Cold nosed

The logic is a smart hound will take the fresh trail and go with it, in his mind that should be a no brainer, iv hunted with all kinds , i hunted with silent hounds babbling hounds drifting hounds, you name it iv seen them all, and the smart ones tree coons and they do it the easiest way they can, i owned a female that would tree coons other hounds never opened on and she was not a cold nosed hound, she just looked for coons when she was in the woods on the ground or ina tree she knew how to findum, she wasent perfect but she sure could make a lot of hounds look dumb

David,

In all honesty, it scares me to death to turn my hounds loose in Indiana. I much prefer large sections without any roads. I have hunted down there numerous times throughout the years, and I have only felt comfortable one time. The worst time the cast was asked to cut their dogs in 1/4 mi from a 4 lane highway off of a 2 lane black top towards an expressway! I withdrew. Yes, the cast treed coons there, but I can't do it.

So when I talk about dogs running tracks, I am talking about my experiences hunting here in Michigan with considerable snow before, after, and since the 1970's fur boom. After the fur boom, there weren't high coon populations here, and those that were left would run.

Actually, I don't disagree with anything you or Daniel have stated. Everything stated does happen, but they singly or collectively don't discount drifting style track dogs either.

Now you are talkin, Gray matter is the key, they have to be smart enough to use the nose they have, and a big heart as well.
Get under a racoon as quick as they can, no matter where it goes.

Yep thats what matters.I think it takes a really balanced hound to be able to do all that.

Posted by Steve Flint on 11-12-2013 07:10 PM:

Come down to Southeastern Ohio in the hills and West Virginia where there are only a few coon per square mile and we will see what kinda track dogs you have.
The coldest nosed dogs that can move a cold track (big difference lots of dogs that can smell old tracks and do not much with them), I have hunted have been heavily Finley River, Flag bred, Night Heat (which is half Spring Creek Rock) down here your dog had better either be a great locator or have a good nose and be able to take an old tack work it and end up a long ways off with a coon! BRAINS!

I wonder if my dogs dam is a littermate sister to the male dogs you listed ?
My Mafia dog is out of GRNITECH Peppermint Dixie a daughter to Trackman & Patty on bottom & Electric Shock on top (Harry & Mable - Shock is a full brother to Judge Dredd) This dog is extremely accurate & can flat out drive a track hot medium or cold & extremely independent Not to toot my own horn but one like him don't come around every day .Since Patty & Shock are both out of Harry thought maybe these traits came from there . I have noticed in the $kc many are starting to breed for independence ,speed & accuracy , crazy tree dogs are not much in demand . And a dog w/ looks isn't important over one that will get to it's self or flat out drive a coon others can't even run will sell high reguardless of if it is covered in purple polka-dots !

I've always heard trackman and clover are pretty nice cold to medium nosed dogs. Trackman actually being colder, but CAN still push a track.

Posted by Steve Flint on 11-14-2013 06:40 PM:

I would say it's safe to say not many people have owned a true COLD nosed dog for several years!

I think it's safe to say your wrong . I've got one in my back yard that can flat out run a track that many dogs don't know exists . And will have the bacon 90% of the time . Doesn't boo-hoo blue dog around to do it either . Like him don't come around very often but their out there , but not around every corner. I've had one other like this in my lifetime he was out of Spring Creek Rock & died of old age . Couldn't replace him no matter how much money I spent ! It took years & I got lucky w/ Mafia - he was a natural from the get go ...treed a coon on a walk down my lane by himself (not turned out) @ 12 wks old we've never looked back . He trees coon as they come good bad or ugly tracks .When the dust of the summer & the frost of the winter many dogs areleft standing on their heads & owners wondering how that just happened. I consider myself blessed to have owned 2 once in a lifetime hounds ! Dredd the day looking for # 3 don't know if a person can get that lucky .

We all sell one we may regret ,but I was well compensated . I sold a pup to these guys in TX the X-Con dog a couple of years ago they did some winning w/ him @ SS last year &then he sold for $$,$$$ . Warrior was better than him @ this age . Jeff will put him in the right hunts & hunt his wheels off in between. I wish them all the luck there is with him ! I'll probably regret it even more when he's kicking my *** in the hunts in a year or 2 . I wouldn't have let him go but I've got a younger female from the Maf/Ann cross 8/18/13 she is a fire ball for her age & a male pup from Maf/Maxine (Greg Minklers good all grand female)big & bold & good looking to boot. After selling Warrior I bought back a 3 legged female off the Mafia/Kate cross (George Majors old female a winner & coondog) to give me something other than just Mafia to hunt right now . Plus my son has been going to some hunts & he like hunting females. My hunting buddy says if she had 4 legs we'd never keep up lol ...not what I would call finished yet but Mable -aka Unstable Mable is a very nice young female . She made Nite Ch for the kid that owned her in 5 hunts he's a college student & short on time . He said guys @ the hunts would make fun of him when he pulled her out but by the time the night was over they weren't laughing any more ! Time will tell with her & the little ones ,but I know i will always miss the old man when he's gone some day some shoes are never filled ...

In theory your argument makes sense, but your forgetting how quickly a dogs DNA can change. That's what makes breeding dogs so fascinating. It only takes a few generations to see major changes.

OMG { LIPPER }

ive not been on here lately, see I have not missed much. I owen { Lipper , Sackett, Skuna river } bred hounds . and when it comes down to it they stand second to none on coon, bear , and in the water . Good honest tree hounds , Track driving machines. I guess my favorit part is when they pick and tree a old track , have the meat and other hounds I hunt with stand on tree sniff sniff and walk away. I turn my bear hounds in to spots guys say lets go some where else . And they come up with bear . HUH !
