At three years old my gyp started to loose her voice to cutting completely out, couldn't handle a track and not load up on a tree. I had laid her up for a couple months before this when my son was born and nothing like this was going on when I did. After a couple weeks of hunting a took her to the vet. First thing they wanted to do was fix her, but that was out of the question until we found out what was going on. The blood work came back normal but was positive for lymes. Gave the antibiotics and she came around, but not to the level she was before. My hunting time is also not what it once was either. My question is what should I do if anything to keep her healthy with lymes. I'm just assuming that is what caused her problems.

I'd keep track of her tempurature with a good digital thermometer a couple of times a week and if she goes over 102.5 F have her re examined. She may have been sick from pneumonia or bronchopneumonia. Wouldn't hurt to have her chest x-rayd if she doesn't come around 100%. Have her thyroid function tested too because many times dogs suffer from low thyroid after infections like this. Make sure they send it out for a Free T4 by ED which is the most accurate assessment of Thyroid Hormone. Good nutrition will help her immune system as well. Eukanuba Performance 30/20 is a high quality food that will help her immune system. I wouldn't supplement anything except maybe some meat and eggs if she needs it for weight and muscle.

In your opinion, what is the safest and best heartworm prevention medication?

Do you recommend the 6 month heartworm shot?

I've used the ProHeart 6 (Moxidectin) in the past with no side effects or issues. I started using it again here in CA after it came back on the market. I'd recommend not using it in any dogs with known allergies to vaccines or other allergies. I do think it is very effective and it's priced well.

I like Interceptor Plus myself. It's a broad spectrum dewormer for whips, rounds, hooks, tapes, and heartworm microfilaria. No side effects and it works great as a broad spectrum dewormer.

If you have a large kennel and cost is an issue, then Ivermectin 1% liquid given orally at .1cc per 10# is a great way to prevent hooks, rounds, and heartworm microfilaria.

If you are in any areas with known resistance to Ivermectin, then I'd dose it twice a month or use a combination of Ivermectin along with Interceptor Plus. You can alternate the products every 15 -30 days. The Mississippi Delta region is the area of most concern with resistance at this time.

I have been using the heartguard tablets 6 month supply from the vet. At around $50 a dog per month I thought there had to be a better way.

What age do you recommend giving heartworm prevention and would you test beforehand on a pup?

Also is the tube of horse wormer ok? One click a month. I know a lot of ppl using it also.

It's harder to dose the horse wormer but I'm sure it works fine for larger dogs. You have to be careful it doesn't cause irritation to the throat of dogs so be sure to put it in bread and give it with plenty of food to make sure it goes down the esophagus to the stomach. It's much easier to pull up the liquid for exact dosing in my opinion and put it in some bread or gatorade.

Start heartworm prevention at 8 weeks of age. There is no need for heartworm testing at this age. The Heartgard pills are fine for pups. I prefer the Heartgard Plus for added roundworm and hookworm control.

Ok Doc...What do you recommend to get a dog to loose weight? I have a Min Pin that's about at least 5 lbs. overweight and can't seem to get it off her. We've been feeding her small portions of Purina dog chow mixed with cut green beans. We were walking her everyday, and she was doing pretty good, but that has stopped so I was wondering if there was a better diet you might recommend ?

Hills Metabolic. Don't feed anything else. If she doesn't lose weight after 1 month then have her thyroid function checked.

No Doritos, Cheetos, and Tostitos. lol

here's my questions.. It is winter up here in wonderful Wisconsin..What is the easiest way to tell that my hound is getting too thin and I need to do something to increase weight gain.. Next question , at what temperature is it just too cold out and I should keep the dogs in... My dogs sleep in the garage but I put them out in pens when I go to work on 2nd shift. I switched to eukanuba 7 months ago , was feeding science diet for the previous 20 years , I really like the Eukanuba. I have a Outlaw Mac by Feldmans Roxie pup , she looks thin and all legs , feeding her about 5 cups of eukanuba puppy food aday. My vet says she is in excellent condition , 7 months old. Thanks so much for the dog care info you provide for us all , prevention is so much easier to deal with..

I was thinking of that the other day. Those poor upper midwest dogs. If you are concerned about it being too cold then don't hesitate to bring them in. I had a heated hog shed where the dogs spent a few months in during those rough months. Monitor the bedding close too because some of those dog houses wick moisture up when the snow melts and draws it inside making it damp and dangerous to the dogs. Put your hand all the way through the bedding to the floor watching for moisture. Eukanuba is still good dog food. I'd keep that skinny one on Eukanuba Performance 30/20 through the winter.

Just got back from a conference discussing tick diseases tonight. Best to treat for at least 30 days with Doxycycline.

Best to prevent it and Simparica has by far the fastest kill rate against ticks.

I have a female the same way. Best dog I own but will never breed her. I think it would kill her. Heck she won't eat much of anything. If I put 10 fried fish filets in there she would eat one or two filets and the rest would just sit there for days. Drives me nuts. But it wasn't all of the sudden, she has been like this since she was a pup.

I got one in the house that went off his feed too...was throwing up about every day too...wife took him to the vet and they drew blood (not sure what all they checked...lymes and heartworm is all i'm sure) and not sure what else to do other than trying some canned food ??

Cyst between toes

Doc hello , I found a couple cyst between my 5 yr old dogs toes . They look like little marbles stacked on top of each other approx .65 cm in size. So far it doesn't appear to be painful . How should I treat ? Thanks Wayne

Doc what do you reckon is going on with all these dogs getting hoarse. Seems to be getting more common now days.

I had a female that I was having problems with. Had her tonsils taken out. Problem solved. I now have a young male that's hoarse all the time. Gonna make an appointment Monday to get his taken out. Hope that solves his problem.

Hey Sam, I answered your question in PM. You just have to try different diets until you find one your dog likes. If his dog doesn't like dry food but will eat wet food, that could mean he has pain in his mouth. I'd try Eukanuba Performance 30/20, Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20, Victor Professional for starters. I've had really good luck with all of these.

Switch her out to Chicken Strips. It's way cheaper. lol
