I guess some folks are so simple minded that they truly believe all six breeds came off the ark. I hate to disapoint you but no matter what your mamma told you they are all cross bred.

Crossbreeding is not bad ALL the time. For instance, if you breed a male walker with a female plott, you will have pups strong on the coon dog side, but that have influence on hog. Now, if you breed a plott with a feist (it can happen), you have a half bred mutt. The best dog i had was a redbone/blackmouth curr mix. he was the best hog/coondog ever.

It really amazes me that there are so many people on here talking about cross breeding between coondogs. Poodle x Lab that's a crossbreed, heck that's a crossbreed that they can't even reproduce past F1 (basic genetics F1 = labradoodle x labradoodle). A coondog is a coondog is a coondog. Whether it is red, tri, blue, ticked or not is only coat color. Read the breed descriptions there is really very little difference between the coonhounds besides coat color. We have breed certain traits into certain variations of coonhounds - walkers - far hunters with more tree than trail. Redbones closer hunters with less tree than trail. etc etc etc. Personally I would love to see the UKC open up a registry for American Coonhounds with all the same stuff a "pure" hound gets. If you breed a 'PR' Walker to a 'PR' Blue Tick you still get a 'PR' hound. Maybe by doing this we could breed some brains back into some of these over bred variations of coonhounds we have now.

In the case of Treeing Walker, English, and American Bluetick crosses, I call that bring the blood back to the English Hound where it all started.

Some of the best dogs I ever hit the woods with were crossed. I use to know alot of old timers that didn't want pure breds they said they weren't smart enough, that you had to cross em to get any brains. Of course I don't "totaly" agree with that but I do know "papers don't tree a coon"

10-4 my dad use to say, everytime a papered dog makes a mistake, tear off a little corner, by the time they get it right you'll have a pile of shreaded paper.

I'm pretty sure I'll be looking for a walker or english x bluetick on my next hound. I have two pure breed english males now but my first was I'm pretty sure walker x bluetick. A lady found him in the road (aprox 5 wks old) and brought him to me. He died at 2.5 yrs of age just really starting to turn it on. I was going to single register him and got the papers in the mail the day after I buried him.
