Frito's not been himself for the past couple weekends. He's hunted well but didn't sound right to me and needed extra time to recover after hard hunting. Monday he came down with a bad fever. After a few days of tests and working with the vet the diagnosis is pyothorax, which is an infection of the chest/lungs which results in pus fluid buildup in the chest cavity. He was overnight hospitalized and will remain there for an aggressive treatment protocol until he recovers. Treatment includes repeated draining and flushing of his chest cavity, x-rays and antibiotics. A sample of the fluid from his chest was also shipped to the university lab to determine type of bacteria and appropriate antibiotics. The vet said he's a trouper through the intensive treatments and acts like nothing is wrong when in reality he's very ill.

i just knew something was wrong with him but didn't know what to point to until the fever developed. It even fooled the vet on the first check up, blood work, etc. Not until we did an x-ray on the second trip to the vet did we see the problem (fluid pushing up and displacing his lungs).

I should not have let his drive every time cast into the woods lull me into thinking he was okay. Some dogs have too much go power for their own good. Most likely the infection came from inhaling a seed or something or maybe a stick or barbwire that cut him. We may never know.

Frito's back in the woods...

He struck easy, less than 1/4 mile into the woods and ran a firey track about another 1/4 mile.

Right away, I spotted two coons in a nearby tree and thought man, maybe the boy missed on his rebound from injury???

I couldn't find his coon and gave up shining, the evidence against him was in the next tree. As I was coming around the tree I looked up again one more time and saw a shadow, and then a tail way up among the leaves. I smiled, like I've smiled seems like a thousand times before.

He threw 100+ bpm for over an hour on this tree. His face shows it all.

His son, Charlie was there too.

Even one of the coons in the next tree over was impressed with all the tree power. The coon in Frito's tree was not, because...

This one's coming out for Frito!!!!!!!!!!

Wouldn't you know I left my shells in the Jeep and had to walk all the way out (642 yards) and back for my buddy. lol. Now that's commitment.

Happy hunting and may everyone have at least one more night in the woods with their special dog.

It's good to have Frito back.

Trapper's turning into a swamp dog. I noticed the other night by the Garmin he swam across a small lake and struck on the other side. He was in the woods alone and the distance must have been 200 yards open water. He finished the track with coon eyes looking down. The above photo is of a coon he caught the next night he went to the woods. The pups got grit... it didn't go well for this coon.

Tucker

Tucker is just a silly puppy in dog's clothing at this point. The above pic I got of him a few nights ago was taken after he and Frito got deep to find a track, about 1.5 miles. First they hunted a long lake shore, then moved to a second small lake, then moved out into the oak savana and found some coons foraging acorns. Frito is a master of his hunting ground and has this coon sense about him to know where to go to find opportunities wherever they may be on a given night. Just throw Frito out somewhere in a hayfield or something in big country and he does the thinking and hunting. I hate having to do the thinking for my dog. That type go down the road.

I found Tucker on this little tree and Frito not far off on a much bigger tree. Both had the meat. Tucker never looked over at Frito nor needed to be tied to his tree. He's going to be a no-pull tree dog. Just wish he'd get grow up.

Hunted sloopy friday night and her and a nice young wildcard pup treed 3 singles in 38 minutes. This old girl has still got it. Not bad for being a decade old, she probably been coon huntin more than i have, lol.

Frito's back on his feet and feeling pretty good now if not for being somewhat out of shape for lack of hunting.

Saturday night Jay Brademeyer and I were hunting along the Sheyenne and Frito caught a big coon in a deep-water oxbow. It escaped him for a couple minutes as we arrived on the opposite bank only to crawl up and hide between the washed out roots of an old tree that sat just above the waterline on a near vertical section of bank.

After walking around to the opposite bank, we prepared ourselves to gather him up and without a word from either of us, Frito reached straight into that black hole full of teeth and talons and pulled that rascal out with ease. I'm sure the coon was the most surprised by this stunt after holding the dog off for several minutes in the apparent safety of his lair. Then Frito showed the coon what the ole big dog could do. I was respectful and broke things up before the job was finished so this coon could run along the Sheyenne for another day.

Isn't it amazing how fun good dogs, friends and a heavy dose of adventure can make this sport.

Super Charlie got a whopper coon.

A couple nights ago, I sent Charlie into the wind on a route that took him between a cornfield and the west bank of the mighty MO river. He left on a run like he actually knew what he was doing, and 3-4 minutes later struck about 400 yards away, and then moved the track much farther into the woods. He treed a little over .5 mile away. I found his coon near the top of a cottonwood tree, lying flat on a large limb. The 22 hollowpoints just didn't seem to have much of an effect and he came out dead on the last round.

Had a memorable time last night with Frito and Tucker. Coons found on every drop and all trees less than a 1/2 mile away. I was able to drive right up to all but one tree. Three times struck, four times treed (one split), all plussed, counted nine coons total over the boys. Never had it so easy before. October is wonderful.

Didn't kill any coons. Killed a coyote with the 22 that came in on us as we were walking away from the first tree. He won't mess with my dogs or me any more.

copper top.. alone ... one dog , one truck and one gun.... for the first time in his life... dropped in the country over a half a mile at 2:30 am loaded up on the hard wood with two rickies looken down....man that feels good when they do that by them selves for the first time... he treed it in the same holler as his mother ol sloopy treed one of her very first coons alone , about 9years ago or so.... brought back memories...

at this stage of the game he has some good tools to work with. he has been a natural, wich make training alot smoother, and makes this trainer look like he knows somthing... lol.. funny how those naturals make us look good..

Here's photos I took last weekend of my buddies (Frito x Sloopy litter) telling me about the coons they searched out and treed all by themselves. They all have the drive to bust brush to find coons and each one had the meat each time he treed. No buckets, no corn/flower/bean fields; it was big, wild northern woods and lakes country for all of these trees.
