looks like GW may set a record for number of presidential vacation days, he will be the very best ever president in this aspect, history will rank him 1st in this benchmark... do hope his remaining time in office will be productive and bring the nation and its citizens prosperity, hope he can come to a successful outcome in Iraq, pursue terrorism where it really exists, keep the economy moving ahead, intiate real tax reform -not handouts to the rich, develop a much need health care plan- not just say go to the emergency room, face the problem of illegal immigration, true support for education and not a no child left behind that has actually left many, rebuild nations infrastructure, and finally work to get corrupt soft $$$ out of the elective process and have the public finance elections, plenty of things that need doing, hope he can lead toward doing some of them...

Don't forget to add "convince the Dems to tap our own energy resources so we will not be so dependent on foreign oil" ie. ANWR
That would go a long way towards bringing citizens prosperity.

--Our economy is doing well, as good as ever. Check the unemployment stats.

--I make under 35,000 a year. I hope you don't mean that I'm rich because my income taxes went way down after G. B. got the first tax reforms passed.

--I hear lots complain about no child left behind.... all's it's done is hold teachers and schools accountable, yet to see how the program has left anyone behind.

--I don't think any one president can rebuild our nations infrastructure in 4-8 years, not even close to being realistic.

--As far as health care plans... as it is now any American has the opportunity to buy their own, raise their income if they can't afford it, or become valuable enough to their employer that they provide it to them. For those that can't do any of the above, yes E.R.'s will treat anyone. Most States have programs that provide health care for low income families at little to no costs. I've personally lived in three States. In TN I had to pay a very low premium. In MN my Health Care was provided for free. In IN the State covered my kids. The States covered this until I bettered my situatiion and can now provide it for myself.

If you think the government (yours an my money) needs to provide more health care coverage then that...... well what's stoping you? Just go and find a poor family and let them know you will cover their health care for the next few years.

congratulations, glad you are doing well, but many in fact are not.... more in poverty then ever, real wages flat in growth, unemployment down, but underemployment is up-up, tax deal actually was for the rich with a few crumbs to the less fortunate, I make less now being semi-retired, but pay more, course glad I have an income to pay with, never mentioned national health insrance-but a plan to see that care is available, have been involved in education many-many years from public school to university level, the no child left behind simply sets artifical guidelines based upon testing that can and is manipulated, texas an example, wish it would up accountability, has not.... these situations are not things created by president bush, but his efforts have done little to alleviate them, course congress does nothing either, but he is the president and needs to exercise leadership and not just partisanship.... still support the president, but many things need doing.... many in our great country dream the dream, but actually live the reality, but greatest country ever, far and away best place to be, but we need to and can make it even better by providing opportunties for success, not handouts...

The Jay Leno story is a hoax.

WORTH THE READING AND THOUGHT TIME.

Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we don't often see....

"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence 2/3s of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What we are so unhappy about?''

Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter? Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job? Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state? Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings.

Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and
computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have , and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks?

The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?

Think about it.....are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful ass every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go.

They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans? Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells , and when criticized, try to defend their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage.

Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad.

We are the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative."

"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, "Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

I've been classified as living in poverty for most of my life, living in poverty in United States is living rich in many places.

I'm no longer living in poverty but when i was I had plenty to eat. I also had no health insurance, but there were a number of government programs that I took advantage of.

The truth is our economy would crumble without a low income population. If everyone was either middle income or high income you wouldn't like the adjustment that our economy would make.

Most people have no idea how complex economics are, thank goodness they are not making the decisions.

Posted by rrs on 08-31-2007 04:53 PM:

have been there too, never actually realized it at the time though, always had food-not maybe what wanted-but enough.. poverty may be absolute or relative, our levels in the absolute realm are low compared to the rest of the world, but in relative terms rich to poor we rank number one in the world.... this is a great-great country very fortunate to be here, but we could make it even better... always will be the haves and have nots, the poor provide many services for the affluent and allow the rich to get richer, you are correct in that economics is quite a difficult thing to understand, never will be nor should be total equality, but providing greater opportunity structures for all will elevate all and every aspect of life in this greatest of all countries... just a fact, most are born in live in, and die in the same social class, now does not mean cannot advance, just much more difficult for those starting at the bottom to do so, believe tougher today with our economy mature, more international competition, less stability, etc., course opportunity still exists, just maybe tougher -steeper hill to climb...

Posted by houndsound on 08-31-2007 06:49 PM:

I think the opportunity to succeed is not only here today, but even easier. It's never been easier to go to college financially for poor people. Tons of grants, scholarships, Military bonuses etc..... are out there that can get anyone through community college.

Unemployment is at an all time low nationally, telling me there are plenty of jobs, especially entry level ones.

Virtually every state offers free to nearly free health care for folks that can't afford ,,, not to mention the many federal benefits to those disabled, free health clinics, laws to admit you in an emergency room, doctors offering reduced rates for low income families etc.....

We live in a country where anyone is free to start their own business.

And aside from that... I've belonged to several Church's and I must say that more important than the Govt. helping out individuals is that there are many many good Americans that are willing and enjoy helping people get started or get re-started in life.

The one thing that all the opportunities I've listed above (except the free health care that exists that the dem.'s say we need?????) is that they require someone to do something. Money is there for college to open doors for better jobs... but you're required to go to school and pass your classes. Jobs are out there, but you're required to show up on time and work hard.

Our public school system is good and your kids can get an excellent education... but you're required to participate in and help them with their homework etc.....

The free market is open for all to participate in.... you're required to make sacrifice and use your imagination though.

