here, Trump's meddling and pressure on regulators have undermined public confidence in vaccines.

The coronavirus presented Trump with a historic test. To give him a second term, after hundreds of thousands of Americans lost their lives, would be to reward a failure of leadership.

This is the fourth in a series of editorials about major issues in the 2020 presidential election. Previous editorials covered climate change, health care and foreign policy.

You can be treated for mental illness through Obamacare as Trump did not repeal and replace, kind like Mexico paying for the wall. Now I see why they Republicans are the poorly educated, Trumps reading level.

Beyond consigning Americans to a wretched winter of sickness before a vaccine becomes widely available, surrendering in the face of a viral enemy is a tragically fitting capstone to perhaps the worst crisis-management

Wouldn't it be more sensible for Russia to stand behind Hillary? After all, she sold 25% of America's Uranium to them as Secretary of State? But millions was spent, Mueller's report, nothing... spying.. you all hated him before he even took office.. common sense tells you that... But what an oxymoron.. DEMORATS and common sense in tbe same sentence...
