jbailey
I got jim in my kennel and kent has j-ann.
Jim is showin alot of promise. A lil more each time I take him out. He is yelpin alot on track and lookin up at the tree and has barked up a few times. Im gonna hunt him by hisself tonight to see if he is chase barkin the old dog or actually openin on track. As for Jo-ann is bad skidish and kent has a better set up to help her get over that than I do. I did bring her in the house for a lil while, and that made her come out of her dog house and wag her tell when she seen me. As far as go well neither of them lack that. Jim covered 4.12 mile with my old dog 2 nights ago. He has more drive than a couple 2yro dogs I've hunted with.

Jo-Ann update:
She has come out of her shell here at the house and loves to come get some loin now. I took her the other night and she did good. She just needs some work with the people skills and I think she'll be a special one.
She is very very intelligent. She tries to open the door with her paws and her mouth. (thank God I have round knobs) She loves to go and boy does she go.

Having a good time down here in Mississippi. Jenny and Jack are showing out well down here for us. Hopefully the storms and rain will stop and we can get some good hunting in tonight.
I'll put a more detailed description of what happened with some pictures later on when I get back to the house.

Winona, MS hunt (Thursday night)
Well here is the long delayed hunt details from the weekend down in Winona, MS.
First I would like to extend a GIANT thanks to Larry Stringer for letting me tag along with him down to Winona and learn more about the history of the Redbone breed in a weekend than I could have in a lifetime otherwise. I am forever in your debt.
Thursday night we cut loose with Chris Adams and his son Tristen and it was a fabulous time. We cut the loose and they hunted out a patch of woods and then Chris took us down to a field. Chris' dog Luke went out straight and the pups (Jenny and Jack) went down to the right. Ended up that Jack struck in and got bobbled up in a thicket, Jenny came in to assist but it just wasn't going to end up at a tree. Chris' dog Luke struck in and ended up treed with the meat. Jack and Jenny pulled down to Luke after he was treed for a bit. Luke did a good job on a cold lay up coon. Here are some pictures from that tree.
Larry with Jenny
Jack
The second round Thursday was a good one too. We cast out with Ozell Herod and Meredith Sloan. Ozell's Rose dog ended up treed on a tough track, and Jenny was split from the old dog and holding the pressure. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of that one. But Ozell's Rose is a nice hound who is a very nice tree dog. She will flat get the Job done on a tough night.

Winona, MS (Friday night)
Friday night we cut them loose again. We went with Ernie Anderson and a local guy (who's name escapes me). We cut them loose and they were gone....problem is they went int he wrong direction.lol
So we collected them up and cast out again. That time Jack and Jenny got out there by themselves and got struck in. They moved the track well and ended up treed. The tree was snagged and nasty....so no pictures of ole mister ring tail. But here are some pictures of Jack and Jenny a their tree.

Me and Jack
The second round found us with Chris Adams and his son again. The dogs struck in but never put an end to it. Even with that it was a great night of hunting with good folks.

Winona, MS (Saturday night)
We only dropped out on the first round on Saturday and we split the pups up. Both pups did a good job too. Jack ended up striking and treeing ahead of a very nice old dog. Other than that it was a tough night for hunting. It had rained really hard all day and the fog had set in rather thick.
All in all it was a FANTASTIC experience to go down there and sit with the stalwarts of Redbone breed and listen to story after story of dogs and people that I had only heard of in passing....the greats of years gone by. My only hope is that I was a good representative of the younger generations of the Redbone breed.
Thanks again to Larry Stringer for a wonderful time and unforgettable memories. I'm sure as time passes, and the Good Lord willing, we'll make some more with these old Red Dogs.

Jim
He is showin me alot of progress each time I take him out. He is by no means scared of the dark and no matter what you cut him loose with he is gonna pack with whatever goes the deepest the fastest. He is openin up real good on track and startin to bark up some. He is Coon crazy. When the Coon hits the ground he will go crazy wantin it. Coon got ahold of his ear last night and it was drippin blood but he never let go.
He still hasn't gotten his full voice on track yet causin him to yelp every breath, by no means is he gonna be a silent mouth pup appears to be chop on track and either chop or short bawl on tree. Still not treein good enough to tell.
The only complaint I gotten from dad is that he opens to much on track. I can live with that though.
Thank you Larry for takin a chance and allowin me to own Jim. And thanks to Kent for settin this up.

