Coon Hunting
Women have just as much right and just as much braines if not more than some guys do and as far as old school well there is where I came from.I wish more women would take part in coon hunting because some of themwould just blow you guys out of the water doing it.GO GET THEM LADYS
Let's not give em too much now! They already got a lot of control through the powers that be!

If you don't care any more for your father than this .... what do you care what he says .
Other than that , it's not hard to understand that he meant if you'd have been a boy you would have probably gotten a hound pup instead of a barbie doll for Christmas ... kind of a no brainer ...

I have absolutly no problem with a woman coon hunting BUT I believe that in too many situations a woman tries to put themselves in a man's shoes. God made women the "weaker" vessel due to proven characteristics of women being more emotional and what not. My wife goes coon hunting with me some but i would not consider her a coon hunter...she is busy playing the role that God made for a woman. Not saying a woman cant be a coon hunter just that there are too many women trying to play a mans role in the relationship and me being a christian do not agree with it.... just my .02 shun me if you want and i meant no offense towards women...they have a very important role that God made for them.
After everything I've read on here , your dad is fighting a losing battle.
You'll be awful lucky if you don't run him off. But , of course , it'll be all his fault.

Just all 'round , meat gettin' hounds.
I'm a female coonhunter, i got started in this sport by other women coonhunters...
I don't let things people say bring me down, if my dad made a comment like that i would brush it off and get over it. Its my life i can do what i want with it...
If you want a coonhound and to coonhunt. DO IT! Don't let the words of other people get in the way, cause your always gonna have someone put their 2 cents in..
If I had a dollar for every critisizing remark i've heard, I'd have a lot of money, but you know what... you either ignore it or do something about it.
Don't let your dad's comment keep you from getting into hunting, you might have taken it wrong way... jmo

I do feel that no matter male or female if you want to coon hunt you should do it. I did have a girlfriend that went with us quite often, back in the early 80's , even my old hunting buddy didn't see anything negative about her going.
I judged the the UKC World Hunt in 83, the first cast had a woman hunting in it. That part didn't bother me, the fact that she was 8 months pregnant did make us a little nervous. She hunted the 3 hrs without a single complaint ... cannot say the same about a couple of other cast members.
As far as worrying about something happening while out coonhunting, carry some backup and get a dog that watches out for you !

I wouldn't worry about it.just do your own thing.I am from a family of 5 girls and 3 boys.My Dad was not a hunter. Some of my brothers dabbled with some hunting but with no serious intents. Why I got so obsessed with hunting is anyones guess.
I always carry an equalizer with me when I go by myself. It is for snakes but the two legged ones.
Back when I first started and I joined a coon club one prominent member made a remark I will call thoughtless and ignorant which amounted to me not belonging there as a coon hunter.I should go back to the kitchen. It just made me more determined to succeed.
Well not puffing but I have on several occassions since then have either heard or been straight out told that when I enter a dog I am one of the ones to beat because I am usually packing a good one.It sure makes you feel successful in your endeavors to be given such a compliment.
Then you got the guys that are hunting walkers that can't stand to get beat by a blue dog let alone one being hunted by a woman.HORRORS!!
It sure makes it worth while to over come the adversities handed out to anyone for any reason in this sport and not let anyone say no you can't.Say yes I can!
Good thing us men never get critisized , made fun of , have hardships ...... it's nice to just be handed life on a silver platter , poor women don't know what they're missing out on ...

No you should not be offended by your father's comment. As far as what you should make of it! That part is up to you. If you want a coonhound GO FOR IT! If you want a top notch competition hound GO FOR IT. Start with a hound from excellent proven bloodlines and put the time and effort into the process. The rewards are great. Only you will decide if you are a coonhunter or not.
The year I judged on the Final Cast of the Hunting Beagle World Hunt in Virginia a woman(Suzette) won the Hunting Beagle World. She did a great job of handling and her dog turned in a winning performance.
Not sure how many women run coondogs but only a few run beagles. Has a woman won a major coonhound event? Will you be the first?
I see no discrimination as to gender. know that it will be up to you to select a pup with potential, put in the field time training, learn the rules, etc. Go For It! Dan M
If I had a daughter, I would not wanting her hanging around coonhunts!
if i get beat by a female handler...her and her dog were better than me and ill shake their hand and say good job..but they will earn the win..
i have NO problem with women in this sport, the only thing they need to realize is men will not (or atleast should not) hold back when hunting against you..hunting for fun or pleasure hunt is different, come on and hunt with me anytime..the only thing i have notice is i catch myself looking to make sure their ok or need help crossing a creek or fence, when hunting with guys, i just go and dont look back. i think that instinct in men to protect a women, just my 2 cents..
i even hunted with a girl while hunting with BRIAR..

