Ol Frito is a Reproducer throwing his genes into his pups. I tell you a persons crazy not to breed their quality females to him.

Last week one night I heard Frito come treed out in a partially wooded pasture. Sounded a little odd and the situation made more sense when I got to where he was treed. I popped the hood on a about a '40 international pickup in the weeds and this is what I saw:
I let the hood back down and said to Frito, "Plus 'em!"
LOL- That was great. unusual but great...

Next year's project
Boone (Ann x Frito, born July 2011)
A big boned, friendly, nicely colored, loud, bold pup. He has that no-fear attitude of his sire and does everything with a 100% level of effort. I couldn't be happier with what I perceive in this one at this point. (Of course they change a lot as they mature and we all know they're all wonderful as pups. )

pup
good looking pup there.
Boone and Frito. Frito has started all of his pups I've kept. The only thing about this is to make sure the pup is big enough to keep up with a fast dog. Frito's also an extreme tree dog which seems to work well with his pups, but they need to be mature enough to realize his power is directed at the coon and not the pup.
He's starting early with Boone.
Thats a kodak moment.

ol copper is realy turning it on.. things are comming ez to him. i can't get over how much he acts like his momma. its like hunting her all over again with fritos mouth... the thing that realy impresses me is how he won't mess around much on a bad spot on a track that he is having trouble with. he wil make some slashes around the area, and if he can't figure it out he packs up and heads out. i have done nothing to influance this behavior. it is all natural. some might not like that trait, but i cant stand for one to stand on his head and turn leaves over. if they can't handle it get a move on, and that is what he does..
... he did a real nice job tonight on the frost....this sucker is going to make a nice hound. infact he already is...he is also doing everything on his own with no help.been just taking him alone...ol copper absolutly hates them coons and every good one i have had was like that.. they just hated those buggers..i am having alot of fun with this youngster.. he is a dandy

The fall colors are spectacular this November!
Hunting has been awsome and the weather nice. A couple more days and I'll be out of the woods for the next 7-10 days in order to let the water bodies freeze over. There's already thin ice on the protected spots. I' ve never lost a dog through the ice and never want it to happen.
Frito's not a super scorecard dog but wow to see the speed of him pegging coon after coon by himself with seldom a miss however far he needs to run the hills, hollers and swamps (I have the whole mix of terrain in one area) makes being alive under a fall moon very special.
sloopy
Rick,
Ol Sloopy put on another show for us last nite!! Cast Sloop and two hounds on a nice sized old creek bed, the other two hounds pulled off to our right about 200 yards and got treed, Sloop payed them no mind, and went almost to the end of the creek bed and got hooked on a tree of her own. Sloop had a monster, the other two where slick. That kinda thing makes those far walks a little easier to do. lol. We treed 5 on the nite, 3 being to sloop all by her lonesome. She was definitly miss independent last nite. She had a nice warm ride home in the cab with me with the heater blasted.

That’s ice floating on the water.
After getting himself totally beat up by this coon, and dunked face first into the stinking mud at the bottom of the swamp, I separated him from the coon while he still had a little dignity left and sent him after this coon again. He managed to tree it nearby. What a sight; head covered in swamp mud.
It was a real mess cleaning him up back at the rig and putting antiseptic on his wounds. The coon got him real good and he'll have scars to show. Charlie's going to have to work on his reflexes if he's going to keep a clean face like his dad.
If that hard whooping in ice water doesn’t break him off coons nothing will. Lol.

