-- Where would you want the world hunt? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=4537)

Posted by John D on 09-02-2004 06:39 PM:

Have it and they will come. Whether the eventual winner is respected or not, is beside the point of the hunt. If "Bob" is an honest man, a pleasure to hunt with and has got a nice dog and the dog does a good job and the dog earned it, word will get out on Bob AND his dog. There are always a few more like Bob that came up just a little short at the world hunt but their dog power still took them a ways. I look for the "Bob's" when I'm looking for winners.

Unfortunately, there are always a few "Joe's" in a world hunt. Joe's dog might have a major fault or two. Joe works hard and works smart to train his dog to get the most out of him. Joe will also do anything, and I mean anything to win if he thinks he can get by with it. He thinks of himself as being a better competitor, and "more prepared" with his borderline tactics. Joe will falsify papers if he has to. After all, they are "just papers". He will bend the rules because "anybody that doesn't know the rules deserves to lose". He will hire a lawyer to try to win the hunt after the hunt is long over if thats what it takes. He will turn loose coons right before he dumps in a woods, or hunt in an enclosure to increase his chances of a good score. He's made some false eyes to turn some circles to plusses. He is ALWAYS the jerk on the cast and is there to beat someone, not enjoy their company for a hunt or see his dog outdog theirs. Joe thinks he will earn the respect of everybody for winning. If he ever gets caught in some wrongdoing, then of course its some kind of a conspiracy against him. But, when he wins, he finds that most show no more respect for him than they did before. He just can't figure out why that respect he yearns for, seems to go to men and dogs he's beat.

So, have the world hunt wherever you want. But, for the months and years afterwards, remember who the finalists and winners are and keep in mind that some are Bobs and some are Joes. What kind of men they are means a whole lot more and remains in the minds of most longer than whether their hound treed 1 coon or 10 coon in some cast.

tenn. or ken. that way it would be in the center of the majority of the hunters. everyone could be there in 3 to 6 hours.

WHAT ABOUT WISCONSIN IN DECEMBER, NO LEAVES AND BIG HARD COON START TO RUT AROUND SOME....JUST AN IDEA

Posted by John Vaught on 03-07-2005 10:42 PM:

A STATE WITH LESS COON POPULATION

But then the hunt might last a month.......A state where no leaves are on trees........but then they alll might minus out........A state where a dog would have a little challenge running a track...........but then a lot of minus strick points some would minus out on strike points.........A state where coon eat on nature food and feeder buckets would automaticly get a cast scracthed for representing a fake score as well as a fake coonhound.........Kentucky, West Va. East Tenn. and other states that have terrian where a dog would not be on flat land at all times............Let the best dog win not the best handler.....A low score no doubt would prevail but a good feeling would come over the winner to know she /he won with a coon dog...........

Well John, I have really gotten irritated at you in the past over some of your posts but what you just said in my opinion was the GOSPEL TRUTH.

Posted by Whistle Pig on 03-08-2005 02:43 AM:

Gospel truth

Well Sheepster, I'm with you on that, I think that is the gospel truth also, and John has the right Idea on what seperates the coon dog's from the slick treeing dog's that can't run a track far enough or fast enough, or the one's that when the going get's tough just hang's a slick tree.

I don't have a real coon dogs but they are usually on the tree when a coon is treed.

now when these dog's are running the bob cat's all nite, and treeing on forty tree's, and my dog's don't run it that fine with me If my dog's don't run it, it's not a coon.

My dog's don't tree all the coon but If given a chance they will tree their part. some times i don't strike a coon in three or four hunt's

It's not in the Poll , But, Michigan is always overlooked. If you've never hunted here you are missing out. I have nothing against hunting in any of the southern states, I have competition hunted in South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana( I know I know, its south to us! lol) I just think that Michigan gets overlooked. The woodlands are plentiful, alot of swampy areas, and plenty of soy and corn.

I would'nt want to affend anybody by saying thier coon hunting sucks, BUT I went to Ten. this last year for American Redbone Days and the hunting was horrible. I did'nt hunt Thurs.
night, but Fri night we only scored 1 coon and that was only because we dumped on a feeder bucket. Of course my dog was'nt first to the bucket, but the guides dog knew right where it was. Other than that we did'nt find any other coon tracks, but my NiteCh cast did have two dogs that managed to catch a possum before that. Sat. night was'nt any better. Its a pretty well known fact that the only way to tree coon in a lot of spots down south is off of feeder buckets. Ya, I live in Ny, so it goes without saying I would like all the big hunts to be up north. Besides whats a dogs title really worth if it was earned by winning off of feeder buckets. (absolutly nothing to me). Big hunts should be held where there is coon everywhere so everybody has an equal chance to win by what dog does the best, not by who gets to hunt buckets all night.

not as many coon as up north

but a lot of fun from my view. i`m from north west georgia and i hunt alabama alot ,as its real close and you don`t need feeder buckets if you got a hound worth feeding.

How could we have a world hunt in Minn. They have the coon and everything but do you have the guides and judges? Last I heard no. Name on club in Minn. that can hold a big hunt? I'm talking 150 dogs and no hunting judges and guides. I feel Iowa would be a good place to have the world hunt or zone are not picky. Just remember what club can pull the most dogs to the woods a night. (Boone Valley Coon Hunters) Hands down when it comes to putting dogs in the woods Boone is on top in Iowa.

I wished some of you guys had Sheep's knowledge he could teach us all a few things but I know how you book taught coon hunters are you are trained by the rule book of a nite hunt which is a shame. You all are missing the true meaning of coon hunting and have lost all meaning of a real coon dog.

The problem I have when hunting areas with poor coon population is not rather a hound is a coon dog or not but finding the coon dog after they go find the coon and get treed. The world champion may get scratched for going three miles and treeing that one and only coon. For the folks that have to hunt that hilly country with very few coon I feel sorry for you. However, don't think for a second your hounds are all that good just because you need a tracking collar to find them when they get treed. I can tell more about a hound when they strike within hearing distance and get treed. Anything can take place when the pack is a mile away, and I mean anything. The blood will be dried before you get to the tree.

Hold the world hunt where most cast should score on three or four coon. A coon dog should be based on treeing coon and not on going 2 miles to get struck. I don't have anything against a hound working a track for a mile and treeing where the coon is. I think the luck of the draw will come into play much more in thin coon.

Are you talking about Redbone Days in Trenton, TN last year? I live 7 or 8 miles from there.
