There are a lot of threads talking about numbers being down wtc. Why would anyone want to put more requirements on handlers before they can enter a dog? That also would mean that more clubs would have to hold more events when most are already strapped for help.

I have hunted with gr. Nite dogs that could tree coon most any night and I wouldn't own them if given to me. I have a female right now that couldn't win most casts or pass a HTX test. She makes to many slicks but she is an absolute joy to hunt otherwise. (we are working on the slicks) We need to worrying about what other people think our dogs should or shouldn't do and stop worrying about what other people's dogs can or can't do and hunt what makes us happy. We definitely don't need UKC to put more requirements on us, which means more bookkeeping and higher registration fees. Just take care of your own dogs and be happy.

The HTX program was never intended to be a pre-requisite to being able to hunt a hound. I was intended for folks who don't hunt to have a way to title a dog that could and most likely would be a decent comp. dog. It was also a way for the company to make a few more dollars off the people who don't hunt in the hunts. Personally, the program is good, but it doesn't mean a thing to me and never will. What it does do, from the negative side, is allow people who have a dog that refuses to hunt with another, or is a rattlesnake mean one, to get a title on it, and put those genes back into the pool for breeding. This program has its purpose, but having to have it under a dogs belt to hunt a hunt is far from necessary, and could even be a bad deal when all the pages are looked at. JMO

I'm relatively new to the UKC forum. Actually the slam series is what brought me to check out this web site. I also realize this thread is old but it is new to me.

I would think the average comp hunter would have many nights of htx type hunting to train before entering a competition event. Why would anyone want to compete with a hound that can't run and tree it's own coon? The difficult thing is free casting with three other dogs and having your dog perform as well as it would on it's own. Many good coon treeing dogs will look awful in the company of other dogs.

Nite champ and Grand Nite degrees tell me that someone has put forth the effort in training and competing to achieve a higher level of success. I am not suggesting that all Nite Champion and Grands are created equal but they all had to win. The htx degree has nothing to do with this accomplishment. And in my opinion should not be required for anything but it's own distinction.

If you want HTX on your dog's title by all means go for it. I'm sure some will have fun doing this. But the truth is it really doesn't mean much. Some earlier post said htx is a joke and I at first was in agreement. But if it brings more to the sport maybe it is a good thing.

I think HTX is a great thing,,but should only be done by choice,,not have to,,I love the HTX hunt,because I cannot comp. hunt,I have severe nerve damage in my legs and can't keep up with the rest of the group,,but can hunt the HTX hunts at my pace,so it works out well for me,,,but the problem is we don't hardly have any HTX hunts here where I'm from,,we had 1 all last year,,and the others are too far of a distance for me to travel that far away on my budget,,wish we would have a lot more of them,,cause that is something I would attend to everyone of them

Maybe some handlers should have to pass a hearing or visual acuity test. A lot of them hear dogs over yonder, and can't see a coon in front of them unless it is for their dog. How many dogs have earned titles because of the handler and not the dog?