Anyone can invest in any company in this country they want (instead of complaining about folks making money... you are free to be one of those folks making money)..... but it requires you to be disciplined and save some money first.

There are many good Christians that will give money to you, tutor you, disciple you, train you, give you a place to live etc....... but it requires you be an active member of a Church.

So I believe we live in a Country with limitless opportunity for anyone that wants to get out of poverty to do so. It simply requires them to do so. The answer is not, and should not rest with George Bush, or any politician or government entity. Freedom is our greatest resource, and all are free to make of their lives what they want. The fact that we keep looking for the government to fix poverty is why poverty grows.

I'll repeat that, "The fact that we keep looking for government to fix poverty is why poverty grows."

excellent response, well thought and stated, agree with it for the most part, but not in totality, what is the difference if health care provided by state level or planned by federal-here is the gov't. using tax dollars to help... are many programs for college, but not quite as easy as you indicate, it takes some time to get financial aid in place, not a 1 day event, what does one do if lacking in funds before the aid kicks in... costs much-much more then it used to, books alone are high dollar, have taught at college level many years and have watched costs esculate... employment statistics are often not what they seem, do not include cronically unemployed-those never in the system, etc.... you are right that opportunity does exist, just not the same for all, gov't. can act to provide a doorway to opportunity, but success is up to the individual and their effort... are many avenues to opportunity, but all do not have the skill needed to access the opportunity structures... wealth may not make one happy, but its lack can sure be a downer....
good for you making use of opportunity and using your own effort to get ahead... no doubt opportunity exists, just much-much easier for some to get to and use it... do not believe the job market is as strong for many as it was when I entered it years back, now it does vary by area, when I graduated from highschool yrs. ago there were many-many-many union factory jobs here, excellent wages-fringes, life time security or so one thought, today here there are none, jobs long gone, the service industry jobs that have replaced them pay far less etc... no doubt one can become rich though hard work, but the reality is most do not, but opportunity there-just not the same for all...

Well thought out response yourself... and I can safely say I agree with most of what your're saying. I've worked with guidance counselors as a Youth Pastor in helping kids get financial aid and you are very right, it's not an easy overnignt process.... so don't start the night before college. I tell most kids that getting financial aid should be their full time job the last summer or two in their highschool years.

And I would extend your statement at the end a little... you said , "no doubt one can become rich though hard work, but the reality is most do not"..... why don't they? I believe the real reason most don't experience security in their finances has nothing to do with how hard they work, job opportunities, govt. programs, taxes etc.... I believe careless use of individual debt is what keeps most enslaved to poverty. I work with lots of poor families, that are making payments on a vacuum cleaners, dish network, car payments, credit card debt, payments on a computer etc........ but can't make their house payment or put food on the table. I really believe debt is the biggest oppressor for most Americans.

Many things are made worse by us.In days past parents worked there entire life to own a home a new car vacations etc.Now kids want what their parents worked there life for and they want it now.How many young married couples do you know living in brand new fancy homes and both driving $25,000 vehicles? How could they have a successful life they are setting themselves up for failure. If more people would teach their kids some good work ethics they would appreciate more.

both of you are correct about debt, not the only thing certainly that creates economic hardship, but a big contributor.. this is the age of credit, buy now pay later, often many do get in dire straights.... the world i grew up in was pay up front or don't buy until you have the funds, except for a house.. always paid cash for vehicles, appliances, hospital, etc... costs today make this impossible, but being prudent with $$$ is a big key... if you spend less then you make, good way to get ahead... today many, myself included buy things we want, but don't really need.. am conservative with $$$ overall, have the overpowering fear that will wake up one day and be in the situation I was born in, not a rational mindset, but a powerful one that influences life choices I make..

Posted by houndsound on 08-31-2007 11:41 PM:

Yepper! Simple steps to financial security

1. Don't borrow money (strange as it sounds it's possible)
2. Save a certain percentage of your income (invest it one day).
3. Spend less then you make (budget).

Thats all it takes. Don't need any Rep. or Dem. in office to help you with that. Stick with those three gems for your life and watch your value grow! Almost anyone in financial trouble has violated one of those three things.

When my kids were growing up I worked 3 jobs. One full time and two part time. What I made on my full time job I qualified for food stamps but with the 2 part time I didn't. Wouldn't file for them if I could have, too proud. Drove old car or pickup they got me where I had to go. I've had a credit card for about 30 years or more have never paid one cent of interest. But then I grew up in a different time. Now days everyone has a new car, pickup, boat, etc. and are all bought on credit. Most young people will not work a weekend job cause that's their time to play.

And most of all, I still found time to coon hunt.

interestingly several "old school" republicans agree with you. i heard recently the under secretary of the treasury during the reagan years suggest that bush was going to end the republican party(or become a dictator, which he feared more). intersesting now too that many consevative organizations are suggesting that hillary (compared to her opponents for 2008 presidency)best represents the consevative agenda.
also interseting thing to note- the gay republican from idaho who resigned today was the point man in congress for nra issues. will the nra feel long term ill effects from this? will gun zealotry start to be percieved as a gay issue?

national review online is one of the largest clearinghouses of conservative thinking. bruce bartlett is as respected a veiwpoint as you will find on their site. read his "get ready for hillary" article written i believe on may 1 2007. this article has been echoed by many other conservatives as they realize that there is almost no way for a republican to win the next election considering how bad the economy is for so many, how bad the war is for so many, and dont underestimate the fallout from this craig scandal. the thing is in the past it was "cool" to be a republican even if they were wrong on issues. now even if they are right on issues, is it cool to be a part of an organization that includes craig,foley,haggard,vidder,gannon/guckert,and others????????
