Yea I'm sure she will. She would get so excited, and start swinging her arm, Rhett was scared she would hurt the puppy. Grand kids are so much fun!!

Took Ole Merle and Blueduck for a short hunt last night. It’s really hard on me since the time changed back. Guess I’m just getting old. But I can’t stand Daylight Savings Time, it sure aint for coonhunters. Anyways, back to my hunt. There aint much to tell I guess. I turned them out on a hot feeder, and the only thing I can figure, is they took the back end of the trail. It was red hot and after 200 yards, they couldn’t move it anymore. They eventually made it out to the road on the other side, and the foot race was on. With a some calling and a little EMF, they came back down the road to me. I loaded them up and headed back home. Got to have a better hunt next time. NEED MORE DOG POWER!!!

Dog Power

Tommy, I know you have plenty of dog power. some times I can take my best out and have a bad hunt, and then the next night carry a pup out and have a wonderful hunt. That just the way it goes some time. Take care.

Eddie you sure are making me hungry talking about those crawfish.

4/5/16

Last night the Bayou Coonhunts had our monthly meeting and club hunt. Last month, Rhett and Case where the only ones wanting to hunt. I wasn’t going to let him get a win without fighting for it, so I brought Blueduck. Well we squared off, Father(me) vs Son(Rhett) and the dogs Father (Case) vs Son(Blueduck). For this 1 hour hunt, Rhett was the judge, Donald was the score keeper, and I was the guide. We cut them loose off the steel bridge road at 8:30. Before the 1 minute was up, Blueduck struck. Donald put him in for 100. Rhett waited for the minute to be up before stricking Case, since old dad took the first strick, Case for 75. It was a cold track but they kept moving it deeper. After awhile they had it heated up pretty good. At one point the garmin showed Blueduck treed, but it was plan to see that he was still running getting farther away. But the Garmin still showed him in one place. After 45 minutes Blueduck located a time or two but moved on with Case. Rhett was starting to sweat. LOL About 50 yards farther, Case gave them 3 screaming bawls and rolled it on over to a steady chop. Rhett treed him before he got that last locate out. Donald put him in for 125. We had a long walk so we started to the tree. After about 3 minutes Blueduck decided that ole Case might have something and treed. Donald put Blueduck in for 75. They had treed up a big pin oak, and I didn’t think we would find him, but after a little looking I found him out on the end of a limb. Plus them up! We only had a few minutes left to hunt, so we walked it out. Case finished with 200+ and Blueduck had 175+. It really was a good hunt. I did have Rhett worried there for a minute, that’s for sure. But to the Garmin, Blueduck had dropped his collar where it had shown him treed. We rode around to get closer, and walked the 265 yards in to find it. I walked straight to it. All and all it was a fun night.

Took Blueduck behind the Mississippi River levee, Saturday night. The water is still high, so huntable ground is limited. Riding down the levee, I saw two coons feeding on the waters edge. One went to the right and the other went left when i headed for them. I sent Blueduck to the left where the closest one went. He never opened on the track, but treed about 40 yards into the woods. I could see wet coon tracks going up the tree, but never found the coon. Alittle farther up river I saw one in a huge Poplar, so I sent him that way. He struck a track and worded it in a big circle around the tree where the coon was. He eventually treed on a tree about 10 feet away from the big poplar. Wasn't too bad of a hunt.

Took Blueduck and Merle for a short hunt last night in Gumswamp. I sent them up an old logging road off the steel bridge road. They went in deep to the east, then turned back northwest. They had made it almost back to the steel bridge road, but were 300 yards north of where I cut them. Blueduck struck with Merle not far behind him. They headed back east on what sounded like a good track. When they hit Wall Bayou, Blueduck went north and Merle went south. Wasn’t long before Blueduck located and locked down treed. This young dog can really tree when he thinks he’s right. Off I went stepping to get there. About 150 yards from the tree, my foot got caught on something, and I took a nosedive into the ground. LOL My old rifle stuck up barrel first in the mud, my light flew off my head and ended up 5 yards ahead of me in the mud, dog leads around my neck, tangled up in the vines, would let me up. After I got up, and clean my light, I had to find my Shocking Collar Remote. All good, now to the tree, I found Blueduck treed in the middle of Wall Bayou on a leaning tree that went up into a Tupelo Gum snag. He would climb up on the tree, only o fall off into the water and swim back to do it all over again. While I was tying him back, Merle came into the tree. I search the tree but never found the coon, but it was really thick, and with my gun barrel full of mud, other than make me feel good, the dogs didn’t know the different.

