Hunting a little female off a stud that Oscar Stapp owns off of Tae Bo and she is coming along nice. All I can say is the little female is loud and sure does have some drive. Keep up the good work Mr. Wilcox

Jeff You post a interesting question..Most people that have a real Lay-up dog are just hunting a hot nose dog...I guess Gun will come treed maybe once a night on a lay-up but most of the time its late in the night when tracks are geting hard to come by..The best I have had was the old JR..he would hunt 15-30 min. then look for a tree..I like a dog to open real quick on a hot or cold track...You post a good question (what is a lay-up dog) Larry

Larry, I had a Walker dog... He would tree coon that dogs had no idea were around..... He was an open trailing dog and he would just fall treed in late Sept-through Oct. He would tree coon and dogs would just stand around and wonder what was going on..... Most people think that their hot nose open track dog is a layup dog.... It is just silent on a cold track and they don't know the difference..... I like a layup dog to be open trailing cold nose and in Oct.. you can tell if it is a layup dog.... Those big oaks are where they shine....

Jeff, I totally agree with you on this layup subject. Just as you had stated, you dont really know how good you layup dog is till you watch them operate in Sept & Oct.

In my opinion, here in Ohio, you cannot really assess your dogs layup ability until you have hunted them for the 10 months prior to Sep/Oct. If in that 10 months prior, your dog opens and trails a high percentage of their tracks before coming treed, you can then be confident in saying your dog is pretty good at layups (IF) in the months of Sep/Oct the dog begins falling treed without first tracking, on maybe 50% or greater of the coons they are treeing, and you are seeing the coons. After doing that, for a year or two, you can then be confident that your dog is actually treeing layups & is also pretty good at it.

Again (just my opinion)

Larry u can keep that snow in mich. We have bout 2inch but it cold . Scoobie went 934 yards last nite and put up a huge bore coon it was 11. Very cold walk but he done a great job.

Buddy, I used to squirrel hunt every year with a old friend who is no longer with us. His name was Pete Ridgeway and he lived up in Fennville,Mi near the state land...It was a ball and I loved it .Not many know my old JR dog was a hell of a squirrel dog in the day time..We would hunt early and tree coon and squirrel both..Thanks for bringing up thoses old memories.....Larry

Todd, I don't know if its 64 years a metal hip , bad knees or the lazy syndrome...its 7 degrees and this couch feels good...does not look like I can make it down this year. We went to the Grand American and had a great time and hope to make it to Southern English days this year..Its always great to see old friends you only get to see once a year or so.....Take Care Friend...
