When I screw my antenna into my garmin handheld, it seems to be a bit loose. I unscrewed the antenna and looked at the threads and the threads on the copper handheld part looked slightly flat only on one side. All the threads on this copper part are all slightly flat just on one the side. Is this from being stripped or is this how it comes out of the factory ? The threads on the antenna appear to be fine

Nick the SMA connection could perhaps be a bad one on your astro. Even with that being the case when you place the antenna on it and slightly snug it up it should bottom out and be tight. You didn't say which model you have 220 or 320.
The 220's were bad about the adjustment nut on top coming loose which I suspect might be your problem. Take something either the edge of a screwdriver or needle nose pliers and tighten that nut. Be VERY careful not to over tighten or move the SMA connection or you will break the connection on the bottom of it.
Actually if your seeing the flat spot I suspect the nut has come off of yours and you may not see a nut either.

It's a astro 320.... Just noticed the whole copper part can move around, and there is a nut still there. That must of been what I was feeling when I said the antenna was a bit loose when it was screwed in.... Still don't understand why one side of the copper threads would be flat.

I'll try to tighten that nut and see if it helps.

Thanks!

There is a very small wire in the bottom side of th SMA connection that will break if it moves or spins around. Then you only track two hundred yards.
It is flat on one side so when it slides in from the bottom it mates up with a flat spot in the housing so it doesn't spin and break connection when some one over tightens antenna

well here is a new one: I was using my 220 the other night, and the dogs got out of pocket, when they did we returned to the truck. I then, proceded to connect my 220 to my roof mount antenna, I had cold fingers, I really never knew how hard it was to connect the roof mount antenna connector to the 220. So, I got to looking around for an answer, and I have found a connector or extender to make it so much easier to connect and the connector that I have found also will keep you from over tightening the sma connector and breaking the internal wire. I guess you could find these connectors at any radio shack or you can look them up at buzzards roost hunting supply, they carry them in there garmin accessories area. These are different than the quick connect connectors. This is just food for thought for ya. I also ordered a gizmo vest for my 220 to give it a test run to see if they really work. They seem like a cell phone protector (military grade). So, we will see this weekend and I will report back here. LOL. Have a great day!

Gregory those connectors do work well. You can also find them on e-bay for less than 2 bucks each.

The Gizzmo Vest are real popular also. Like everything else they are not for everyone but that is what I use unless I am in my boat. Then its mounted on the instrument panel in a holder.

Number one question I get is will they float. The answer is NO. Had that discussion with one of the fine Gentlemen form Garmin at Autumn Oaks last year. I told him I haven't been brave enough to put a live unit in one and test it. He offered up a live unit for the test and it did not float.

Hey Bruce, thanks for the picture. That's what I'm talking about. I just figured since about 10 folks have called and sent me there 220's to be repaired and they had the internal wire broken, plus after sat. nite. I knew there had to be something to help. I am so glad you started this thread. Thanks again. I am going to try the gizmo vest this weekend. LOL. Keep the tips coming folks. Greg

dc 40

Had a 40 go down last night. Thought the battery was dead so i plugged it in when I got home. On the charger it blinks from blue to red. Take it off the charger and I get a solid red light and it won't shut off. I took the collar apart and disconnected the plug from the board. Left it unplugged for about an hour and plugged it back in then it wouldn't turn on. Plugged it back in and same thing with the blue red blinking. I tried to update it when it was on and solid red and when it got to 10% it would stop and say to cycle the power on the collar. Had to take it apart and try it again and nothing. I was gonna leave it on the charger for a while and see if that helps any. Anybody have this happen?

If you followed the video and nothing there could be a couple things you could possible try.

Take the battery housing apart and unplug the battery. Take a close look at the electronic board and look for any discoloration. Take some contact cleaner and spray the board and brush lightly with toothbrush. If you see any spots on the board, brush them a little harder but be careful.

If that doesn't work then call Garmin 1-800-800-1020

I heard yesterday that the price for repair/exchange has went up on the Dc 30's and 40's to $120 from $90.

Hope this helps!!

Turn on your GPS collars before you put them on your dogs. lol

Last night cut two with TT 10 collars on. Only problem is they were off. Had to hunt the first turn out the old fashion way which was no fun. Actually I stayed at one corner and had a guy go down the road about a mile. About 10 minutes he came back and said he heard them treed. I never heard them bark. lol

I am not sure how your Garmins are working but I am mostly running the ALPHA now. Some of the time the dogs get treed somewhere about a mile but most of the time 400-800 yards. I have been out 2-3 times a week for about a month now and can't remember the last time I lost signal. Things get better everyday!! That is if you turn them on!!

I have a 320 and constantly having to calibrate the compass to show me the right direction of my dogs? If my dogs are North of me, my 320 will show them to the south. Any ideas?

Bruce

On my alpha there are a straight line for each collar one green & the other red, always across the entire map, what is it & how do I get it off, & get it to stop?

Thank you

Posted by on 04-25-2014 02:33 PM:

Try going to the map page and then selecting the menu bars at the bottom. If "STOP NAVIGATION" is on the top of the list then select that and they should go away. If not let me know and we can go to plan B.

I did what you said & I did not see stop navigation any where I guess it's time for plan B thank you

Blues, I will be in the store today until 1pm. If you can have your alpha with you we can go over a couple things.
904-692-1568

One thing I know will those lines off is a master reset.
That will also delete your dogs and any saved points. Putting dogs back on is simple so if you don't have too may points saved that would be the way to go.
With the ALPHA off put your finger or thumb on the upper left corner of the screen. Turn it on while you continue to have your finger on the screen. Once it starts up it will ask if you want to erase user data. Tell it yes and it will start up with factory settings.

These lines are essentially your dog's track. Well, how can that be you ask, my dog did not go in a straight line to where he is at now???

Any time you track a collar, those lines for the dog will be on there. Any time the dog is out of range, or you turn your garmin off, the next time you power it up and start tracking your collar again, a straight line will be drawn for any area the collar was not tracked because your garmin has no way of knowing the track the dog took from the last time the collar was tracked until the next time you started tracking again. A straight line is always made when tracking info is lost, due to you moving locations, loosing signal on your collar, turning your handheld off etc.
The way to fix this is start a new hunt and those are erased, easily. You can also fix this by not tracking your collar when you change locations or something.

Let me try to explain it further.... Last night I went hunting and treed a coon about 500 yards from the truck. When I got to the truck after getting my dog, I powered my handheld off. Right where I loaded my dog would be the last tracking info I had because the handheld was turned off at that point.
I drove 3 miles down the road, turned my garmin on, turned my dog out, then a straight line was made from where the collar was now to where I loaded him last after treeing the coon.
Notice I never said I stopped tracking the collar with my handheld, I merely turned it off. Had I told the hand held to quit tracking the collar when I loaded him from treeing the coon, that line would not be on there to where I was at last.

If you do not want to loose your data, I highly advise against a master reset. If the alpha has the start new hunt feature like the 220 and 320, and I am sure it does, just do that when those lines become anoying!
