Thanks for posting the picture. She is 7 months old in this picture.

Could you post a ped on this dog? It is definately a unique looking.
If you didn't say it was a Walker I would have assumed it was a grade B&T.
Good looking dog regardless!

Posted by John Wick on 02-16-2007 06:58 PM:

Hi everyone. It's Lisa, the secretary, posting the following for John Wick:

Howdy there Ozark Preacher fans. It's Friday morning, and I just got a chance to look at the latest info on this post. As I've done in the past, I'll scoot through the list and anyone that wants or needs a response about Preacher dogs will get my best short effort. By the way, this thread is nearing 7,000 views. That's incredible! We'd all have to agree that there's much more than casual interest in this subject. Don't forget, I'm also getting many calls and letters from folks across the country pertaining to Preacher breeding. Why do you folks feel there's so much interest???

To David Morgan and the rest of you regarding his post about Texas County Lady: His short story about getting coon hides for Christmas money possibly seems far-fetched to many of you. But I know Dave Morgan and I knew GR NT CH Texas County Lady very well, VERY, VERY well. His story is absolutely true. Why do you think he still has a big, warm spot in his heart for Preacher Dogs?

To Christy: You did it!!! The power of persistence comes through again. Yes! This is a Preacher-colored dog for sure. Christy, I'm very happy to have expanded your horizons and dog knowledge. Now you'll be able to do the same for many other folks. Pretty cool, huh?

To Huntingnick: No sir, most Preacher dogs do not have a white ring, although some do. Most have a broken-up ring or a ring on one side of their neck but not the other. For some reason, Treeing Walkers in general seem to be getting darker colored. This is happening with many of them that have no Preacher in their past. Something about blanket-back to blanket-back to blanket-back definitely seems to be darkening them up. To my knowledge, Preacher-colored dogs haven't been bred to other Preacher-colored dogs in enough generations to see what will happen when that's done, but I suspect we'll be finding out in the next five to ten years.

To GNeal and Nitechamp Bud: That picture startles me. Is this for real? If so, she is the darkest-colored, Preacher-colored dog I've ever seen. I've never seen one where the color went past the ankles. Never seen one with color on its feet. However, her conformation does look kind of familiar. With all that black color, and no white on her neck, it sure does make a dog look much darker. You know, if her head, neck, and legs were tan, she'd look somewhat lighter. I can't get over the dark coloring all the way down on her feet. Let me just go ahead and say something I'm thinking. When they get THIS dark, I'm not sure we should still call them Treeing Walkers. Yes, I may be responsible for promoting this strain and bringing them to the public, but I believe all of us as Preacher fans might have to put a self-imposed limit on the amount of color we want to accept and still have them issued Treeing Walker registration papers. I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but I'm sure there are many people who share this opinion. I'm really curious to find out if this dog is totally legit. If so, I wonder what her littermates look like. I really wonder if she could pass an extensive DNA test or not. You know, sometimes accidents do occur that even conscientious owners don't realize. I'm not saying that happened. I'm saying it's a possibility, particularly if she has several littermates that look like this.

The best thing about this picture is that it looks like a proud father and son are sharing time and experiences together. Because this dog is the cause of that, she's the right color, isn't she?

P.S. I know that if this dog was born at my house, I wouldn't have registered her. We all need to be conscientious breeders, and we need to always consider the big picture and the best thing for the breed. Well, those statements will probably liven up the discussion some more, huh?

To GNeal regarding her pedigree: If the pedigree is correct, Preacher is back there at least four times, and probably six. But there's a WHOLE bunch of other dogs in there too.

To Trent Poff: If there's any Preacher in that pedigree, I don't know where it's coming from. There are several dogs there that I don't know, but all of them that I do know have no Preacher in them. I'd love to know what's on back further because just one Preacher-colored dog way back in there can keep carrying through, but ONLY as long as the color is still there. I have NEVER seen Preacher-colored dogs come from a litter where at least one parent didn't have the color. I've heard of it, but I've used this blood a lot and have never seen it. Once the Preacher color isn't there to see, I've never seen true Preacher coloring be produced or just sort of pop-up again.

There are quite a few very obviously Preacher-colored dogs around the country whose pedigree has no Preacher anywhere. This has been a sad lesson for me because it plainly shows the extent of paper-switching; and legitimate accidents. The intentional switching is greatly lessening as times goes on, but it still happens and it sure happened a bunch ten years ago, twenty years ago, and much more beyond that.

