HUNT

My daughter had basketball games last night so I didn't get to hunt. My nephew is getting set up to hunt and is going to get Snow and Belle or Dolly to hunt. I am going to partner with him on Snow. I got her sister Flo back from my friend Trent as he has some issues with his neck and isn't going to get to hunt. I had kept Snow but my nephew liked her so I will hunt Flo. They are out of Bocephus . Flo is as green as a gourd so she needs a lot of work. Drake went with us Monday night and seemed to get sort of fired back up and I seen he had loaded his dog box back in his truck yesterday. I'm hoping he will start going more and help with all these young dogs. Its raining here today all day but hopefully it will slack up enough to hit the woods tonight. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!

HUNT

Drake , Ryan, and Myself hunted last night for a while. First drop we cut Dolly and Flip loose in a bottom. Flip struck and Dolly put in with him. It wasn't a great track but they worked it for a long ways. Both dogs were struggling at times to move the track but I was impressed with Flip as he got it going again several times. Dolly finally got treed deep in the bottom and we headed into her. Flip came in to the tree as we got there so I handled him. I didn't see the coon and I think Dolly just missed him. Next drop we cut Goose and my Flo pup out of Bocephus. Flo went with Goose for about 200 yds but I think he slipped off away from her. She came out to the truck and I walked her down a hollow and she acted really good. She has seen one caged coon a few months ago that Trent showed her and she was checking trees. Trent said she had been treeing on squirrels at his place. Goose had skipped the country on us so we loaded up and drove around to try to get closer. He was almost a mile from where we cut him and was still on the move. My garmin went off while we were driving and I got within 600yds of him. We got out to hear him blowing the top out. He was in a territory that I had never been in before. We started to him and it was mature open hardwood. I made a comment about how nice it was and we were lucky he was in this nice timber. After about 150yds there seemed to be an opening and it was nothing but dead trees and water. We waded water and mud for 400yds to get to Goose. Drake had went over his boots and Ryan had went over his boots. I was lucky that I had picked my way around and walked dead logs and had not gotten wet. Goose had a BIG coon up one of the live trees still in the swamp. We rolled it out to him and started the wet trip out to the truck. We rolled in and I got in bed at 12:45am. Goose can get you in some strange territory if coons aren't moving. His reverse must be stripped out cause he sure doesn't use it!! LOL I plan to hunt Goose tonight in a local UKC hunt. Hopefully he will operate like he normally does and we can get a win. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

Hunt

I hunted Goose in a UKC hunt Friday night. I drew a 4 dog cast with Walker male, Black and Tan gyp, and blue gyp. First drop 3 dogs struck in and ran short track and treed. Goose 350 yds in bottom and not struck. Den tree. Cut all 3 off den and went 75 yds treed. Slick tree. We decided to walk 3 dogs back out and cut in different area. Goose 600yds. We walked about 100yds Goose opens deep so cut all 3 dogs. Go short distance and tree. Slick tree. 2 dogs get minused. Goose treed. He is on big den. Move a recut dogs. 2 dogs strike. Goose opens deep right handed. 2 gyps treed. Den tree. Walk gyps in Goose direction and he trees. Leash locked dogs and we go to his tree. See coon. Hunt over 175+ and 1st place registered. Going to stay on him. Y’all keep’em lookin’ up!!

Seth

Thanks buddy. Congrats to on your win as well. I know that’s 2 for you. Blue dogs made a good showing last night. This thread has a lot of useful info. I can go back to my thread about this time last year and see what dogs were doing and where I was hunting. Sort of like a hunting log online. We will try to get hooked up and hunt one night soon.

HUNT

My cousin and I hunted for a little while last night. First drop I cut Vapor alone. He left hard and was soon 550yds in the bottom. He went the wrong way and had gotten in some pretty rough stuff. Mud and water with small trees. Of course that's where he struck. He moved a track out about 400yds and located but didn't stick it. He moved on and we walked in to get closer. He soon located again and hit a tree but he didn't sound to sure. I finally walked in to him and he was in a swamp and was locating on a tree out in the water. I leashed him up and there wasn't a coon in the tree. He was really struggling with all the water but I was pleased at how he left out hard alone and will cover some ground in a hurry. He is still just a pup and has a tremendous upside. He has me excited with how he hunts and also is a dead loner.

