I had a pup that developed what I would call a hot spot and it was bigger than what I normally have seen and called "hot spots". It seemed like it just wouldn't heal. So, I had a Vet look at it. First he scraped it, looking for some kind of mite. That wasn't it. Then, he used a blue? light because some types of fungus would show up as different colors. This did. So, he sold me a bottle of medicated shampoo and said to lather the pup up and let it sit for 15 minutes, if possible. I did that and the scab immediately dried up and appears to be healing.

I also got to wondering how a pup might get a fungus like that. I think I need to do a better job of changing and keeping fresh bedding for the dogs.

So, I believe that alot of these "hot spots" I have seen in years past were actually a fungus. It sure appears that a bath in medicated shampoo will clear it right up.

John,
What you described was ringworm which is actually a fungus called dermatophyte. The ringworm name was adopted from an early name because it was thought to be a worm that caused the rise in the skin. You can treat these by cleaning the lesions twice a day with a dilute bleach/water solution 1 part bleach to 40 parts water and with a dilute iodine solution as well or Tresaderm on the lesion twice a day for about 14 days. These are different from typical hotspots however which is moist allergic dermatitis. Ringworm is common in puppies that are housed in environments that support its growth such as dark moist barns/environments etc. Bleaching the area and getting sun exposure on the area to keep it dry will help. Nutrition plays a big part in building the animals immune system as well as ringworm typically requires a lowered immune system to thrive in the skin.

Man does it work good!!

Got a bottle of this stuff last time I was down in states and gave it a try> Fleas gone in one day!!!! and still gone after 2 weeks.
Thanks,

This product may work, but I have something cheaper and simpler, that I had never heard of until just recently. Nothing eve seemed to wok onmy dogs because they were constantly in the woods and aound strange dogs in the hunts but recently a friend turned us on to a simple solution, table Salt!!! Thats right table Salt and it works. If your kennels are on dirt sprinkle table salt all around on the dirt and in the dogs house, If you are on concrete sprinkle table salt all in the dogs house under neath bedding. I think I used about a box of salt in each dogs house and I went from dogs scratching and groaning one day to no fleas the next. Salt is usually less than 50cents abox try it I promise it works!!! Thanks Jeremiah Glaze

just curious...I read the MSDS posted before and it recommends immediate washing of skin if coming in contact with solution. Why is this not the case with the dogs skin? are any of you having any problems with skin irritations or bumps after use?

Your suppose to wash Frontline Plus off your skin if you come into contact with it too. But not the dog?

Insecticides react differently between humans and animals.

They also react differently between animal species; IE dogs and cats.

be very careful how you use salt around your kennels. if you are using any type of metal for fences or metal kennels. you will start getting rust.

how often do you apply this... I put it on my poor dogs... fleas were so thick on them the fleas were drowning in the liquid. 36 hours later..... I PROMISE TO NEVER COON HUNT AGAIN if I am lying... I saw three LITTLE fleas on both dogs. I just want to know how often ya'll are applying it.

REDWOOD... I have two grade dogs that weigh about 45 and 70 lbs... I used 9cc's split between spine line and belly/chest.

Been using Bayer Advanced: Tree and Shrub for the last three years.
It works great. I put about 10 to 12 cc's on their back. Rub it in real good. Just wash my hands good after I finish.

I repeat ever three or four weeks.

We have no flea problems at all.

Had a friend that had real bad fleas all over his yard. Put this in a garden hose sprayer and covered his yard. In a few days he had no fleas. He had to repeat in two weeks.

FLEAS

THIS STUFF IS THE $***, I TREATED MY HOUNDS ONLY ONE TIME WITH IT LAST YEAR , YOU COULDNT FIND A FLEA ON MY DOGS,BEST STUFF IVE EVER USED,AND WORTH EVERY DOLLAR YOU SPEND FOR IT.

I have this same issue and seems to be getting worse. I thought about usign the bayer, but was concerned about using it while I was using the fly predators. not supposed to put anything out that may kill them, but i guess fleas are a worse problem than flies right now.

Posted by Penny Jessup on 05-27-2008 03:03 AM:

Cynthia,

I use this on fleas. I had a bad problem 2 years ago...seems like fleas were terrible in my kennel and we treated and and it would help, but they would be right back...couldn't seem to get rid of them...then dogs would get tapeworms and we would treat for that...never ending cycle.

I finally broke down and tried the Bayer...I admit I was nervous, but after the first day...fleas were gone. It made me a believer. Wayne had printed off this original post and we still have it. So far, everything I read about held true when I tried it. I will admit that I didn't spray it around, I only rubbed it on dogs neck and down the back and maybe a bit on their underside, but mostly just on their necks.

Our dogs had NO adverse effects, no irritations, bumps, or anything. That's not to say that there might be some dog(s) that do, but I consider us fortunate that we didn't have any issues.

Since it knocked the problem 2 years ago, I believe I used it 2 x all last summer and again had no flea problem. The stuff is for real.

Penny

Penny, thats the same way I was. I was scared to use it last year. I used it and boom fleas were gone. I even put a small amount on my cat. None of my animals had any reactions to it. I think I only had to use it every 2 months on the outside dogs and I went ahead and used it every month for the inside dogs (wiener dog and aussie). I never sprayed it around though. I also do not think flea's were that bad last year though. -Ryann

Posted by Cynthia on 05-29-2008 01:22 AM:

I got some of this today and reread the dosing instructions that were given. They seemed to be a little high so I did some calcs of my own.

here is the original info:

The vets sale advantage, and it is 9.1% imidacloprid....and they have us put one ml on a dog 11-20lbs....... 2.5ml on dogs 21-55 lbs, and over 55lbs....4ml.... ok, now this stuff is 1.47% imidacloprid....which rounds up to 1.5%
So, now check my math......9/1.5=6 6x1=6, 6x2.5=15.0 and 6x4= 24...........this is the amounts i put on my dogs..........>>>>>>>6ml on dogs 11-20lbs,,,,,,15.0 ml on dogs 40to 60lbs....which could be 21 to 55lbs but i cut it back to 10 ml on dogs of 25lbs...beagles and it has been working....and dogs over 70lbs i use 24ml. >>>>>>>>15ml has been working on 70 lb dogs with me. If anyone can see where i have figured this wrong please let me know....

Here are my calcs:

9% = 1ml (concentration of Advantage)
1.5% Xml (concentration of unknown amount)

9x = 1.5ml (cross multiply, % cancels out)

9x = 1.5ml (divide by 9 to get X by itself)
9........9

X = 0.1667 ml

Therefore 1.5% per 0.1667 ml. As compared to Advantage 9% per 1ml. If the percentage of product is concentrated, then you will use less of a product rather than more.

Using the dosing amounts giving for advantage, adjust as follows:
.............Advantage.........Bayer Tree & Shrub
11-20#......1ml................0.1667ml
21-55#.....2.5ml..............0.4167ml
> 55#........4ml................0.6667ml

am I way off base? Anyway, I was still nervous, so I soaked a rag and rub the bellies really well. we'll see...