JoAnn
Well I've got JoAnn comin to me every time I call her in the yard and at the house. So I believe it's time for the timber for the young girl. With what I've seen already, and the fact that I've got a bit of a handle on her I'm excited to see what comes of this little female.
She should be a good one like her brother is coming out to be. She's smart as a whip, fast, has great endurance, and is tree minded....that makes one fun pup to take with you. =)
I think I'm going to take her tomorrow night as long as the weather holds out. Wish me luck.
P.S. Jon, It was my pleasure. I can't wait to get the litter mates out there together and get some good film and pics of them....with Jack, Jim, and Jo Ann it should be one heck of a loud one. I'll see you soon brother.

Do any of y'all pups close there eyes when you pet them? And when I walk out to mess wit Jim he will be jumpin and prancin till I get there then he will stand still as a statue to let you love him up. Did he get this trait from jabo? And he opens a whole lot on track, where did that come also?
Thank yall for the help

Jenny is very open on track and so are several of the other pups. But with that being said I don't know the females. It makes them hard to beat on the strike and also makes it hard on some other dogs to concentrate on what they're doing.
I as far as the eye closing thing, I would say that is a quirk that is a Jim quirk. Now the standing still thing, Jack does it to, he loves to be pet on and just calms way down. Which....if it does come from Jabo I hope that I can reproduce that. =) I like that Jack doesn't jump all over me. =)
Hope that helps.

Well Jack got it done in fast fashion last night. He went a total of 720yards and slammed a tree.
He went down the treeline there and struck in on a smoking hot track at about 500 yards. He then commenced to burn that coon up and fell treed at about 720yards.
It took me and my son (who was test driving his new hip boots) quite a bit of time to get in there as my son wasn't the fastest thing on two legs with those new hip boots on. When we got there he was belly up on a tree givin it the what for.
It was a big ole boar coon with only one ear left and the other about half gone. He didn't have as much fight left as I had wanted....but what was left Jack didn't leave in him very long.
I was proud of my Son and my Jack last night. It was a good quick hunt. I'll get pictures up after work today.
Here's the pics:

Jim
Had Jim out the night before last for the first time by himself. It was a bad night cold, snowin hard, and about 15mph wind. He had plenty of distractions. It started slow walkin around me and smellin around. I sit on a log next to a lil creek and he came to me to be petted, but I pushed him away 3 or 4 times. After that he started rambled up and down the creek. He ended up about 50yds out before he came back, but he kinda stopped in front of me a feet each time for a second but never came directly to me till I called him.
He worked a few tracks but didn't have any luck with. Sounded like a hog snortin on the creek bank though.
First night out by himself under rough conditions at 7 months I was very pleased. Only direction to go now is forward.
Thanks to Larry and Kent for this opportunity.

Your pups track mouth, may change as he starts getting a handle on things. Jabo was open on track according to how much ground he needed to make up. but always open. not overly mouthy. Jabo was a quick strike dog that would open then move out. hope this helps. give Jim a little time and see if his wide open mouth dosent change some. LWS.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to hunt my walkers with all those red dogs this past weekend. I was amazed truly amazed though on the last drop how the walkers split from the others. It really shows that Jack is growing and willing to do his own thing. We are going to have to go back up to Johns very soon before kill season ends.
I also put a picture up of the spot on Daisy's neck. I went and bought blue knot and cleaned it well and sprayed it. I am probably going to lay her up this weekend and hunt Duke only.

These ole' hounds are pretty resilient. She'll heal up and be ready for next weekend, just keep it clean and she'll heal up in no time flat.

Is Jack independent alot? Maybe we can hunt these littermates together just before the sectional in June. I plan on being there. I have to bring Larry a bunch of fresh cheese. You keep a frozen coon hide for your son for me. Take care.