Cotton has just went out of heat and we decided we would have a "Ladies Night out" and hunt the females. We cut Cotton, Dolly, and Belle in a rough swamp. Cotton and Dolly struck almost simultaneously and Belle soon opened as well. It was a good track and they were burning it up headed up the bottom. They soon made a turn and headed for a large creek but it did not throw the gyps off his track. They crossed the creek and then crossed back and the coon headed out of the bottom to a pine thicket. They were about 7/10's by now and we started walking to keep up and hear better. We soon heard the dogs load up and hammer a tree. All 3 of those gyps were telling the news and ringing the bottom. They had circled out of the pines and gotten back into the swamp. We got to the tree and it was a mess. There were 2 or 3 big trees that had blown over into 5 or 6 big trees. The dogs were treeing up a leaning tree that had blown down and gotten tangled up in the other 2 blown over trees. We looked for a while but didn't see the coon. He could have been anywhere or he could have crossed out and moved on into the swamp. We got back to the truck and it started raining on us. It was coming down pretty good so we called it a night. I will hit it again tonight. Y'all keep'em Lookin' UP!!

HUNT

Ryan, Drake, and I hunted for a while last night. First drop we cut Flip and Vapor loose in a swamp bottom. Flip struck and Vapor soon opened to the right. Vapor was opening here and there and was skipping out deeper in the bottom. Flip was working a track to the left. Flip soon located and loaded up treed. We made our way to him at about 200yds. He was up a smaller tree that ran into a big oak. We looked and squalled but I think he just missed the coon. Vapor was about 375yds. We cut Flip and he wanted to go back to the same tree. Vapor let out 2 or 3 big locates and settled in on a tree at about 400yds. We headed in to him and soon found his coon. We rolled this one out to him. Flip came into the tree and we handled him and headed to the truck. Next drop we cut Goose, Vapor, and Flip into another swampy bottom. Flip went to the right and Vapor and Goose headed down the bottom. Flip ended up coming out on the road and we caught him and loaded him in the truck. Vapor opened at about 475yds and Goose soon opened in the area. Vapor went left up the bottom and Goose shot across the bottom and soon loaded up treed. Vapor was still working in a rough area that turns into a pine thicket. We got to Goose and he had the meat. My bridge under my rear sights had gotten knocked loose and it took us several shots to figure it out before we finally knocked the coon out to Goose. Vapor never faltered on his track even when we were shooting the gun. I did end up walking in and catching him up as he was getting in no mans land. I don't know if Vapor will finish to a coondog but I really like this pup. He is 13mths old and has a lot of the tools that I like in my hounds. Flip continues to improve as well and Ryan is going to get him and partner with me. Lots of plans for the future and hopefully some of them will work out. Y'all keep'em Lookin' Up!!

I didn't get to hunt last night but Ryan took Flip and went with a local guy for a while. He called and said Flip looked really good. He split twice with the meat and the other guy was hunting older dogs and they had one coon and one slick tree. Ryan was on cloud 9. I partnered with him on Flip and he has been putting him in the woods. I am going to concentrate on hunting Vapor. I'll be hitting the woods tonight!! Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

