Bluetick Days

We had a great time at Bluetick Days in Batesville, Ms this past weekend. I hunted Blueduck Thursday night in the junior class. Blueduck didn’t do a thing by most people standards, but I was very pleased with my 13 month old pup. He went his own way and hunted alone for the most part. The second time we turned loose, Blueduck treed close behind us and held his tree with one of the other dogs treeing not far away, and he thought he had him too. Thursday night we had a dead cast.

Friday
I hunted Merle, Friday night. Merle won his cast, scoring on one coon. At the second tree, Merle and a walker gyp, had to split the tree points. With 3-4 minutes left in shinning time, the judge saw the coon, but the other hunters including, myself could never see him, circle these up. Merle finished 5th.
Rhett hunted Case Friday night. He was very upset with the outcome of this night, but that’s all part of the game we are all playing. Just move on to another night.

Saturday
I hunted Merle again. Merle didn’t win his cast, but I was very pleased with his performance. I made a bad call in the beginning of the hunt that got me 125-, which made me have to play catch up. The last drop, Merle split tree from the other dogs, but his tree had to be circled.
Rhett hunted Case again, Saturday night. No win, but Rhett said he was very pleased with the way Case performed. At some point in the hunt, Rhett had to make a decision. If he votes minus a dog, Rhett wins the cast, not to minus, that dog wins the cast. In Rhett’s words, it was plan to see that the dog didn’t deserve to be minused.

But the highlight to this past weekend was meeting and spending time with all of the find Bluetick folks from all over this country.

Took Merle to the 3rd annual Lincoln County Coonhunters Cancer hunt. These fellows put on a great hunt. Fun was had by all. They had a live band, with a well-known coonhunter playing the drums and steel guitar. These boys auctioned off everything from Bird Houses, to Butter Milk Pies, which I won the bid on I might add. I draw out with two outstanding fellow, both of which, locked their keys in their trucks at the same time when we were leaving to go to the woods lol. One of the fellows is preacher, but he sure knows how to break in a truck. Lol He opened the doors to both trucks. We had a dead cast but I had an enjoyable hunt. Back to that pie, I got home at 3:00am, got me a big glass of milk and a piece of the pie. Sure was good, so I had to get another. By the time I hit the bed, I had eaten the whole thing!!!
Great Job fellows.

Lincoln County Coonhunters Cancer Benifit

Tommy it was good to see you over at Brookhaven this past weekend. We didn't have a great hunt either. I drew a good cast of hunters, Smoke got Snake bit and I had to put him in the truck. I gave him a couple of Benedrills and kept a watch on him. His foot swelled up about two sizes. His foot had not swelled anymore when I got home. I put him on some antibiotics and his foot is still swelled some on top, but he will be fine. One dog did get in there deep and had a coon at the end of the hunt. I think he came out with 100+ points.

Took Merle and Buleduck for a short hunt Tuesday night. I've been having trouble getting Merle to hunt alone. Cut both together and off they go, but alone, Merle just wouldn't go. Merle is a dog, if you put a switch on him, the hunt is over. He will completely shut down. So that is not an option with Merle. His hunting has been getting better alittle each time, but I think it he has finally figured out what he needs to do. It has been hard to strick a coon in Gumswamp lately. I sent Merle up a little oak flat, and he started covering ground. Not in a stright line, but back and forth till he had covered the whole flat, without a strick. He eventually worked his way into a pine thicket, and was getting close to another logging road. I had rode around to catch him, and was waiting on him to make it to the road. He was 150 from the road when he located, and locked down treed. I found him on a Tala tree, about 15 yards from a deer feer. I didn't thing he had the coon, but was well please with him hunting so hard. Next I turned Blueduck out on an old logging road between a pinethicket and an oak flat. He went in about 400 yards and turned back toward the road, drifting off to my left. When he was abotu 200 yards from the road, he fell treed. I went in and found him on a huge Pin Oak. There was coon sign and cut acorns all over the ground. I couldn't shine the tree very well and never did see the coon. I don't know if he had him or not, but with all the coon sign, he could have been there. I figured noone would believe me that the coon were cutting acorns this time of year, so I started to pick up a few for proof. Thats when I realized it was acorns from last year's crop. The ground was covered. I didn't see a coon but still had an enjoyable hunt.

We had our BBOA Sectional Saturday night. We didn’t have a good turnout. We had 6 reg dogs, 1 Nite Ch, and 1 Grnite. Both , the nitech cast and our cast came in with 450+. The other two were dead cast. We had a 3 dog cast, with a Bluetick female and 2 Bluetick males. Ole Merle was clicking, with 4 first trees, but the points weren’t clicking for him. The second drop, Merle had second stick and first tree, but the tree was slick, and draw minus. On the way to the third tree, I heard a little squabble, but all dogs were minding the manner when we got there. The last drop, Merle had first and first and the other two dogs covered him. On the way to the tree, Merle stopped treeing, and was off the tree when I got there. He came to me when we got there. I didn’t hear anything going on before we got there, so I’m not sure why he left. Anyhow, we saw that coon also, more minus. Eli Keller’s Rue female won the cast with 450 +. But, let me tell you, she is one of the finest Bluetick females I’ve been to the woods with. She spilt away, twice, and had a coon both times. From what I see, she would not cover on the slick trees.
Special thanks to Mr. Gerald Everett with BBOA Zone 7, for coming down and judging our bench show, and Chase McLver from Poplarville Ms for being a non-hunting judge for our GrNite Ch cast.