Okay, I've been planning for months to get a coonhound and will as soon as my life circumstances allow. My father was a coon hunter years ago, and we talk hounds all the time. He has known that I've been planning to get a dog, and he has been in total support of this. He has said that he will go with me to pick the puppy out. I am interested in all the events and want to do any many as I can. I thought I had made that clear to my father.
The other day we were talking up a storm about coonhounds and hunting and stuff. Out of the clear blue he said, "You love hounds so much just like me. If you had been a boy, you might have been a coon hunter". I was speechless when he said that, utterly speechless. I thought that I was going to be a coon hunter anyway. I thought that's what the plan was all along. Did he really think that I was going to get a dog and only do bench shows and never train the dog to hunt? I wish I had said something, but I was so taken aback by the comment that I couldn't say anything. It totally took the wind out of my sails. I became silent, and I think he realized that he had said something wrong.
My father swears that he meant nothing by the statement, but why say it if he meant nothing? To me there was no other way of interpreting it but to say that I couldn't be a coon hunter because I am a girl. That has kind of put a damper on things for me. It's not like my father has ever tried to hold me back on things because he hasn't. He supported fully me becoming a lawyer and me doing military, etc., and both of those professions have historically been male dominated. What he said would have been the equavalent of him saying, "If you had been a boy, you might have been a lawyer". He never had any issues at all with my career choices.
And it's not like he's against women. He hopes and prays that Sarah Palin is the next president, which makes his comment all the more puzzling given the fact that Sarah Palin is an avid hunter herself. His comment shocked the heck out of me because just the night before we had been watching Sarah Palin and her father go hunting together, and my father had commented on how great their relationship was and how great it was that they shared the passion of hunting. And then he makes a comment like that????
My father did his coon hunting mostly in the 1970s and early 1980s, and back then there were few if any women hunting. And in his club there were no women hunters. Maybe it's not that he is necessarily against women coon hunting, maybe it's just that he's never seen it. So, in his mind a coon hunter is a man. If his club had, had women hunters it probably wouldn't be an issue because that would have seemed normal to him. I have also told him that I intend to get into fox hunting, the traditional english style on horseback. He has no problem with that at all, but in that type of fox hunting there are likely to be as many women as men.
I can't figure my father out. Perhaps he can't get old images out of his mind. He has been out of the coon hunting world for close to 30 years. It's like he goes from one extreme to the other. He can make a comment like if I had been a boy I might be a coon hunter, but in the same sentence he is telling me that we need to get me a nite light. And then he has made comment that he thinks Sarah Palin would be a good coon hunter if she ever got into it. You see any contradictions there?
As I said, his statement really put a damper on things. It was like a stake had been driven through my heart, or like the wind had come out of my sails. How would that have made you feel? I have never been easily offended by anything. I have always been able to laugh things off, but this was different. Was I wrong to be offended by this, and what should I make of it?

Put the monkey back on to Dad
Ask dad, do you think a girl could be a coonhunter? Then sit back & listen to the response. If the response is a favorable one, expand your question even more by asking what he thinks it would take for a girl your age to be a good coonhunter.
I am a father of a daughter & son myself. Both are grown & have their own lives now. My daughter enjoyed the hounds & hunting much more than my son. When she hit about 15 years old her interests changed & the hunting ceased. She always helped, & to this day still helps with my dogs if I am in need.
I don't know how old you are, but from a father's perspective, he may be thinking more towards the future & your activities & life changing as you mature. Show him with your actions the degree of your sincerity, & I think Dad take note. I wish you the best with a future of chasing these old hounds if you take the plunge!
Vic