Drake, Ryan and I hunted for a while last night. First drop we cut Vapor alone in a swamp bottom. He left out hard and made a left hand turn and headed down the bottom. He soon was about 650yds and I heard him open a couple of times. He got quiet and skipped out about 200 yds more and just fell treed. We got to him and he was treed up a medium sized tree that ran into some larger bay trees. I couldn't find his coon and he may have just missed him. He has been accurate as I have been to 2 trees that I thought he did not have a coon. Next drop we cut Flip alone and he has steadily improved with his hunting. He left out and struck at about 350yds. He cut left out of the bottom and crossed a field. He ended up crossing the paved road and going up into the hills. I think he was running a small deer or a fox as he kept making large circles and coming back around to the same area. We pulled close and caught him trying to cross the road again. Next drop we cut Goose and Cotton in a good hardwood hollow. They didn't strike and soon were deep. We moved around and got within 600yds of them and they were trailing a coon in a bad area. The timber was cut in the bottom about 5yrs ago and beavers dammed up the creek. This area is rough. If there is dry ground it is covered in briars and hedges. If it isn't covered in briars and hedges, it is under water. There are a few trees scattered throughout the swamp but not many. Both dogs were really working hard to move the track and soon had it going to better timber. They crossed the creek back and forth several times. They loaded up deep and I could barely hear them but we drove to a gas well pad and got with 400yds of them and made our way to the tree. They were treed in a small beaver pond on a big den tree. It was 11:30 so we made our way to the truck and called it a night. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' UP!!

Hunt

I hunted by myself last night. First drop I cut Goose and my Flo pup out of Bocephus. Goose left hard and pup went with him for about 250yds but got hung up on some water. Goose opened a few times st about 650yds and made a left turn and was headed across the bottom. He drifted out and opened a couple times at 800yds. He moved on to .67 and I heard him locate and load up treed. I drove around and came in an old hunting club road and got within 450 yds of him and headed to the tree. He had the meat on the edge of a small creek that runs out of the hills into the bottom. I rubbed him on the head and we headed to the truck. Next drop I cut Cotton and Vapor. Cotton went left and struck a good track. She drove the track into the bottom and soon treed. Vapor went right handed and opened a couple times and treed. I went to him first and he was on a den tree out in a swamp. I sent him on into the bottom and went to Cotton. Cotton was up a huge beach tree that was a den as well. I loaded Cotton a caught Vapor on the way out. Next drop I cut Goose and Flo again. Flo went with Goise but again got hung up on the creek. Goose left the country on me and I heard him open at 8/10 ‘s. I drove around and Goose was coming up a drainage ditch thru a pasture. I caught him up before he could cross under the road because there are a lot of houses on the other side. It was 11:30 so I called it a night. It has been pretty tough here the last couple weeks to strike a decent track. Our weather has had such drastic swings in temperatures and coons seem to stir at different times. Y’all keep’em lookin up!!

HUNT

I hunted by myself last night. I went to a nice bottom that I hunted years ago. It has some nice timber and a good creek that runs thru it. If dogs go the wrong way, it can get into some bad stuff. I cut Goose and Flo loose in the bottom and Flo left out with Goose. She got about 175yds and I heard her open. She was hung up on the creek. I think she is as bad as any I have had about not wanting to cross water. Goose was steadily covering ground and Flo soon came back to me. I had walked quite a ways in the bottom just looking around for tracks and checking things out, so I made my way to the truck. I loaded Flo in the box and moved around to an old oil well pad to get closer to Goose. He had left the bottom and made his way across a cutover and had hit some hardwood hills. He was getting in an area that is only accessible on foot. As my luck would have it, I soon heard him open and start a track. He skipped and drifted out and soon loaded up treed. About the closest I could get to him was 750yds so I let Flo out of the box and headed to the tree. I was able to walk a pipeline for a ways but soon had to cross about 200yds of cutover. Briars , hedges, holly trees, and small pines. I got to the timber line and it was straight up and down for a little while. I soon topped a large hill and Goose was treed on a small flat area at the top up a huge Red Oak. I soon spotted his coon and decided to roll it out to Flo and Goose. I bought a pistol that I carry as I hunt alone and it gets tough leading dog, reading Garmin, and carrying a rifle. I shot the coon and I think I just pissed him off because he came out of the tree mad!! It was a large boar coon and he had whipping dogs on his mind. Goose lit into him and Flo started barking at it as well. She was getting braver and soon got a taste of the ole coons ivory!! That set her on fire and she got really aggressive. Goose soon dispatched him and I attached my dog leash to the coon and dragged him around for Flo. She was sure enough bad on him after he was dead!! I hung him up and she really lit up the tree. She has a big mouth and treed nice on the hangup coon. I gathered up the dogs and started the long walk back to the truck. I got to the truck at 10:40 and decided to call it a night. Not the most productive night of treeing coons but a good situation for Flo on the coon walking out ready for a fight.Hopefully she will progress and get used to the water. According to my Garmin, Goose covered 2.11 miles to tree the coon. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!!