The north woods hill and lake country is in process of freezing over and until it is frozen solid I won’t risk hunting it. So, I switched to hunting the MO river bottoms below Bismarck. This country was under 4-8 feet of water, and in some places much more, all summer, which destroyed the habitat. Many of the trees blew down in storms due to saturated soils, and the kitten coon crop, and I suppose most all small game animals, died in the high water. Still, I’ve been giving this river valley a try.
Sunday night…
I cut Frito along a 2-mile long, deep-water, oxbox creek that is connected at both its ends to the river channel. Thankfully, he didn’t swim across the oxbow because there is no access to about a 1000 acres of what is now swamp land between the oxbow and main river channel. Frito followed the old, sandy river bank running along the oxbow. This bank has virtually all of the remaining old growth cottonwoods on my stretch of the river. It was windy, so all I could do was watch the Garmin and cross my fingers he didn’t get into some place I couldn’t reach. Right when the Garmin said 1.0 mile, it showed he was treed. In past years, it was highly unusual to go that deep in the old growth trees to find a track but the flood apparently did its job on the coon population. It’s mandatory to see a coon when you walk that far to a tree and this time was no exception. “Good job, Frito. Let’s leave him for seed.”
Last night…
I loaded Super Charlie and we went further up the river hoping to get into better ground. The high water marks on the trees showed the water was over my head in this area; so it was hit hard too. Same deal, Frito’s pup left alone in the blink of an eye and never looked back. With the Garmin marking off the distance as he sank into the timber I started to get a little uneasy with each additional hundred-yard increment because each step took him deeper into the valley where I knew there’d be a lot of standing water, mud flats and many toppled trees.
It sounded really good to me when he finally opened on a cold track at about 700 yards up river from me, and I thought maybe we’d get lucky and the coon would tree quickly before going out across the lower areas closer to the river, but no. He worked that track down and across mud flats and areas of backwater for about 800 yards farther up river. I drove down a river road to try and get closer, stopped and heard him locate in a couple different spots; probably the coon ran through some toppled trees making the dog work hard to finish his track and be right about his choice of tree. Shortly, I heard him throw a nice big locate and he settled in for what turned out to be a long time on the tree.
I was able to drive within about 750 yards of his tree but after walking most of the distance was stopped by water between us too deep to cross. So, I moved part way back in the direction I started out and attempted to walk in again. This time I found a water crossing where the water stayed out of my chaps if I stood on my toes and held my chaps up tight with my hands as I inched along. It was a lot longer walk from there but at least I got across, and Charlie told me about his tree the whole time without letting up. The rest of the walk was easy and Charlie sure looked and sounded good under his tree with a couple coons in the top. The photo shows just a little of the mess he sorted through to locate the right tree.
I’m sure glad this pup is turning out ok. He’s the one my wife picked for herself when he was about 12 days old; probably because he was developing more slowly than his littermates and needed more watchful care. Getting this pup going has been great for my coon hunting because now when I head out my wife asks, “take’n Charlie?,” and when I get home she wants a report to her question, “how’d my Charlie do!” Charlie is on his way to being a nice dog. Life is good.
You may have guessed it’s snowing and blowing hard this evening, or I’d be out coon hunting again tonight.
Happy hunting.
You ort to write a book like Ol Wick about your training procedures, wisdoms and thoughts and those great trips out coon hunting.

It's one of those rare early winters in the Turtle Mountains when the lakes, bogs and swamps freeze over and it's not terribly cold with deep snow. This allows me to hunt the nastiest swamps where the coons hide all summer because I can walk across the frozen water.
So last night I sent Super Charlie after snow coons and he did a super job. Four dumps, two tracks, two trees (both plus), total of five coons seen, one coon dropped for a job well done. Both tracks started cold, he pushed them until they warmed up and coons were jumped and running, and then he forced them to climb deep in the country.
I'm seeing Frito's intensity to find and tree coons in this youngster. He's loud and sounds most like his mom; sort of a roaring bawl track mouth and hard chop on tree. I was impressed all the way around with his performance.
Super Charlie (Frito x Sloopy) Thanksgiving Day, 2011, treed deep on an Aspen in the middle of the Thompson Swamp.
Same deal in 2007, Thanksgiving night, Frito was 7 months old and he split treed with the grease in this same swamp. Special nights I remember for a lifetime. There's much to be thankful.
"It's snowing coons on Oak Mountain."
