His first night in the woods. He has never seen a live coon before this night and he blew out the top when he found coon scent on his first tree. Big horn bawl mouth too.

You bet, Jay. Two years and the bundle it took to get this litter produced suddenly disappeared from my mind. They've been conditioned with treats around gun fire and when the 22 popped they didn't hesitate for a second and were all over the big biscuit when it thudded on the ground. I put the same effort into the rest of the litter so be ready for action when you take your pup out.

After a long winter waiting, Frito's spring training kicks off on April 1 this year. Competition hunts in the north commence in early May. The plan for next winter is to go far to the south and continue training and hunting, then back north for the summer...this will put us always in the sweet spot for hunting conditions. Which will result in much more progress for my dogs.

Frito’s spring training started Friday night. I shot him into the woods along the river and he ran upstream about 750 yards before opening. I thought he struggled a little on the track and when I got near his tree saw he had worked the track across a flooded creek with 1-3 feet of water on top of 2 feet of snow. I guess that would slow me down too. His first night in the woods after spending winter in a heated kennel and he goes for a dip in icy water first drop. Found him on a 200+ year old cottonwood I’ve looked up before, and fired him again into the woods. 200 yards distant he struck, tapped a den tree and then settled on another big den tree. No coon on the outside again! Sent him toward another flooded area and he crossed it, hit another track and fell treed. This time he had a coon in an ash.

Saturday night was the exact same pattern of good tracks, 2 dens and a coon on the outside. After a couple hours I didn’t think he was using his mouth right and he started making mistakes (he went back to a tree) and I figured he was being pushed too hard for being out of condition, so I loaded him and went home. Next morning, I knew how he felt. Walking with boots and chaps on snowshoes up and down the bluff over deep snow, sinking through rotted snow and ice into water flowing underneath and trying to pull your snowshoes back out through the whole they made in the ice is about too much for this old guy. But it was great to be back in the woods! I don’t care how bad it is we are going every night.

One drop in a little patch of woods last night: 2 tracks, both finished with coon eyes looking down. If there are coons in a small patch he'll stay in it and tree as many coons as he can find. No coons in the small patch and he's out the back side, running to find more woods.

Ditto last night too. I hunted the same big woods all night. A favorite place where the oak savanna foothills blend prairie into deep, swampy forest. The coons are frogging like crazy in shallow ponds and very busy. I have to admit Frito missed on one tree last night. Maybe we got that mistake out of the way for year? lol, lol. I cast Frito into the foothills and then sent him off each tree, time after time. He managed to show me three on the outside and by the time I looked up from the last tree we were in no man's land. I took some pics of the first tree of the night. Obviously this big coon didn't climb this small tree by choice. Yes, that is still ice on the lake behind him.

Tucker is enrolled in a summer school for coon dogs program with a pro handler/trainer and will start the hard work of learning later this month.

A couple of his brothers are already in good hands and treeing coons. And Super Charlie will spend the summer learning with me. A lot of good guys are helping make this plan move forward. Come the end of the year we will know a lot about this litter.

Super Charlie

Last night, I decided to take Charlie out for his first trip alone to the woods. Of course he didn't hunt deep but I did have to pull out the Garmin a few times to figure out where he was when he'd disappear for 10 minutes or so. Then there was the skunk, his first encounter with one. Good thing I was nearby and was able to turn it into a training lesson with no smelly after effects. Didn't bother him the least and off he went again. Sometime later he suddenly fell treed. So I walked over and he has a lay up coon on a limb in a big old cottonwood. His mama was an artist at this I'm told. He seemed pleased with a few pats on the side and we left this coon for another night. If he's like his dad at this age he won't need but 2 or 3 all summer. It was just beginner's luck anyway, right?