Your gonna have to have a talk with him, tell him to tree them a little closer to the truck !!! LOL ...

Goose

I don’t mind having to walk a long ways as long as they got the grease on a limb. I have been having trouble getting after a decent track.

DOGS

I didn't get to hunt last night but I will be hitting the woods tonight. Looks like I'm back solo again as these young fellers just can't hang in night after night with the ole man!! They come in on fire but a few nights of long walks and they just smoldering a little. Anyway looks like we already have those legless creatures slithering around. Guess it's about time to start carrying my stick again to knock them in the head!! This is a pic from a couple of years ago at one of my main hunting areas. We walked about 450yds to a tree and got 2 on the way in to the tree and 2 on the way to the truck. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

That night two years ago would have been my last hunt with the temperature above freezing. You dont have to worry about me moving to snake country to hunt.

Snakes

You get used to seeing them here. In July and August there will be one laying around about every slough and water hole. I carry a stick and knock them in the head. Mostly copperheads and water moccasins here but I got a big timber rattler inside of one of my corn feeders a few years ago too. He was a bad boy with a head as wide as my fist.

HUNT

I hunted by myself last night. First drop I cut Vapor alone in a swamp bottom. He struck a track at about 250yds but it didn't seem to be a good track. Vapor took a few minutes in one area but soon he was drifting out and heading across the bottom. He did a really good job of hushing and skipping out. He has gotten hung up on few tracks and that was one of my concerns with him. He soon gave me a couple of big locates and treed at 675yds. I headed out to him. He had a couple of times that he hushed for 30-40 seconds and I figure he was checking the tree. I have seen him do this and I hope age and confidence will resolve it. I got to him and he had really starting rolling one short bawl after the other and man he is loud and sounded good. I got to him and he was up a medium sized oak that ran into a huge pine tree. I could not get the coon to look. Next drop I cut Flip alone about 500yds down the bottom. He went about 250yds and made a circle and came back towards the truck. I watched him on the garmin and he started working in one area for a little while. He soon located and fell treed. He was about 150yds and I headed to him. He was on a den tree. I leashed him up and headed to the truck. Next drop I moved to the hills and cut Cotton and Goose in nice hardwood hollow. Goose went left across the hollow and Cotton headed down the hollow on a small creek. I soon heard Goose open a couple times and load up treed at 675yds. I drove around and walked about 250yds to him. When I got to where I could see him he peeled off the tree and went 10yds and crawled up on a pine tree. He was trying to be slick as I soon spotted a big fat possum. He got a few whelps on his hide and I made my way to the truck. I drove back around and Cotton was deep. I started moving and got within 500yds of her and she was working a track in some bad stuff. She got the track out of the rough area and got into some good timber and I heard her load up. I got to her and she was up a huge beach den tree. I looked but he wasn't on the outside. I leashed Cotton and headed to the truck. I called it a night and will hit the woods again tonight if this rain and wind isn't too bad. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

VAPOR

Vapor just turned 14 months old. He has a motor that I haven't seen in one his age in awhile. He is a loner and leaves in a dead run alone or with company. I am liking this young dog.

Vapor

Thanks Keith
I appreciate you working with him as a pup and getting him started. I think he will end up being nice. He is really filling out and making a good looking hound.

WINTER CLASSIC

We had our basketball games cancelled tomorrow because the school we were supposed to play is closed due to the flu epidemic. I had planned to hunt Goose but canceled out when I saw that we had games on the 9th. I am planning to ride over to Batesville in the morning and visit with some fellow bluetickers. I hope to see some of you fellows there!! Y'all keep'em Lookin' Up!!