To Wabashcooner: Thanks for the info. I'll jot it down in my file. I hope Mr. Thomas sends me a letter describing the dog, along with a picture and pedigree. There's no Preacher behind Hard Rock Cafe, so it must be on the momma's side, huh?

To Josh: Yes sir, I agree with you, but there is a chance this is legit. And I do feel we need to respect the Walker standards even though these Preacher-colored dogs have always bothered some people in that respect. I have to admit it bothered me, too, in the beginning. However, so many of them were so good and so pleasurable that it wasn't long and I forgot I actually preferred white and spotted Walkers. As you pointed out, if a bunch of us are going to believe in and promote these dogs, we do have to impose some standards on ourselves. Any breeder of any kind of livestock occasionally has a critter that they know in their heart doesn't completely measure up to breed standards, and, therefore, probably shouldn't have papers. If several of you wanted to work on a project to set some standards, I'd be happy to help.

To Dwils: Thanks for the info you're sharing. The pedigree looks legit, and the dog looks like he matches the pedigree in several ways. Here's another example where Preacher coloring has come through High Style. This dog is going to require me to take a road trip to see him in action, if I'm invited.

To the Iowa Ozark Preacher fan who called Thursday night: Please call again. I have more info.

That's all for now. We'll check back in about a week. Happy Hunting Everyone! John Wick

Mr. Wick,

I am not a Walker man, but I try and keep track with just about everything that has anything to do with hounds & hunting, so pardon me for butting in on y'all's tri-colored party here.

In regards to your quote that I copied above...I do not doubt that there may have been some papers switched and some accidental breedings taking place here and yon. But aren't you kind of forgetting that Preacher himself had to come from somewhere? By that I mean his (Preacher's) ancestors passed on these color genes to him and that means that other dogs with common ancestors to Preachers (registered or otherwise depending on how far back you want to go) could also transmit that color down through other dogs and other lines. I mean that color could be a throwback to some Trigg blood back along the lines --- do you think no other Trigg or similar bred running hounds contributed their genes to the Treeing Walker gene pool?

In other words, while I have no doubt that the majority of dogs colored like this may trace back to your old Preacher dog, aren't you being kind of close minded to the fact that the color could come from other places too in hounds that don't trace back to him without it being automatically a case of paper switching or fence hopping?

OR

As you alluded to yourself, if breeding blanketback to blanketback for generation upon generation upon generation starts producing more and more color, couldn't "Preacher colored" dogs start to show up that way?

Not meaning to offend or start a ruckus...just throwing an idea out there...

Much has been said in this forum about coon treeing ability of the Preacher dogs. Little said about their competition ability. While it is true they sometimes lack that go yonder drive, they are very good at picking up coon that others miss. One example, I sold a friend of mine a little Preacher female named Sissy. On the way to Grand Nite she drew old Lipper 3 times. Sissy won all three. Old Lipper was a heck of a competition dog but in coons so are the Preacher dogs.

dog

a coon dog will beat a tree dog aney night, but you better watch the handler, a good handler will win even with a bad dog i sean it happen with a dog that could not tree his owen coon, but still he woen the world hunt and several big hunts,,he was a tree dog with one hell of a handler, how do i know, i gave the dog to him becals he could not tree a coon,i am a coon huntter not a tree huntter and that is wat most dogs are bread to do instead of tracking, these days,,,,,,and guess wat a lot of people is huntting the off spring out of that no good dog still to this day, just for the pedigree,,,,papers dont empress me,,wat does....A COON DOG,,,NOT A COON HOUND,,and if most people dont chang there breeding the walker will be just memories of wat a good one was,i think the best dogs come from pleasure huntters, becals why they breed to tree coon not to tree trees, and john wick if you ever get the preacher dogs bread up call me i will buy one, david boggs 606-738-4935,,,,,i would love to tell you wat dog i was talking about but it would break a lot of hearts so it will remain a secerat but the man will let me tell he sayes for a verry larg fee.they are still permotting that line of no good dogs

preacher Ad in full cry

Hello MR Wick. I have The full year's of Full CRY 1976 and 1979. I looked at all the Wick ads. One magazine from 1979 has a Wick ad with a picture of Brinkley's Ozark Preacher, it said Preacher died in 1978. The ad listed some young dogs for sale out of preacher. The AD says that Preacher was one of the secret ingredients in your breeding program. The old magazines are a great way to research dogs.