Took Merle and Blueduck to Gumswamp last night. I sent Blueduck up an Oak flat off the Daniel Field’s road. He went in and struck a hot track about 75 yards off the ATV trail. Palmettos are really thick in there, and someone had cut a walking trail a few years back. Bluebuck push him right down the trail through the thick Palmetto, for about 150 yards, and then turned back west. After about 250 yards headed west, he treed. He sounded like he had treed on the edge of the cutover, but when I got in there he was about 40 yards out in the cutover. I found him treed on a tree about 6” around. After tying him back I moved around to where I could see the top. No way a coon is going to climb this fast in the edge of a cutover., wrong. There he was, 15 feet off the ground. I gave Ole Blueduck and good petting and headed back to the ranger. I had made up my mind that I will only hunt Merle alone for now on, other than comp hunts. He has got to be able to do it alone. If he is with company, he looks great, but alone, he aint worth a plug nickel. I headed on down the road and cut Merle out. Merle drifted around, but never got over 250 yards, then came back. I sent him on up an old logging road toward a feeder. The tire was wet from were a coon had been, but Merle never could move the track away from the feeder. After sitting there for 30 minutes, I decided to call him on in and call it a night.

Took Merle Friday night to Franklinton La. to their UKC night hunt. We came out with a dead cast. It was hot with a bright moon. The second turn out of the night, Merle struck at 400 yards, and I could just barely hear him. Him and another dog had trailed out of hearing, headed to a black top road. As they were getting close to the road, we both withdrew. Beings I was judging, I had to stay with the cast, and, gave my lead to the other handler to catch Merle when he went to get his. Watching the Garmin, I could see Merle had made it to the road and had went down it a short ways, then he stopped moving. I told the other handlers, Ole Merle is treed or dead, one or the other. Make a long story short, they had tree about 50 yards off the road.

At 10:00 pm Saturday night I loaded Blueduck and headed to Gumswamp. I sent him up an old logging road off the Steel Bridge road. He struck a bad track worked it in pretty deep and turned back to the road. When the track would brake down, he would make a circle and pick it back up near where he lost it. He had done this twice, each time moving the track further, after the third time he treed. I found him on a huge Pine, but never could fine the coon. I was pleased with him, and he is learning how to work these bad tracks.

Sounding and looking good Tommy! That's a big pine, hard to find those coon. Tracks aren't near as good lately as they were a few weeks ago. Tough on pups and young hounds right now. Take Care.

Meet my new addition to the family. This is Janey, she is about 3 ½ months old and has a personality that is out of this world. I have been leash breaking her and teaching her to come. And liking her more and more every day.

She is a real Live Wire, and she messed up my roll of Romex.

Rhett, Leanne, Laney, and I, when to Ava Missouri this past weekend for the Uchtman Memorial Hunt. I headed out at 4:00am Thursday morning to be up there for the buddy hunt. 10 hours is along ride, alone, I mean to tell you! A storm rolled in right at dark, with heavy rain and lighting. It rained all night, so needless to say, we didn’t hunt. They had a live Bluegrass band, and a fish fry, which very good I must say. Friday morning Rhett and his gang rolled in around 5:00am. They slept for a few hours and were off sightseeing and took Laney swimming. I spelt the day at the Club house just visiting with folks. I mostly just lessened. I wish I would have had a tape recorder, because there were so great story teller and great stories being told. I laughed so, made my cheeks hurt. There was Bluetick people from all over the country. Friday night’s hunt had 2 Grnite cast, 4 or 5 Nitech caste, and 7 Reg cast, I think. (46 dogs total)I entered Blueduck in his first nite hunt (other than the all blue hunt at bluetick days). Blueduck was too fat and out of shape, but was having a great night up to the third tree. He had 350 + after the second tree. On the third tree Blueduck had 1st. and 1st. with a coon, but after about 3 minutes into the tree he packed up and left on a hot track. We found a little bitty kitten coon in that tree, and I just figured he left on the old sow. He took the track deep and crossed a road, and the track started to break down. Long story short, he never treed it and he was shot for the rest of the hunt. Rhett won his cast with Case and was high scoring dog of the Grnite ch with 375 +. I THINK he was high scoring Male Bluetick for Friday night. Saturday night didn’t go as good for Case, he separated from the other dog, and took his track deep towards a road. The judge called interference because he was getting close to the road, and didn’t want to send the other dogs to him. Three minutes after the interference call, Case treed and had a coon. He would have had first and first on that one, which would have gave him the win. I didn’t comp hunt Saturday night, instead, I went pleasure hunting Gary and Scotty Uchtman and another guy named Matt. We had a really enjoyable hunt, and Ole Blueduck had to show off a little in front of these guys. Hack, Scotty even offered to trade me, my choice of two Case pocket knives for him. As bad as I need a good Case knife, I decided to just keep Ole Blueduck. Well you could plainly see the knives had been used quite a bit any ways.

This is the interferecen coon

This is Deets, Rhetts pup off of Case and Clara. Deets is 3.5 months old. Rhett name him after Joshua Deets of Lonesome Dove. Old Deets was their tracker and trail blazer. Rhett laid a trail, without the pup seeing it and videoed the results. The whole video was much longer, and Deets even opened on the trail some, but I cut it down to post on here.