Tommy, sounds like Blue Duck is doing you a good job. I understand the falling down part. I do that a lot these days. I was hunting with Steve one night and I was carrying his rifle. Now this was no ordinary rifle, Steve really had this thing diked out. It was a beauty. We were wading in one of those sloughs over at his house and I fell down and the first thing that hit was that rifle and it just buried up in the muck and mud. now when I handed that rifle back to Steve. He just looked at it, and although he didn't say anything, you could almost see a tear in his eye, and although I really hated it. It might have been a good thing on my part, because he aint never let me tote the rifle again. Good huntin Tommy.

FALLING

I know 2 guys Now that won't be toting my rifle! lol!! Mr. Jack Did see a tear in my eye Tommy, lol! He sure knows how to knock the New off something Quick! It happens but at least us Ole Coonhunters can still get up and stagger on to the tree. The day will come when we are to broke down to go anymore, until then I don't mind falling every now and then and getting a little mud on the rifle. Clean that rifle up good and get back after them, sounds like they making some good ones, Take Care.

Thanks Steve, that little girl has my heart, thats for sure.

Gumswamp is flooded again, so I took Blueduck and Merle back to the Mississippi River and hunted behind the levee. There are Bar Pits all along, between the levee and the river. The Corp of Engineers had dug deep ditches from each pit to the river to drain the pits. Every time you tree, it seem they are behind one of the pits. When they do, you have to figure out what side of the ditch they are on. Last night was no different. This past Friday I saw lots of coon sign when I was crawfishing in there, so that’s where I turned out. Blueduck struck 25 yards from the ranger. After a couple minutes, he lined it out and Merle fell in with him. They ran him behind one of Bar Pits and treed. We were only 45 yards from them, but we were on the wrong side of the pit. It was a constant roar from the tree. We rode to the north end of the pit and headed the 350 yards to them. They were treed up a big Bitter Pecan that was covered with vines. Try as I may, I couldn’t get him to look. I feel like he was there. It was a good night.

Took Merle and Blueduck back to the river Thursday night. As soon as I took off in the Ranger, I saw a coon on the wood’s edge. He was 50 yards from the truck. So I cut the dogs loose on him. They took off running wild like two idiots, barking all over the place, and could never get it lined out. So I called them back in and loaded up to try another spot. I went about ½ mile and saw another coon, this time I drove pass him and sent the dog back his way. Merle struck about 75 yards in, with Blueduck right behind him. They ran him 100 yards or so, then Merle lockdown treed. Blueduck covered Merle as I was making my way to the tree. They were treed up a Sycamore on the edge of a small opening next to the river. From out in the opening, it didn’t take long to get him to look. I let them have this one, then moved on down the river. A mile or so down river, I sent the up old road that ran between the river and a bar pit. They were gone very long before Blueduck struck. After 5-10 minutes, they treed up a big Pin Oak. I could see the tree good, but never did find him, I don’t think he was there. I caught them up and sent the on down that same old road. This time they covered some ground before stricking. But the trail didn’t last long, and they treed. I rode to within 25 yards of the tree. I could see the tree, dogs and coon, from the ranger, but couldn’t get to them. They were across a deep ditch off the end of one of the bar pits. To make a long story short, I couldn’t find a place to cross, I just went through it. After getting wet, I called it a night.

7/14/16 Hunt

Went back to the Mississippi River again Monday night, Claude Smith went along with me. We sent Blueduck and Merle down the same old road where I got wet a couple night before. They went about 50 yards and struck a hot track. They made a little loop and crossed the bar pit and treed. They were treed down in the edge of the water on a tangled up mess of Buck Brush and vines. Merle didn’t like and wasn’t treeing very much, but Blueduck sure thought he was there. The second drop, we headed them the same road, this time the foot race was on. They ran the road 600-700 yards I guess. I called them back in and sent the out again. They struck as soon as they hit the ground, made a little loop and treed up a tree with two big holes. I feel they had this one but was in one of the holes. We loaded them up and moved on down the road. It was 9:00, but I had to cut them loose again. They didn’t go 100 yards and struck and treed just that fast. This was a big Elm that was hollow as well, and I didn’t see this one either. Not a bad hunt even if I didn’t see a coon. I’ll bring them back to Gumswamp tonight, so they don’t get too use to these easy coons on the river.
